People are laughing at the UK's Online Safety Bill which plans to make social media companies accountable for the content they allow on their platform. For other reasons though (like laws breaking decrpytion), Signal and WhatsApp have threatened to outright leave the UK market if it gets passed.

The EU may push a better thought-out law, but then again I think by then, a lot of nations will turn right wing and pull out.

I did make a centralized twitter alternative. I have like 10 users, so its very popular.

I'm honestly getting a bit tired about stories about Twitter et. al. becoming more and more terrible. What will it take before leftists realize that it's not a battle they can win? These places have always been terrible and what little moderation they did before was more performative than actually useful. Using their platforms just makes them more powerful. Leave them and take your friends with you elsewhere.

Practically speaking, the only solution is for some other big site to draw people in a way Twitter can't. But even this way we're talking about a decade of decline.

I don't disagree, but there is something to be said about not completely ceding a space that still gets a lot of eyeballs and has a fair amount of social influence (though that continues to wain)....

It's not like any of the alternatives are particularly compelling either. Maybe Bluesky is, but I'm still waiting on an invite.

I actually started to write about that while I was drafting my comment but took it out because the wording kept coming out weird. I get that sentiment, but I think it's a battle that can't be won....

I get that sentiment, but I think it's a battle that can't be won. Especially when it comes to ex-twitter, but I think it applies to the others as well. They say that in organizations, the culture is dictated from the top. So if the people at the top - the owners in this case - are not interested in fighting misinformation, hate, or inequity. Musk in particular seems to be reveling in it. @EndGameOmega, that is what I was refering to when I mentioned that the moderation attempts were performative; they were only interested in them to avoid upsetting the users. In the case of Facebook it's the exact same reason why they are giving right-wing content more leniency right now; because they are crying out and pretending that they're being unfairly targeted.

As far as I see it, these social media services are like terminally sick animals. You can try to help it as much as you want, but by not putting them down you are complacent in it's misery and risking the health of others.

We already have seen disinformation push in preceding 2019 elections. The current main opposition party Congress was accused of hiring Cambridge Analytica for data mining on social media and influencing public opinion. However the party only accepted meeting the company officials but denied ever taking their services.
