Ah good. I’ve been waiting for this. Now Disney can get pissed and decide what they want the law to be…. Sad it works that way but this will be the first issue that makes the bean counters hesitate

Less than a week after Meta unveiled AI-generated stickers in its Facebook Messenger app, users are already abusing it to create potentially offensive images of copyright-protected characters and sharing the results on social media, reports VentureBeat. In particular, an artist named Pier-Olivier Desbiens posted a series of virtual stickers that went viral on X on Tuesday, starting a thread of similarly problematic AI image generations shared by others.

"Found out that facebook messenger has ai generated stickers now and I don't think anyone involved has thought anything through," Desbiens wrote in his post. "We really do live in the stupidest future imaginable," he added in a reply.

The pearl-clutching over this is funny to me. Anyone who has access to this can also "trick" google (or bing) into showing them a lot more potentially offensive content that they can send to anyone through messenger as an image or video as well. The hyperbole is out of control though. "The stupidest future imaginable?" Give me a break. I don't think any children are being harmed by an image of Sonic holding a gun. Not that it's bad to have reporting on this topic. I'm sure facebook will tighten up the restrictions on prompts over time in response.

Does a single major corporation need the heat that might come from a little kid punching in random stuff and getting Facebook to show them Bart Simpson channeling his inner Ricardo Milos? Probably not.

Didn't realize they'd hired Dr. Muto to Facebook R&D. "What could possibly go wrong?"

I noticed this feature in whatsapp messenger. I took a few stabs at trying to get it generate well known characters, and it didn't. I just assumed there was an "intellectual property blocker" or rather, it just generates from a fixed art style. It also failed to generate items with keywords it didn't like. Overall, it was OK but felt very much nerfed.

EDIT: I was able to get elmo with a knife as headline suggests. Again, I haven't spent much time with it, but wanted to report back to say some IP does indeed show up

That makes me think of the constellation feature in Animal Crossing: Wild World. You could draw constellations that would be automatically transferred between other player's towns. Can't imagine...

I hope they make some serious adjustments. I find it entertaining, but I can get stuff out of this that simply should not be possible.

But yeah, it feels strange in Messenger or WhatsApp since these apps are more...general use? I know Discord isn't only made up of gamers, but it definitely caters to a different audience. While I still have Facebook and Messenger, my usage (what remains of it) is way more "sterile" and vanilla, compared to some of my other social media. Particularly those where I can "hide" behind a screenname. Obviously Messenger is private, but I think only my brother and I would be sharing stupid AI stickers like this. I can't imagine playing around with these with many others on Messenger. But then my brother and I are both on Discord *shrug*.
