This looks about to be expected, from what I hear from friends, I don’t use Facebook (I refuse their re-branding, sorry, lol) offerings anymore myself. Lower than expected, actually:

    • Facebook (the platform) is dying, or depending on the region and demographic, already dead
    • WhatsApp, as far as I know, doesn’t directly generate money
    • VR is a joke
    • Instagram has content (and ads) for more and more people, young and old, niche or mainstream

Do they have any other major operations I’m forgetting?

WhatsApp does directly generate revenue. It has WhatsApp Business API for companies to broadcast messages to customers and have two-way conversation. It has a per message charge, which varies by region. Over the last two years, it's grown since Meta opened up their API in May 2022 and more tools popped up for businesses to use to send messages through. It's a small fraction of their revenue currently, but they are focused on increasing it.

Very good point, thank you for correcting me. I left WhatsApp before they introduced this, sometime in 2021 I think, that’s probably why I didn’t have it on my radar earlier…

Their Metaverse is a joke but VR overall is going well enough. The Quest 3 has been very well received and then quality of the VR experience it offers for the pricepoint is undeniably good, especially compared to Apple's AR experience at 5x the price. And surprisingly, Meta is the company publishing the most notable VR game since Half-Life Alyx. Every other major FAANG company has utterly and completely bungled video game development and publishing.

I'm hoping Valve comes out with a cheaper replacement for the Index. I don't need standalone VR, I have a 4080 that will continue to be faster than anything you can strap to your face for the next decade or more.

I still almost exclusively use the Quest through PCVR and play mostly via Steam VR. The only game I don't use it for PCVR is Resident Evil 4 VR, which only seems available on the headset itself.

Perhaps Meta wishes it did better, people really do buy and sell VR games on Meta’s store. Multiplayer experiences are a weak point, which particularly stands out because that is Meta’s strength in real life.

From what I’ve heard facebook is very much alive and well… at least outside of major US cities and in other countries. I was just reading recently how small towns basically use facebook pages instead of websites or keeping google maps up to date. They also still use groups to coordinate events. It’s still apparently the easiest way to get information out?

Sigh, yup. Only reason I still have a FB account is because so much stuff is coordinated via FB.

I wonder what it is about me that causes me to be uninterested in all of these mental sugar platforms, and if it's possible for me to infect others with that trait. I quickly lose interest in insubstantial media.

Having just flown across the country to see family I noticed the people next to me immediately open up Instagram once we landed. I usually open up Tildes!

It just seems odd to me, probably because if something is advertised online, especially by an "influencer" it tends to be something I stay away from. And if anything my purchases might come from fb marketplace so its the local seller who is benefitting, not Meta.

Instagram has the best targeted ads in the business and people are absolutely spending many millions of dollars on the products advertised there.

Ad prices are based on an automated auction between companies targeting a specific interest/demographic and whoever is willing to pay the highest price gets their ad shown. Companies would not be spending millions of dollars on ads here if there wasn’t a huge return on investment (we’re talking costs of $5+ a click for the most competitive demographics) but the ad targeting is just that good. And with a billion active users there’s plenty of supply to be had.

I think a lot of us more tech savvy, older internet folks kind of have an immunity (and ad block) to ads but for the vast majority of people they are very effective. My wife likes seeing ads on Instagram because they show her things she is genuinely interested in that she had no idea existed.

I think Instagram is their best product. My take over all is that photos have a great ratio of viral impact to toxicity.
