Beyond just this being another story of AI generation being used for racist purposes, the wild part is that this is apparently an intentional marketing stunt coordinated by the CEO of an AI marketing company. And this piece of anti-Indian racism is done by what is apparently an Indian CEO.

The telling part is that the AI generated videos specifically mentioned being asked about speaking Punjabi, which is a rather specific language to be asked about in the context of a Tim Hortons job interview.

Something not explicitly highlighted in this article is that this very much seems to be another example of Hindu/Sikh conflict, which has been happening more and more frequently in this region of Canada, specifically around Brampton (a suburb of Toronto that is known for having a high population of Indian immigrants). Without leaning into too many assumptions without doing some detective work on individuals mentioned, this really feels like another entry in the Hindu/Sikh conflicts, specifically to introduce this idea of "good" and "bad" Indians to Canada and not the usual "white supremacy" racism we've been seeing a lot of recently.

I read a while back that Cisco employees not of South Asian descent had to go through training on what caste discrimination looks like and how to spot it - something that many of them probably didn't expect the company to be proactive on.

It's a defining moment in history for whether the white world can reconcile with their own racist history, but I'm always more than a little bummed out by all of the oxygen it swallows up.

Discrimination is a subject, a behavior and an action that belongs to all of us and it's valuable to recognize that.

That's funny, I guess the people that are South Asian descent get a pass on the training even though they are the ones doing the discrimination? Not a surprise that Cisco needs to have caste discrimination training in place because they were sued by the California Civil Rights Department for that very thing.

And to your point about how it's valuable to recognize that discrimination, a bill making caste a protected category made it past the California state legislature only to be vetoed by Newsome because it's "unnecessary," no doubt after the wonderful lobbying from these fine people.

This is a bizarre story to begin with. This is your best use of AI? You could pay a ton of 20 year olds a few hundred to be the voice for whatever you want to say. How inefificient. On a more...

On a more general point: it's sad but not surprseing to hear. We're in a bad, recessionary economy. When this happens we always have this rise in (as South Park puts it) "They took our jobs!" rhetoric. Blaming the fellow working class for their issues instead of the powers above who are the ones cutting jobs to meet some bottom line. We need to not be so short sighted on who we assign blame to in these times.

He seems to be stopping juuuust shy of saying "I wanted lots of people to see it, and people share racist videos."

Quite honestly, I think we may be counting the days until we see the headline "Riot caused in reaction to AI generated video."

We already had a genocide in Myanmar a decade ago caused by misinformation spread on Facebook. It would hardly be anything new to have something like that caused by AI.

I'd be kinda surprised if it hasn't already happened. The amount of racial violence stirred up by false Facebook posts and misinformation deserves court sentencing. Not that jailing people will solve the problem, but the bulk of lies used to stoke hate online were already in motion before AI videos were so easily made.
