10M people watched a YouTuber shim a lock; the lock company sued him. Bad idea.

And while there are a few gems in it that aren't mentioned in the Ars article, like the fact that Ron Lee, Proven's CEO, is not just a triple felon, but one previously convicted of felony witness tampering. However, this funny little interaction between the Judge and Proven's lawyer at the end was my favorite part:

THE COURT: ... How much time do you need to file the Amended Complaint you'd like to file now?
MR. FAHEY: 14 days, seven days, whichever Your Honor sees as reasonable.
THE COURT: Lawyers can't do anything in seven days, that's been my --
    MR. FAHEY: 30 days.
THE COURT: All right. The Court will give you 21 days to file the Amended Complaint ...

I LOVE court proceedings, jury duty, and law. One of my first formative books was the literal, unabridged, court transcripts of the Lizzie Borden trial. If I could volunteer for jury duty I would. You've given me 129 pages of absolute entertainment tonight and I love you for it.

Hah, me too! Although not the jury duty part, due to my panic disorder. I can't think of many worse places to have a panic attack than in a court of law. ;) But I do love a good courtroom drama, and reading court transcripts. There are often some pretty funny moments hidden in them, especially because of how low most Judges tolerance for bullshit is. I even watched the Depp v Heard defamation trial almost in its entirety because of how fascinating I found it. :)

I've been called to jury duty a handful of times, all but once was dismissed before selection even occurred, and the one time I got to selection I was at the back of the room with zero chance of actually getting on the jury.
Of the times I've needed to go to court, I usually make it a point to show up early and stay late if I can, just to watch the other cases. Great people watching; one of the last times a guy was defending himself (someone who defends themselves in court has a fool for a client and counsel) for a public drunkenness charge. It went as well as you can imagine.

🤦 Hah, oof, I bet. Speaking of people representing themselves, I don't know if it still exists, but during COVID I used to watch this awesome US Judge who streamed his courtroom on YouTube. There wasn't often lawyers involved in the cases since it was just a Municipal court where regular people typically sat before the judge for all sorts of minor offenses and claims. I actually quite enjoyed watching that too for similar reasons, seeing the good and bad side of people representing themselves.

Edit: Found it. Caught In Providence. And awww, damn, that really sucks; It doesn't exist anymore... because the judge actually died earlier this year. :(

CBC - Judge Frank Caprio, known online as the 'nicest judge in the world,' dead at 88

If I remember correctly, one of Judge Caprio's sons is also an attorney, so maybe there's a chance he'll take up his father's legacy, become a judge, and reboot the YouTube channel at some point. Who knows... :)

It's Dr Finke! He's Daniel Tosh's wife's OBGYN as well, delivered both their children, and was interviewed on Tosh's podcast last year:

Heh, yeah, Tosh is still around. He still does pretty huge tours, and has the podcast now too. I used to love Tosh.0, and I've always really liked him as a comedian. He's "edgy" but unlike most other "edgy" comedians he's not mean spirited about it at all. And it also helps that despite his trollish jokester facade, he's actually a fellow "woke lefty" who cares about other people's feelings and supports LGBTQ+ rights too.

She's a singer, I don't follow her, just enough lawyers to get exposed to clips from the trial since it was aired. It was an enjoyable watch. I suspect reading it would go similarly well.

Without having actually paid attention to it when it was happening, I second the Cardi B testimony recommendation, but you've got to actually watch some of it at least. Cardi is such a character, you have to see her facial expressions and hear the full Bronx accent to truly appreciate the hilarity of it.

The next day, Lee texted McNally’s wife. The message itself was apparently Lee’s attempt to de-escalate things; he says he thought the number belonged to McNally, and the message itself was unobjectionable.

How could he possibly think that texting someone's phone could de-escalate the situation?? I had to pause there because that just blew me away. Even if he had texted McNally instead of his wife, just getting his phone number is alarming.

That aside, I saw the videos as they were released so I knew about the basics and the impending court case. The comments were full of people laughing, me included because... Well, McNally works with The Lockpicking Lawyer. Can't think of a better expert to consult for a court case like this, he'd probably already done research in anticipation of similar claims.

Still good to read a full breakdown and the resolution. The article gives me the impression that Ron Lee was the main instigator, with his employees having to scramble to try to mitigate the backlash. Like the article notes, the video response was pretty professional in tone and could've left off the exchange on a high note. Lee was the one who messaged McNally first with threats, and the court filing felt like just trying to assauge someone's bruised ego.

That said, it's still a bit unsettling to see how McNally's fanbase doxxed Lee's phone number and harassed him and his family (who threatens a freaking child!?). After that, I totally understand why Proven's witnesses were wary of backlash. Even if McNally didn't encourage or condone it, large fanbases can be terrifying when they single someone out as an enemy. I'm also a bit uneasy at how the court opened with the line about thinking Proven's lawyer said his name was "No Idea". The court and judge seemed biased against Proven from the start—which, while Proven didn't have a leg to stand on and the judge probably saw through it as a frivolous case even before reaching the courtroom, just feels a bit bad to me after the actions of McNally's fanbase.

Though I wonder what sealing the case would even accomplish, seeing as we apparently already have that line available on the internet.
