Of all the tech out there, i do find these...well...recording devices just sitting in your living room the most insidious. Even if they aren't doing anything with them yet, the concept is just so so dangerous, and YES i'm not thrilled about my phone/tv/monitor doing it either.
I does quite well with these things. I have not had any problems. For the record I have 9 Google nests, 7 Google TV/chromecasts, 2 Google audios, and a bunch of other smart objects.

When Gemini launched and replaced it, it just told me how to do these things (incorrectly I might add) when prompted to do them, so I swapped back to the functional app.

When Gemini came out and enabled itself, I tried with it and it gave me the same response as you. Told me how, incorrectly, and couldn't just do what it was told to do. So I immediately turned it off.

I just go through and disable and lock them out (hasn't been too hard to find the right settings) because I find the assistants to intrude at weird times. I'm sure it's not fully shut down, but shut down enough. I've never found their integration into the phone to be useful for how I'd want to use them.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding how it works but I thought those functions would require the Assistant to perform that function. I had all sorts of Android Auto issues when it was using Gemini originally before I figured out how to disable Gemini and have it switch back to the old Google Assistant.

I haven't had time to tinker and figure out how to expose the limited amount of functionality to use voice with Android Auto without having the full assistant enabled. I thought I had it working on my S10 (changed to a Xcover Pro 7 at the new year), and haven't had as much time to mess with it.
Maybe it's no longer as easy to mostly lock out the assistant except for when using Android Auto. I haven't really looked into Graphene (other than knowing it exists), but does it have its own agent? Can't imagine Gemini is super compatible with what the project is trying to accomplish.

With that said, if I have to have an LLM as an assistant, the more localized I can keep it the better. I've been getting annoyed with Google anyway in many other areas so I'm fine making a switch away from them if needed.

One of these recent updates for my Pixel switched Gemini on by default and I had to go out of my way to switch assistant back on instead because I didn't want a voice to tell me everything it was doing every time I just want to turn on the lights in the living room, and there's no option to mute Gemini for some godforsaken reason.
I just want a voice activated remote control, is that so much to ask for? Why does it have to come with the acceleration of human misery?

I was shocked when one day it had the normal female voice that it had always had, to the next day when it had a weird deep voiced male voice.

Over the years, I outfitted many of the rooms in our house with Google home minis. I would get them on sales and such. $15-30 for an okayish speaker in a room was pretty worth it. Most of the rooms even have stereo pairs. Even though the minis are tiny, a stereo pair is actually quite decent. But we all used them so infrequently that the setup kinda languished. Once the Apple Watch got multiple timers, the main use case for my homes, kitchen timers, went away. I think they are still plugged in, but nobody in the house has used any of them in years.

It doesn't appear that you are losing these functions, it is just a different AI assistant. They are moving devices to Gemini.
Gemini is worse for everything I care about. I only want timers, alarms, reminders, and home automation.
