Of all the tech out there, i do find these...well...recording devices just sitting in your living room the most insidious. Even if they aren't doing anything with them yet, the concept is just so so dangerous, and YES i'm not thrilled about my phone/tv/monitor doing it either.

When Gemini launched and replaced it, it just told me how to do these things (incorrectly I might add) when prompted to do them, so I swapped back to the functional app.
I didn't get the email though, my phone no longer receives updates, I wonder if that means I'm grandfathered in like android auto cars are?
I got this email today. I've been avoiding Gemini as much as possible but it's looking like it's finally going to be time to swap to iOS or install Graphene OS onto my Pixel.

You can always just disable the digital assistant. I've never used Bixby, Google Assistant, or Gemini on my phones. I just go through and disable and lock them out (hasn't been too hard to find...

I just go through and disable and lock them out (hasn't been too hard to find the right settings) because I find the assistants to intrude at weird times. I'm sure it's not fully shut down, but shut down enough. I've never found their integration into the phone to be useful for how I'd want to use them.
To be fair I rarely use the assistant as is with the exception of setting timers or asking about what the weather will be tomorrow, but I've found the assistant is quite useful when paired with...
To be fair I rarely use the assistant as is with the exception of setting timers or asking about what the weather will be tomorrow, but I've found the assistant is quite useful when paired with Android Auto while I'm driving, especially if I'm trying to ask for directions or search up a song on Spotify hands free.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding how it works but I thought those functions would require the Assistant to perform that function. I had all sorts of Android Auto issues when it was using Gemini originally before I figured out how to disable Gemini and have it switch back to the old Google Assistant.
That's a good point, I forgot about that. I have my digital assistant set to Firefox right now (which doesn't do anything, so it's a nice placeholder in that respect), but realized a couple months...

I haven't had time to tinker and figure out how to expose the limited amount of functionality to use voice with Android Auto without having the full assistant enabled. I thought I had it working on my S10 (changed to a Xcover Pro 7 at the new year), and haven't had as much time to mess with it.
Maybe it's no longer as easy to mostly lock out the assistant except for when using Android Auto. I haven't really looked into Graphene (other than knowing it exists), but does it have its own agent? Can't imagine Gemini is super compatible with what the project is trying to accomplish.

What happens to all the little speaker things? Isn't that what those operate on? Didn't seem to be mentioned in the article
