Maybe I'm being dismissive or out of touch here, but why is this guy important exactly? I grew up with the internet, but mostly eschewed YouTube celebrities and social media as a complete waste of resources and time. What does he do that somehow merits being part of an internet phenomenon that has made him obscenely rich? How does he contribute meaningfully to society? I'm not being sarcastic—I genuinely don't know since I've never watched him.

I swear YouTube must have to be one of the biggest timesinks of the modern era. Beyond a handful of interesting and nuanced channels, it appears to otherwise be a repository of banal nonsense and pop culture noise.

He's not exactly important, but he's popular mostly because of luck, general mass appeal, along with time. Most large youtubers who've been around as long as PewDiePie have moved on, or stopped doing youtube.

What makes any celebrity deserving of their riches and success? PewDiePie provides a service: entertainment, to a large amount of people. Because of this he gets paid. This is the same as any other celebrity. Judging caliber of this entertainment is up to you, I suppose.

EDIT: To elaborate on the "general mass appeal" statement (although this is all speculative), I believe that PewDiePie nailed the, "play a video game while making funny commentary and editing the boring parts out" formula, relatively early into the history of youtube, and thereby grew really quickly. Recently he's also been just controversial enough to gain lots of publicity but not controversial enough to warrant any action/deplatformation against him. He also made a subreddit that hits the front page of Reddit pretty often, which probably contributes somewhat.

Being in the limelight this long and avoiding career-crushing controversy requires some intelligence and skill. I wouldn't sell this guy short.

My kids and their friends know him as the original YouTuber. He’s basically the default that kids look up and subscribe to when they get their YouTube account, not necessarily because they love the content, but because it’s the topic of discussion at school. In fact today I took a few kids to the beach and they were discussing pewdiepie and whether or not he’s a nazi. The real reason he’s popular though is because he’s “a repository of banal nonsense and pop culture noise” that pretty much any kid with internet can access and find entertaining enough to be the “water cooler” topic of discussion.

I don't deign to care about him or his cult, but yes, he is just another dime-a-dozen internet celebrity, with the exception that he is so obscenely popular that he's basically capable of gaining more followers with the sheer force of gravity.

Or, to put it much less cynically, he's simply a popular entertainer who is successful from monetizing his personality.

Their jobs all have intricacies you don't necessarily think about (ranging from video editing to improv skills), but at the end of the day, these are people who are paid to be looked at / listened to.

I got into Pewdiepie a little bit before the sub to pewdiepie thing started when he was doing a lot of commentary and using his insider knowledge of youtube to color his thoughts other youtube drama. He was the only commentary channel that I'm aware of (not that I'm aware of a ton) that would just give an honest take. Being a "victim" of internet pileups himself, he sometimes steps in to defend someone that he feels is wrongly being "cancelled". For that period of his channel, I'd say post-n-word through t series saga, it was this really great introspective meta channel.

If you're talking about his actual gaming videos which have always made him more money but are less interesting, IMO, I guess it's just escapist entertainment. Whatever you find yourself doing for fun, some grouch can say that it's not contributing to society and it's a huge time sink. I don't think that being an entertainer is such a shameful profession. And btw, some people might call him "obscenely rich", I wouldn't. There are far more financially successful youtubers, and as a whole, they are making less than most other celebrity type people. He has certainly made a lot of money on Youtube, but he's also put in a lot of work. I can understand that you personally don't appreciate that work, but he has millions of fans that do.

How does any generic celebrity contribute meaningfully to society? Are celebrities, Internet or otherwise, required to contribute meaningfully to society? Not sure they sign a contract for that.

YouTube can be trained. For me it mostly shows accordion videos, and that's how I like it.

Yep. Takes time and diligence, but can be done. You make sure to mark it as you don't want to see updates about X, Y, or Z ever time something you don't want to see comes up. You do the same for suggested channels and videos related to what you've watched. I also am diligent about removing any video that is sent to me that I don't want in my history to stop suggestions. As a result I can't recall the last time I had to tell it I didn't want to see something and I only get updates on my subscriptions, documentaries, history, 3D printing, CNC, and cars.

I actually popped in here as I was kinda annoyed by the fact that I don't have a filter system on tildes yet, like RES on reddit, and the words "pewdiepie" or "pewds" wasn't filtered out.

EDIT: Thank you oh great /u/Don_Camillo for the filter info!

Tildes has a filter system, based on tags and groups. I never get to see anything news and trump related. But this topic needs the pewdepie tag for it to work ;-)

PewDiePie surpasses 100m subscriber mark on YouTube

T-Series, the popularity of which rose in step with wider internet access in south Asia, now has almost 110 million subscribers. For context, Justin Bieber has 46 million, Rihanna has more than 32 million and Drake has almost 19 million.

Maybe a dumb question, but how reliable are those numbers? Meaning; how many of them are actual users and how many are bots? Trying to find an answer in DDG just gave me a bunch of links to buy YouTube subscribers, so that's not very encouraging.

Seeing as he's getting 20,000,000 views every day, I'd say his 1-2 million subscribers per month seems pretty realistic. This of course raises the question of legitimate view counts, but at this level of viewership, I'd imagine that YouTube has an interest in not inflating his numbers and thus overpaying him.
