I'm rate-limited to one comment reply every two hours

I understand that Tildes implements rate limiting for replies to comments in order to discourage excessive back-and-forth debates or arguments. My current rate limit is one reply every 2 hours. So, if I reply to a comment on one post and then try to reply to a comment on another post, it tells me I have to wait 120 minutes (minus however many minutes since my last comment) until I can comment again.

Is this the normal rate limit? If so, don't people find this... limiting?

Update (2025-04-09 at 08:22 UTC): I was just able to comment twice within ten minutes, so it seems the rate limit has disappeared as mysteriously as it appeared.

I’m wondering if a bug or something caused it to submit multiple times rapidly, possibly triggering the rate limit.

Not sure if PMs get around the rate limit or not, but feel free to PM me your answer if they do.

EDIT: @deepdeeppuddle PMed me and said that they weren’t using an app. They said they use Chrome on iOS and Chrome on Windows to access the site. I also learned that rate limits do not affect PMs.

I find five minutes limiting and have only been hit with it a few times. 120 sounds like a mistake? Not a clue

I think the default rate limit for comments is supposed to be 10 replies within one hour. Ancient discussion when it was first added.

I believe Tildes uses base 36 for its IDs (each character/digit can be one of [0-9a-z]). Each new post increments the short link counter by 1. E.g., this post is 1n53, and the previous post was 1n52.

The preceding zeros are omitted. So, when we reach post zzzz (probably in a good 300 years assuming the same post activity) the next post will have the short link 10000.

So the chance of that url being pee is 36^3 = 46656? :P

This also tells us the oldest currently accessible post on tildes is https://tildes.net/~irrelevant.string/2/irrelevant_string ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So if you feel like it you could even refer to the referenced post via https://tildes.net/~pee/pee/pee ^^

Are you still being rate limited, @deepdeeppuddle? I know people can get rate limited to a few minutes between posts when they post topics or comments too frequently, and I have even experienced that myself. But I've never heard of anyone being rate limited to 2 whole hours before because of that. So I presume this is a bug... unless you have an alt account that recently had a bunch of comments labeled with Malice and/or removed by @Deimos? That's the only other circumstance besides a bug that I know of which can potentially get you rate limited by longer increments.

p.s. @Deimos is the only person that can help if it is just a bug though. So hopefully now that they've been pinged by me they will see this topic and can help you.

I'm still rate limited. I've only ever had one Tildes account, this one.

In that case, it's very likely a rather unfortunate bug then. So @Deimos will hopefully be along at some point to fix it when he can.

The rate limit can also be increased, ask me how I know, if you have been in recent heated arguments that have been removed as a way of giving you some time to cool off.
