Announcing Tildes' Make Something Month (Timasomo) for 2021!
What is Timasomo?
Timasomo is "Tildes' Make Something Month": a creative community challenge that takes place in the month of November. It was inspired by NaNoWriMo, the National Novel Writing Month. This is Timasomo’s third year running!
You can see the threads for previous Timasomos using the timasomo tag. Here are the final showcase threads from past years featuring participants' creative works:
Timasomo 2020 Showcase
Timasomo 2019 Showcase
What are the rules?
Timasomo is self-driven and its goals are self-selected. On November 1st, participants will commit to a creative project (or projects) that they plan to complete within the month of November. There is no restriction on the methods/products of creativity: writing, painting, code, food, photos, crafts, songs -- if it's creative expression for you, it works for Timasomo!
Though most will be participating individually, collaborations are welcome too!
What is the schedule?
Timasomo begins November 1st and ends November 30th. All creative output towards your goal(s) should be confined to this time. This week prior to the start of November is for planning, and there will be a few days at the beginning of December given to "finishing touches" before we have our final thread, which will be a showcase of all the completed works. Below are the dates that I will be posting weekly threads:
Monday, October 25, 2021: Announcement/Planning Thread
Monday, November 1, 2021: Roll Call Thread
Monday, November 8, 2021: Update Thread #1
Monday, November 15, 2021: Update Thread #2
Monday, November 22, 2021: Update Thread #3
Monday, November 29, 2021: Final Update Thread
Monday, December 6, 2021: Timasomo Showcase Thread
Can I participate?
Yes! Timasomo is open to anyone on Tildes! The greater Tildes community is also encouraged to participate in discussion threads even if you are not actively working towards a creative goal. This is meant to be an inclusive community event -- all are welcome! If you are interested in participating but do not have a Tildes login, please e-mail the invite request address here for an invite to the community.
This announcement is posted in ~tildes.
All Timasomo process threads will be hosted in ~creative.
The final Timasomo Showcase thread will be posted in ~talk.
If you wish to participate or follow the proceedings, please make sure you are subscribed to ~creative.
If you wish to view the showcase, please make sure you are subscribed to ~talk.
Do I have to share my creation(s) publicly?
Tildes is a privacy-respecting site, and you are not obligated to share your creation here if you do not want to. We'd still love to hear about it though, if you're willing to share process and details!
How do I enter?
Participants will formally announce their plans to enter into Timasomo on November 1st in the Roll Call thread posted in ~creative.
What if I have ideas for how to run the event?
Please share them here! I am facilitating the event, but I am completely open to feedback and suggestions to make this the best event possible. I want this to be Tildes' event, not kfwyre's!
This Thread: Planning!
This year I'm rolling the announcement and planning thread into one. Feel free to use this thread to post ideas, give feedback on others' ideas, set up collaborations, and ask any questions you have. Everything in here is non-committal -- you won't be officially entering until the Roll Call thread is posted, so this is just a big community brainstorm.
Also, please do NOT start work yet! Planning and other preparations are allowed before the first (e.g. acquiring supplies/materials), but save the creative process for the 1st!
I'm looking forward to another great round of awesome projects!
I have to begin this Timasomo with an apology to @AugustusFerdinand, @Gyrfalcon, and @eve. Last year you three suggested moving the event to October and I, in all honesty, completely forgot about that until right now. In fact, the whole event kind of got away from me until I looked at my calendar today and went "oh crap, I forgot about Timasomo!".
Sorry, y'all! I'm thinking we can make that swap next year if people are still on board with it.
No worries! I totally forgot I suggested it to be in October. I'm glad you're starting it again this year, I'll definitely be participating again!
I'm with @eve and forgot about suggesting October in addition to completely forgetting Timasomo was coming up and have nothing in mind to make!
Crisis!
Well this makes three people who forgot about that suggestion, so it's all good. Since I've been pretty unproductive this last year on some of my projects at least I have some ideas!
Just because of how my free time lines up, I may as well submit my mini corexy 3D printer, since that's when I'll be working on it anyway. Well hopefully I'll finish that month. Basically a no-compromises ~150x150x150mm build area printer in a 240x240x200mm footprint, my own design, rugged, portable, and capable of printing at fairly high speed with just about any material an FDM printer can handle. I'll put more details in once the event kicks off properly.
I’ll be interested in reading this - I’m just finishing up a slightly modified Voron 2.4 build.
My inspiration was the microcube, but using aluminum extrusions, belts, linear rails, and a heated bed.
Neat, I haven’t seen that machine before. If you’re enclosing it, may I recommend a Nevermore?
I probably won't be enclosing it, since it'll probably be an entirely PLA/PETG machine. It's bowden, I'd rather use my direct drive duplicator i3 for flexible filament.
Okay well first off the pro strategy to not run out of ideas is to never actually work on some of your personal projects outside of Timasomo, so your ideas stay fresh.
With that in mind, I'm going to make the first post on my website in a year. I think I am going to read through the Global Trends 2040 report that came out earlier this year, and talk about how the smart people in the intelligence community view climate change. I've looked a bit into the report earlier this year, so I can already tell you it's... not great, but that comes with the territory.
I also got into soap making this summer, so if I can get my current batch out of my mold relatively soon, or get my hands on a better mold that doesn't take weeks for the soap to come out, I may try an experimental batch with some olive oil instead of the 100% coconut oil that I have been doing.
I've got some keyboards to make. I need to work out somewhere to solder them all up as currently I've got no workshop space and live in a building with a very sensitive fire alarm. Technically they're two macro pads but they're large ones.
Backup plan is to finally get around to building the open source Alexa/googlehome/Siri alternative using a pi and speaker I've got. That shouldn't require soldering and I can use hot glue to build a simple case until workshop spaces open up post covid.
Hmm. I may struggle this year. Although I'm saying that because right now my back really hurts and my nerves are all jangly so doing anything seems scary and unattainable. Next week things might (hoping "will") be different.
OK, I'll have a go.
I'm going to make a tiny sword. I have some plans, somewhere, for an Iron age style sword of a mere 12cm blade length. If I can't find the plans I'll draw up more. Proper sword, just small. Not a toy. Hardened and tempered carbon steel. Sharp. Bronze crossguard and pommel. Wood and leather handle. If all goes well, some kind of stand as well.Nope. I remembered something else I wanted to make and this is a good opportunity to kick myself into putting some time into it. A hori hori knife, and possibly a sheath for it as well but I know nothing of leatherworking.. I have quite a lot of family and friends who like gardening so if I can get one (or even more, but let's not go mad here!) of these made I will be not just doing something fun and creative, I'll also be ticking things off my christmas gift-getting list.
This is a great opportunity for me to finally build the Naked60 that I have sitting around. I bought it maybe half a year ago, and I have the soldering equipment and everything, I just never got around to actually building it out!
I was just yesterday considering what my next project should be, so this is great timing. I just completed my first "prop" build, which was a half-scale Halo Needler for a friend. There are so many printed but unfinished (sanding/painting) models on my work bench, it was really great to finish something.
I'm thinking my next project will be a Lex Prime from Warframe, for a friend who has been playing Warframe a lot during the pandemic and being a new dad.
I think I'll probably use timasomo to finish a scarf I'm making. I've really put it on the back burner and simply focusing on that for November will be helpful, I think. Nothing gets me working hard like an arbitrary due date lol.
Depending on how far I get, I may also throw some other craft stuff into the mix but we'll see. Most of my October has been taken up by art commissions so I'm hoping to do something else.
Oh cool! I think I will try to participate again, if I figure out what I want to do. Last year I randomly made a Interactive Fiction game and that was pretty fun, so maybe I'll make another one for Timasomo. Or maybe I'll try to make some more music. Well, but whatever the thing is that I'll be making, I'll definitely try to find at least one weekend or a few free days and make something. Thanks for hosting this again!
Yay! I have a project I really want to finish in November, and this will be great motivation to do so. :)
I want to participate, but I'm not sure what to do. Been in a bit of a creative funk for a while, but I might do the update to my 3D printer that I've been planning for... well almost 2 years. Maybe more than 2 years? I have a new print head, and some updates to do. That could be fun.
Edit: got it. I've been thinking of building a third PC for a while I'll do that.
I'm probably going to be joining, but I still can't decide what to do/make.
I've got it narrowed down to:
Considering how my gamedev attempt last year went, I'm tempted to axe that idea and go with one of the other two.
I've been trying to make an optical illusion dice stand that makes it look like dice are floating in a void. It's been ongoing for the last year or so with limited (but not no) success, but a recent unrelated project ended up accidentally being the breakthrough I needed, so I think I'll try and finish this design and creating a fully working prototype.
The recent breakthrough was a rush job for a friend's wedding. He needed something that would show off a very dim flame. My test photos of it using a candle looked incredible, they look like a bad photoshop which is kind of amazing and exactly what I needed.
I’d love to participate and my wish would be to make a short choreography on ice for this but I fear it’s too early for me to do a good full one. Next year?
In the mean time I’m pretty uninspired.
Does it have to be a month of working on just one creative 'item'? If not, I'd like to join because I have some music that's been stuck in the 'just the finishing touches' stage for a while now...
Last year someone made an album, so you could certainly do that, though one of the ideals is that the creative work is contained to the month at hand.
Nope! Work on as many things as you like.
Timasomo 2021 has officially begun!
Remember that all process posts will be in ~creative, so please make sure you are subscribed there if you would like to participate or follow the process.
