Inside Job creator confirms show has been cancelled by Netflix
@Shion Takeuchi:
I'm sorry guys, it's true.💔#insidejob pic.twitter.com/MQZJ3S7gRD
Boo. It looks like the golden age of animation in streaming is behind us, with HBO and Netflix cutting back their studios, and everyone trying to fight over a shrinking pie.
Feel like stuff like this is bad for their business model long term. Why bother getting invested in anything new if it'll just be abruptly cancelled? Increasingly, I think people will just subscribe to Netflix for the occasional big show that will actually get an ending and leave it the rest of the time.
How the hell did Paradise PD get 4 seasons and Inside Job got 2?
I am still upset about the cancelation of The OA. The first season especially was some of the best of its genre that I have ever seen and I still think about it. There, the seeds were planted for the five season arc, but we never got to see them bloom. The canvas for larger projects like this are shrinking at Netflix. When even Ozark needs to contend with the possibility of being canceled it sends signals to creators just how big they can dream.
The ones that really pissed me off were Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, Altered Carbon, Cowboy Bebop, Sense8, The Get Down, Daredevil, and Punisher. And even if it continues going, The Witcher might as well be considered cancelled with Henry Cavill leaving it now. Fuckin' Netflix. :(
IIRC Dirk Gently wasn't entirely Netflix's fault; I think the IP was actually owned by BBC and they're the ones who decided to pull out because of how it was performing on their channel.
Doing some light googling it looks like it was actually being spearheaded by BBC America, and it seems for sure they are the ones who pulled the plug.
I have very mixed feelings on their Cowboy Bebop adaptation. There were some great moments in it but there were also plenty of very bad moments. In any case I do kind of wish that it did get a second season just to see where they would take it from there.
I also hated that they canceled Sense8, but at least they gave it a chance to come to an ending. With OA just stopping where it did it felt like we lost 3/5ths of a holy scripture to the ether.
Ah, well then fuck BBC America too! Dirk Gently's was the one that stung me most, so I have enough hate to go around to all involved on that one. :P
I have somewhat mixed feelings about Cowboy Bebop too... but from a previous comment of mine on it:
Oh FFS.
Maybe this is a somewhat unpopular opinion, but I don't think Inside Job was all that good. I preferred Gravity Falls. I don't think Inside Job took itself seriously enough: I wanted to see more consistent world building and a longer main plot thread. For 'comedy animated sci-fi' I still prefer 'Rick and Morty', 'Solar Opposites' and 'Star Trek: Lower Decks' more.
Also, while I understand fans don't like when shows they follow get cancelled, I like seeing networks doing more experimentation, rather than seeing super long-running but mediocre shows. And since Inside Job didn't really have an overarching main plot anyway, it's not like it ended on a huge cliffhanger.
Although there is an 'animated sci-fi comedy' (sure are a lot of those, huh) show that got cancelled that I did really like: "Infinity Train". So I'm conflicted.
Yep, the other side of "Netflix cancels a lot more shows than competitors" is "Netflix funds way more shows than competitors". It's the strategy of throw shit at the wall and see what sticks. There pluses and minuses, but it's good to remember the counterfactual of "my favorite show got cancelled" might be "my favorite show never existed" as opposed to "my favorite show never got cancelled".
That's a shame. I really enjoyed the show. I was expecting just another generic, raunchy comedy but it actually had a lot of heart.

And the fact that the entire second season leads up to one big Air Bud joke was hilarious.
