I don't watch much late night TV, but contrast this with Seth Meyers, who literally said, "as a white guy, I am not qualified to comment on these [race and gender] issues" and brought people from his staff like Amber Ruffin to the forefront.

As a side note, Amber Ruffin's book You'll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey: Crazy Stories about Racism is fantastic in book or audiobook form.

Amber Ruffin is so funny! Watching her with John Oliver was one of my favorite clips ever.

I don't get how people can take some much crap working with people like that without recording it and secretly posting it online in a montage for all to see what they're really like.

Why would you post it under your name or right in front of him? Film it happening to other people or setup a hidden camera, then make a new account on a popular social media site and post it. Long as it can't be linked to you, it can't hurt your career can it?

Thing is it's a very small pool once they start looking for who leaked things. And even then they could just sack everyone and start over.

Ah, damn, didn't think about sacking the whole crew. That does throw quite the wrench into the idea. :(

I worked for someone moderately well-known/prolific in a rather specific field where it was also quite toxic and I can't think of a time where it would have been appropriate to pull out a phone and start filming. Maybe it would have proven a point, but the power imbalance is a lot to overcome in a situation like that, especially for someone young and dumb like myself who was trying to break into the field but simply wanted to make it to the end of the day without further confrontation after giving my best efforts.

Nevertheless - Ellen, James Corden, Fallon... it seems having a healthy daily talk show working environment is nowadays the exception than the rule.

I love Conan but I'm always scared he's getting one of these articles. He seems perfectly lovely, but the others did too.

He started in ‘93. A lot of cultural change happened between then and now in terms of how people deserve to be treated and respected. That means any of these long running hosts and their management have to be in the habit of continually adapting. Show business is renown for being stubborn to change.

So the odds are something could come out, but it says a lot about those who run a respectable show and their ability to adapt.

Those are just three names amongst many daily talk show hosts who have turned out to be jerks. There are many more who don't have this kind of thing happen.

Wild conjecture continues from this point.

I'm generally pretty good at figuring out a person's personality in a relatively short period of time, especially with men. To me, James Corden and Jimmy Fallon have always had this kind of a-hole energy around them. When they are on TV it seems pretty clear to me that they're adopting a persona, and the more appealing it is the more likely it is to be artificial.

With that being said, pretty much every daily talk show host has some form of a-hole energy. There is something magnetic about it; I honestly don't think that you can become a host without it. The producers must see it; it's a factor that leads to drama and excitement. The main difference is how the hosts use it. Jimmy Kimmel is a pretty good example; he always seems really smug, with a smile that can at times seem condescending, occasionally delivering jokes that have just a slight tinge of darkness to them. He doesn't have so much as a mask that he holds up to hide who he is, but instead just stands at an angle so you see his best side.

That being said, I don't actually watch any of these guys except on rare occasions. Once again, wild conjecture.

Corden and Fallon have also always given me vibes.

I did get to meet and have a conversation with Stephen Colbert, and he actually seems like a generally cool guy and someone who is good to work with. His entire crew was in a good mood and happy to be around him and his fans/show attendees during the filming. He also made time to have a Q&A and made sure to take the time to ask as many questions as there were in the studio. He was kind to everyone and everyone seemed at ease around him.

By contrast, a friend of mine went to a filming of an episode of Ellen before we knew how much of a monster she was. She said that every single employee on set was tense and on high alert, she didn't want to talk to her attendees and wouldn't even talk to her team without being sarcastic.

I realize everyone has good and bad days, but if that's how you act around the public/fans, how do you act without them present?

I remember back in the day, Craig Ferguson was the only late night show I made time to watch. It mostly came down to a very genuine and evolving atmosphere that always felt forced with the other big shows. I remember when Britney Spheres was having a particularly rough patch, Craig just decided not to spotlight those topics comically because of his own issues and just human decency, There was also Geoff; the legendary interviews with Stephen Fry, Desmond Tutu and Robbin Williams; the crumbling basement studio and generally pushing the censor and producer to the limit. Just wholesome chaotic energy all round.

Jimmy Fallon Apologizes to ‘Tonight Show’ Staff After Rolling Stone Report

“Sorry if I embarrassed you and your family and friends…I feel so bad I can't even tell you,” Fallon reportedly told his employees on an all-hands Zoom

Two employees who were in the meeting say Fallon apologized and he said he did not intend to “create that type of atmosphere for the show.”

“It’s embarrassing and I feel so bad,” the employees say Fallon said. “Sorry if I embarrassed you and your family and friends… I feel so bad I can’t even tell you.”

According to the employees, who say the message from the talk show host “felt pretty earnest,” Fallon also acknowledged the amount of turnover The Tonight Show has had in regard to its showrunners. They say Fallon emphasized that current showrunner Chris Miller is “a great leader” and isn’t going anywhere.

“I want the show to be fun, [it] should be inclusive to everybody,” Fallon said, according to the employees. “It should be the best show.”

The most striking thing in this article is how there is none of the industry standard glad-handing from former employees. Nobody would speak on the record -- even to complement Fallon or give the type of press-agent-generated happy talk statement that even the most monstrous sex offenders in the entertainment industry were regularly feted with.

    This silence really speaks volumes.
