I had the exact opposite reaction to it. In my opinion, it started out really strong, but once SPOILER: uvf qhzo fvfgre jvgu ure jrveq Ynaavfgre pbzcyrk fubjrq hc it went into a full tail-spin...

Yeah I'm with you in the last episode or two I was constantly getting exasperated, enough that I'd say things like "oh, come on" out loud (I was watching alone). All in all I enjoyed the show though, nice when a cool SF idea actually has pretty good visual effects. Makes me think of this movie The Sound of Thunder, which was a great idea (based on a Ray Bradbury short story) but the budget was so low it ended up being awful, ha.

I had the same experience, first episode.. ok, let's keep watching... holy crap it really was one of the best things I've seen in years. It even has a satisfactory conclusion to the story in season 1. I'm really excited to see the setting in the new season.

I enjoyed the show until the last couple episodes. Reileen’s character was just ridiculous, even for the already caricatured meths. She was completely unbelievable in both her motivation and her actions. It really took me out of the show. I know I’m not alone in this.
I’m excited to see where the show goes from here. I’m wondering if they’re just going to get an entirely new cast to keep with the theme of the show. It’ll be interesting to watch. I do hope Reileen’s character has run her course. I don’t want to see her as some recurring villain.
I definitely felt like that show jumped the shark when she showed up. I haven't finished the first season but might try again given the love expressed for the show in this sub.

It absolutely did. For me, the jury is still out on whether it was the writing, the acting, or both. She was the one major downside to an otherwise stellar show. Even Ortega’s character gets an explanation for her actions that make them believable and even sympathetic. Reileen’s motivations are immature and cartoonish, and her rationale is far too childish. Especially for someone who is supposedly hundreds of years old.
I think some of that came from how they drastically changed some of the story and that character's motivations were now based on an entirely new premise vs the more complete setup the book put...

I didn't mind that they changed some of the primary aspects of the story for the show, but some parts didn't work quite right for the story after those changes.

Gutting the main plotline in favor of the weird abomination they used, though? Woof. Almost killed the show for me.

The show was still a good watch and sometimes bigger changes pull that comparison away for the better (Starship Troopers is usually my best example for that situation), but I think the changes made to simplify some things ended up making other aspects of the show not line up as cohesively. Like they were forced into place.
I definitely liked Poe being represented in the show compared to Hendrix in the book, but I think that was another way for them to translate other things in the world more simply by just using one character - and it worked in that case.
Even the best acting in the world can't save a poorly conceived plot when it comes to your character's overly-simplified and rather absurd motivations.

Same here, the very last episodes left me with a sense of rushed, unfinished and all around not well thought. Cannot explain it better as I never read the books anyway and don't intend to.

I'm the other way around. I just couldn't stay in the first book, and by the end of it I was dragging my feet the whole way. The show is much better, in my opinion. Better pacing, though I admit a lot of the details they changed were cooler and better in the books. The chemistry between actors was solidly B-list as well, but...everything was done well enough that none of the weaknesses really bring down the whole all that much.

Maybe I'll give the next book in the series a try, then; I definitely enjoyed the writing style, but I found the entire first book not at all compelling.

Honestly, she was one of the worst things about the first season for me. At least her character was. I don’t know if it was the writing or her acting (I haven’t really seen her in anything else), but her character was practically insufferable. The last 3 or so episodes took a massive dip in quality because of it.
Is she better in other stuff? I’ve not seen her in anything else. She chewed so much scenery in this show that it made me question her ability as an actor.

Nice! I have to say, I thought the premise was a little odd and the execution not great initially, but I'm to about the fifth episode now and I'm really enjoying it.

I considered reading the novels, does anybode have a recommendation if they are or aren't worth it?
I thought they had already renewed it... Why did it take until now to renew it? I am nervous about who they'll get to write it, since the first season told the complete story of the original book.

That said, I still enjoyed the hell out of it so I'm really looking forward to Season 2.
That's a brilliant idea, thank you for that!

Yup my thoughts exactly. But I still stuck with it. Looking forward to season 2.

I'm so glad @everyone does not work, and will never work
Oh, me too! That would be a disaster.

I never read the books, but I did check out some synopses. I understand they changed a lot. Especially certain characters’ relationships.
