Space is really cool, but sadly it's still really expensive to get up there.

I've loved 11 Bit Studios ever since This War or Mine, so I was excited to see them put out another game. Frostpunk is the most fun I've had in a city planning simulator; it's got great atmosphere, great optimization challenges, and variety between a few scenarios. Also, I like how the "Book of Laws" really makes me think about how societies make decisions, and how those decisions can be either used or abused.

Discovery was kind of enjoyable at times ... in a least common denominator SF romp kind of way ... but it never really was Trek, and that's what I wanted. I agree that moving forward is the correct way to go, but there is a problem with power creep. Once the Federation has every capability we can imagine, they're no longer something 21st century humans can relate to. That's why I really like your idea of focusing on the notion of warp travel causing ecological damage.

    Yes! I'm Sold!

Newer engines and non-Warp travel methods would be under heavy development (and probably not going all that well).

Can we make fun of the crazy notion of a mushroom network that holds the multiverse together while we're at it? Sadly, since I was very much not a fan of Discovery, I can't imagine CBS writing anything as good as what you laid out here.

Yeah, that's why I'm not excited about this news. I expect a giant 70 episode order to become mediocre very quickly.

I never would have believed how big an issue this is until women I'm friends with started telling me stories. One of them got radiation sickness from working near an antenna at her job, and instead of dealing with that the hospital fobbed her off on a nurse who was sure she must just be pregnant!

sigh maybe if there's ever a PC port. I've never been able to justify the expense and clutter of buying a PS4 when I can already keep myself entertained with the device I have.

The transfer of wealth section is actually the one I agree with most. UBI really only is valuable if the economy can be improved by reducing income and wealth inequality, in which case why not be more efficient about it? I tend to think expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit would be better than UBI, but as long as we can agree that we'll all be better off with a more equal economy (Keynes FTW), the exact policy is just a technical argument.

But, yeah, TLWTASAP did feel like a refreshing change of pace for me. I think because it has an optimism about the inherent goodness of sentient beings, even in a difficult universe, that a lot of other science fiction lacks these days.

I come from a cooking family and it's one of my top hobbies, so I've had so many favorites over the years. Usually I just pick a dish that interests me and play around with it for a while until I feel I know it inside and out.

Right now I'm into cacio e pepe! It's a super simple Italian mac n' cheese, and I really appreciate how fast it is to just grate some cheese and toss it into pasta, but it's also a really fun jumping off point for trying little things to change it up a bit. Like adding a bit of butter, or prosciutto, or rosemary, instead of just making the base version.

That's why I prefer cooking to baking. The improvisational energy of figuring out a dish and then adapting it for my circumstances keeps me engaged.
