Your Weekend Plans
Today seems to be crawling by. I'm sitting here daydreaming about what I'll be doing this weekend, which hopefully includes a lot of sleep.
Who has exciting or pleasant plans for this weekend? What positivity is coming your way?
My wife is doing a small art show this weekend, her first. I'm going to be helping her out by watching the kids, grabbing her food, and keeping her hydrated. It's supposed to be a hot one this weekend here.
Ah, wonderful! It's good to hear you're helping to support her in those ways...especially with hydration! We're experiencing a kind of heat wave currently as well...is the art show in south Florida?
I will be studying. I have a finance final and fingers crossed I pass. If I do, I will be only one class away from my BS. I'm crazy nervous.
Good luck! I've got one assignment left this semester, and then about one more semester before I'm done with my undergrad. Frankly I'm looking forward to getting out and working: the jobs I've had have been so much more fun than studying.
Completely agree. I'm actually a non-traditional student and after nearly 20 years in the workforce, it will be nice to check that box. Fortunately, I haven't been held back by not having my undergraduate degree, but it will be nice to never feel like it is a hindrance going forward.
Hey, how have you found that? I have heard that there can be discrimination and elitism surrounding that. I'm really interested in the uptick in alternative education paths (an example being boot-camp for programming)!
Uuuuuugh, so close! I know those feels. You can absolutely do it, no matter if you feel like you're on your last leg. I was incredibly burned out by the time I got to the end of my BS but still limped through. YOU. CAN. DO. IIIIIIT~!
Finishing the nursery. Gotta put on some baseboard and shelves. Put together the dresser/change table. Gonna paint a this Calvin and Hobbes on the wall as well
A neighbor of mine had painted a large mural with owls on it in their daughter's bedroom, when they put the house on the market they painted over the mural thinking it would sell faster without such a unique thing sticking out in the photos. They told the people that ended up buying the house about the mural and the first thing the new owners said was that they wished it had been left unpainted since their daughter loved owls! I've settled for just using the removable decals in my kids rooms.
Short of both my wife and I losing our jobs it's extremely unlikely we're going to sell our home until we're ready to retire. Once the kiddo is old enough we're going to move her into a larger room and turn the nursery into an office for the wife, we'll likely keep the mural even if she decides to paint the rest.
That quote is subtly bittersweet, I like it a lot. It's amazing how sneaky life can be with its changes.
My best friend is coming into town this weekend I think. Probably just gotta hang out and chill though. May try to build my 3d printer (it's arriving Friday, have to assemble it). Excited!
What kind of 3d printer did you get?
Prusa Mk3 kit!
Have fun! I have the same printer.
I got the Octopi board too, i'm excited to get some awesome vids too!
I went with a pre-built flashforge. It's a blast and I can totally see myself getting an ABS printer eventually.
You may consider using PETG over ABS. PETG has similar advantages like ABS over other materials but without the health risks. There is not a lot of information available yet for health impacts so I found this private experiment of interest. Check out this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUe3jrj87aE
Absolutely. Other financial priorities at the moment though :/
It's always funny to me that home 3D printers are like...put it together yourself, you know? I keep imagining ordering a regular printer and having to put pieces together IKEA-style before it can work lol
Some are haha, this kit is especially. I kinda enjoy putting IKEA stuff together anyway :P
If I were responsible, I'd study for my OpenGL final on Wednesday.
Realistically, though, it's F1 Grand Prix weekend, so I'll probably be out most days with friends.
Who do you predict will get pole position? Who do you predict will win this weekend?
That's too tempting to pass up, I'd be out with friends as well! At least your test isn't on a Monday :P
Preparing to close on a house a week from tomorrow and going to a birthday party for one of our future neighbors on Saturday. I'm excited for the closing process to be over, but then that means moving time.
Congratulations! I would be holding my breath up until the second I got the key...buying a house is such an emotional roller-coaster. Already making friends with the neighbors is awesome, because nothing sucks more than finding out you don't get along with neighbors AFTER moving in lol!
My friends are in town and we're having a LAN party on Saturday. Gonna be good!
Wooooo! That's what I'm talking bout! Will there be takeout or a potluck?
Traveling to Chicago to visit my best friend and go to the yearly outdoor Blues festival!

This sounds like SUCH a good time. I'm not very versed in blues music, but I'd totally be down to attending an event like that if it were nearby.
Going to an Oakland A's game on Saturday and watching E3 stuff/playing overwatch on Sunday.
Ah yes, E3! I completely forgot about it since today has been kind of crazy. Which companies are you going to keep an eye on the most?
Going to AnimeNext with some friends. It's my first time going to that con. Also studying for the Praxis unfortunately. My weekend is a mix of fun and boredom
Having a weekend that's a mix of fun and boredom kind of makes it feel like not a weekend at all lol
What are you wanting to teach?
It's been a while lol but I want to teach science. Unfortunately, I don't think I have enough college credits of bio to teach it in high school
Trying to start my homelab. Pretty excited
Neat, what kind of beer are you going to brew?
Haha different kind of homelab. It’s a home server setup for learning
Welp, TIL. Sorry about that, I confused the term for "homebrew".
Got a roommate who worked in infosec and now works with a ton of migrating servers, so if you have questions, I'll happily pass them along.
This has piqued my curiosity highly. Is it a biotech homelab?
Nah it’s a IT based one
I try to spend time being active and outside on weekends as much as I can, so hiking on Saturday and maybe a bike ride on Sunday. Also going out for dinner on Sunday night and hopefully meeting some new people.
Very inspiring! Please be careful during your activities. I hope the weather holds up for you. What a lovely weekend you have...nature, exercise, socializing, and eating out.
Working overnight all weekend. :( But I like the shift differential and the chance to read at my desk!
If you don't mind my asking, what are you currently reading?
Pet Semetary by Stephen King. I try to save money by checking books out online from my local library on my kindle so don't have many pickings at times. I'm a big Stephen King fan so I figure I gotta read the ones I've missed.
What about you?
Convincing someone to go exploring a nearby city with me! Also finding museums I haven't been too.
This sounds like an adventure! What kind of museums do you like the most? Art, science, etc.
I like all kinds! Mainly history of science and Modern art are my favourite. But I like seeing museums in new cities!
I've been working the past 2 weekends because it's crunch time at work. This weekend I'm taking it easy and relaxing. GF wants to go shopping. We might also see a movie. And I'm going to play a fuck ton of Cultist Simulator.
Just looked up what Cultist Simulator is, what an interesting game. Will this be your first play through? If not, what aspects of the game do you like most?
Were you at least getting OT for the weekend work?
So Cultist Simulator is one of those games where you die a lot and have to restart. So I haven't completed a full play through yet, but I'm getting closer. It's really interesting and unique, one of the most compelling aspects is that it doesn't really teach you how to play beyond the basics. Discovering what the fuck is even going on is a huge part of the fun.
I opted for comp time instead of OT, but yeah, I wouldn't be working this hard for free and my supervisor knows that.
So it's a rogue-like? I mean, it's really caught my attention so I'll be thinking about getting it now haha.
Sort of, but not exactly. Rogue-likes generally have persistent upgrades and unlocks. This doesn't, you just learn more about the game and how to play it.
I really hope I get some time to play Dark Souls 3 with my friends this weekend and catch up on some house work. The grass is getting real high.
Right! At least where I am, one bout of rain made my grass stand a foot tall!
Will this be your first playthrough of DS3?
Actually, it will probably be my 8th playthrough. Haha. Decided to try out the Preacher's Arm and the Moonlight Great Sword. Yeah, it's been raining pretty much constantly and looking like it's about to rain again, so I'm trying to get as much done out there as I can.
28 year old son moved to a new place. I'm helping him run ethernet, mount TVs and speakers, etc.
Woooo! Is this the first time he's moved out? If so, congratulations to him :D Sometimes our weekends require the necessary work to improve our lives for the better, instead of just napping.
OH GOD NO! :)
1st time out he was 18. Moved in with a girl, back with us before he turned 20.
2nd time out he was almost 22. Moved in with a friend and a month later that friend's girlfriend moved in. He moved back in because his mom said he could. She forgot that the last time he drove her nuts. So this final return lasted less than six months.
He moved in with a couple friends, then after two years to his own apartment, then a two years later into another place with another friend who got kicked out after two months for being jobless and not paying rent but somehow being able to afford $400/month in pot.
Typing that out, I'm thinking I have a bit of time missing, but that's the basic gist.
This was moving from that last place to a new place with his current girlfriend who he's going to propose to in August.
He's NOT allowed to come back anymore...
I'm going to be swapping a new battery into my old MacBook, playing way more Factorio than I intended to, and getting ready for a trip to Chicago next week, which should be quite fun.
Aaaaaah, good ol' Factorio. I remember when my husband had a small obsession over that game lol.
I hope you successfully change out the battery, and may your travels be as pleasant as possible! Bon voyage :D
Factorio is amazingly easy to get addicted to. I have friends who have several hundred hours logged over the course of just a few months.
Battery swap went well. Thanks for the good wishes :)
Me and the girlfriend are going to drink a bunch of wine from the box that just arrived from my wine club, and read the Scots-language translation of Harry Potter & The Philosopher's Stone together.
The Scots-language translation of HP&TPS?? Let me know how that is?? :D
