Move with Nicole pilates is one of the greats. No faff, just straight into the workout, and it's always a good challenge. I also really appreciate that she doesn't talk excessively, instead just focuses on what you should be doing, while adding a bit of encouragement right when you're about to give up.

While the inspiration for the author to write this article was a woman in London who gave up flying, the author herself is from Colorado. I thought the article had an interesting dissection of the cultural, emotional, and financial struggles middle/upper class Americans face when thinking about completely giving up flying. She says for example:

voluntarily not flying while friends take holidays in far-flung places feels like nothing but a gaping and pointless loss. And while it takes a certain amount of privilege to be able to fly, it could potentially take an even greater degree of privilege to travel and not fly, given the time and expense involved. Those who have chosen to fly less or not at all say there are trade-offs.

What really made me think though, as a frequent and avid traveler, was her discussion of more conscientious travel. I’ve been thinking about sustainable tourism for years, but never really considered my flights as part of that. I will be thinking about the questions posed here in the future:

Tourism can be a great force for destruction but also a force for tremendous social good, for travelers and hosts. I certainly wouldn’t advise people to stop traveling. I am grateful for innumerable wonderful travel experiences that have entertained, delighted, and expanded my understanding of this planet and its inhabitants, human and otherwise, and deepened my empathy.
But there have also been ways that I have traveled, largely in haste and frequently aboard a plane, that have encouraged a sort of objectification of those places, as if they were products or trophies. When I plop in from out of the sky, my comprehension of a new land and its people is often decontextualized from the living fabric of the earth and my place in it. Could I have even more meaningful and adventurous travel experiences, with greater positive impacts for the places I visited, if I approached travel in a different way? Like opting for longer and more sporadic overland journeys instead of shorter trips with long-haul flights?

I think it’s also relevant that a country like France has an especially strong national identity and culture, which extends to food as well. You can describe the average food culture in France and capture a majority of how the country eats, because the country prides itself on this cohesive “Frenchness”. Whereas describing the food culture in the US based on averages simply doesn’t work because there is too much variation in local, cultural, economic, life factors to describe the entire country, as you said. And I agree with your last question. What’s the point of such generalizations anyways?

I find it mind-boggling that people feel they need to pick a side like this is some sort of sports game?!? Palestinians and Hamas are not the same, the history of conflict in the region is incredibly complex, and most people who are “pro-Palestine” have not read a single article about the geopolitical ramifications of the conflict, and YET these people feel the need to declare an opinion on who they support.

Now that the summer bounty at the farmer's market is in full swing, I'd love to hear about your recipes that showcase the fresh fruits and vegetables you get from the farmer's market, or the garden if you grow your own. I'm thinking of the recipes that really let the flavors of the produce shine.

Two of my favorite farmer's market items are sweet corn and tomatoes, and I've come to realize the corn and tomatoes you can buy at the grocery store are just sad imitations of the real thing. My favorite recipe right now is a simple sweet corn and cherry tomato salad, with a little basil, flaky salt, lime juice, and good olive oil. I'll add mozarella or feta and pepitas sometimes for a little extra oomph, but the simplicity and flavors are heavenly. What are your favorites?

I’m kind of surprised by the negativity here. Do you think it could also be that people like to be around people in similar stages of life? The same reason families like to live where other families live? It makes it easy to form bonds and build community when you’re around other people who share your interests and values.

I used to do this on Reddit too, when I (rarely) wrote out a comment, it's because I thought it would add to the discussion so I wanted it to be high quality. The difference between here and there, though, is usually I would type out this long comment... and just delete it before posting, because there was so much low effort junk that I thought why bother. I love that in depth discussion is valued here!

I would rather have ~talk be serious by default, or have a ~talk.serious and ~talk.casual, rather than sequestering all serious discussion in to specific groups. One thing I really enjoy about tildes is the general, in-depth discussion on a wide variety of topics, and many topics that don’t fit into specific groups. If you push serious discussion to specific groups, we are going to lose the richness of discussion that can occur.

I took a knife skills class and the instructor suggested a wet kitchen towel under the cutting board to prevent slipping. A mat seems more like a nice to have gadget than necessity.
