Made it to Rule 16, and my chess is too rusty to get further. But a fun diversion, anyway.

I got there. I gave it a move that does an immediate checkmate, and it told me that was wrong. I gave up at that point.

Yep - everything I thought could be the "best" move was wrong as far as the Password Game was concerned. At which point I shrugged, closed the browser tab, and went to sleep instead.

Rule 16 was really annoying because there were good moves that should have met that requirement but no.

One thing that tripped me up is forgetting to type + at the end of, for example, Qe4+. I had unambiguously specified what piece moved where, but not following the correct syntax.

So I cheated and plugged the board into the Lichess's board analyzer, which both found the solution and reminded me of the right syntax for it.

Every instance gives you a different board. Same with a lot of the tests like the geoguesser.

I gave up on rule 14 or so when the country name (Lithuania) included a roman numeral (L = 50) that couldn't multiply with another roman numeral to equal 35. I suppose I could have tried lithuania in lowercase.

Edit: Gave up again when the captcha (387g2) and chess move (Nf7+) had digits that summed to higher than 25.

Edit: tried one more time and failed at rule 24 for a reason I won't spoil. :D

I had this problem until I put the “+” symbol at the end to notate “check.” There may be a similar notation for checkmate. I don’t really play chess and had to google the notation.

I did a bit of research combing through people's screenshots of their progress in the game beyond Rule 16, where I was unable to continue.

There's some pretty wild stuff. If y'all are like me and got stuck pretty early but your curiosity is not sated, take a look:

    Warning: spoilers.

Unfortunately, I think I haven't been able to see every rule in my research, but (Thanks to fellow tildes users for assisting!) here's every rule from 16 and beyond:

Rule 16 says "Your password must include the best move in algebraic chess notation." and shows a chess board, with a randomized board state. This is where I personally failed as I am not familiar enough with chess to realistically solve it.

Rule 17 says "🥚← This is my chicken Paul. He hasn't hatched yet, please put him in your password and keep him safe."

Rule 18 says "The elements in your password must have atomic numbers that add up to 200."

(at some point, probably here, your entry field is given some formatting tools)

Rule 19 says "All the vowels in your password must be bolded."

Rule 20 says "Oh no! Your password is on fire. Quick, put it out!" and fills up a bunch of fire emojis in your password input box. Apparently, Paul can burn if you do not clear the fires fast enough.

Rule 21 says "Your password is not strong enough 🏋️" and I'm not sure what the solution is but it might be just spamming a bunch of 🏋️ 🏋️ 🏋️ 🏋️ 🏋️

Rule 22 - courtesy of @em-dash with suspected possible variants:
Your password must contain one of the following affirmations:
    I am loved
    I am worthy
    I am enough

Rule 23 says "Paul has hatched! Please don't forget to feed him, he eats three 🐛 every minute." - At this point, I believe the egg emoji is automatically replaced with a chicken emoji, and you will have to add 🐛🐛🐛 to the password every minute while you're solving other rules or it will fail. As Paul eats them, the bugs actually disappear from your password in real time. You can overfeed him by trying to add a large amount too fast.

Rule 24 says "Your password must include the URL of a 24 minute 7 second long YouTube video." - have fun searching for one while keeping Paul fed... It's also likely to fuck up your roman numerals or other prior answers. Also, the time is randomized, so you can't just borrow someone else's answer which solved, as yours will likely require a different duration video.

Rule 25 says "A sacrifice must be made. Pick 2 letters that you will no longer be able to use." and a keyboard is displayed where you click 2 letters and then click Sacrifice.

Rule 26: Your password must contain twice as many italic characters as bold (26 through 28 courtesy of @pizardwenis96)

Rule 27: At least 30% of your password must be in the Wingdings font

Rule 28: Your password must include this color in hex

Rule 29 - All roman numerals must be in Times New Roman. (thanks to @SteeeveTheSteve for this one)

Rule 30 says "The font size of every digit must be equal to its square."

Rule 31 says "Every instance of the same letter must have a different font size.

Rule 32 says "Your password must include the length of your password.

Rule 33 says "The length of your password must be a prime number."

Rule 34 says "Uhhh let's skip this one." and is automatically checked off

Rule 35 says "Your password must include the current time." so it will basically infinitely require updating.

At the end, which is after Rule 35, it asks you to confirm your password, basically, by opening a second text field and starting a bomb, which supposedly is 2 minutes. I suspect the player may not be allowed to copy and paste, here. The password must be entered exactly correctly as a copy of the first, and I'm not sure but I suspect the temporal rules may still be maintained, such as the current time and feeding Paul.

The country, chess, youtube, and possibly elements of other rules are randomized so you won't be able to rely on other people's answers.

Some users reported that an illegal move on the chessboard was part of the captcha, producing an unwinnable condition, but apparently the captcha can be rerolled at any time.

Some users reported that the country they received in Rule 14 had a letter that made their roman numeral rule 9 impossible (in the example, it was the C in "Cambodia" putting their roman numeral total well above their required 35.) As it turns out, it will accept the country name in lowercase, avoiding this issue.

One user supposedly completed the game, but did not report how many rules there were total. Seems to be 35 rules and then the retype confirmation.

Please let me know if you have seen any of the rules that I was not able to see, and I can add them to my list.

bless, this was what I was trying (and failing) to figure out. I was refreshing the page until I got one that I could walk around in and get readable text. One was in Spanish and I tried translating it since I speak Spanish somewhat, and then googling my translation, then realized I'm an idiot and googled the original Spanish text, and got the answer immediately. The next one that worked for me, I just recognized the Japanese alphabet so that was easy enough.

Details if you're curious (game spoilers)...

I use Privacy Redirect to redirect all YouTube embed requests through Invidious instances. Rule 24 loads a video directly into the page to verify its running length. But it doesn't know how to interact with the Invidious player and gets stuck in a loop. Since I can't disable the plugin without refreshing the page (and losing my progress) I threw in the towel here.

I played this a couple weeks ago, then after I beat it I took it apart a bit.

    All rules

    4. Your password must include a special character.
    5. The digits in your password must add up to 25.
    6. Your password must include a month of the year.
    7. Your password must include a roman numeral.
    8. Your password must include one of our sponsors: [logos for Pepsi, Starbucks, and Shell]
    9. The roman numerals in your password should multiply to 35.
    10. Your password must include this CAPTCHA: [a CAPTCHA]
    11. Your password must include today's Wordle answer.
    12. Your password must include a two letter symbol from the periodic table.
    13. Your password must include the current phase of the moon as an emoji.

    15. Your password must include a leap year.
    16. Your password must include the best move in algebraic chess notation.
    17. 🥚 ← This is my chicken Paul. He hasn't hatched yet, please put him in your password and keep him safe.
    18. The elements in your password must have atomic numbers that add up to 200.
    19. All the vowels in your password must be bolded.
    20. Oh no! Your password is on fire. Quick, put it out!
    21. Your password is not strong enough 🏋️‍♂️
    22. Your password must contain one of the following affirmations:
      • I am loved
      • I am worthy
      • I am enough
    23. Paul has hatched! Please don't forget to feed him, he eats three 🐛 every minute.
    24. Your password must include the URL of a ___ minute ___ second long YouTube video.
    25. A sacrifice must be made. Pick 2 letters that you will no longer be able to use.
    26. Your password must contain twice as many italic characters as bold.
    27. At least 30% of your password must be in the Wingdings font.
    28. Your password must include this color in hex. [a box filled with a random color]

    30. The font size of every digit must be equal to its square.
    31. Every instance of the same letter must have a different font size.
    32. Your password must include the length of your password.
    33. The length of your password must be a prime number.
    34. Uhhh let's skip this one.
    35. Your password must include the current time.
    Things I noticed
    • Most things are case insensitive! Only these are case sensitive:
      • Uppercase letters — [A-Z]
      • Roman numerals — [IVXLCDM] — actually M{0,4}(CM|CD|D?C{0,3})(XC|XL|L?X{0,3})(IX|IV|V?I{0,3})
      • Periodic table symbols
      • Chess notation
    • The moon phase can be reflected, and there are more moon emojis than you think. 🌓🌗🌛🌜 are all equivalent.
    • Not only is the country name case insensitive, it ignores spaces. So aus tra liaAustralia.
    • The Gregorian calendar is used for leap years even before 1582. Also the year 0, which is not a year at all, is considered a leap year.
    • For chess, moves need to end in + if they're checks. There are 193 possible positions.
    • The fire spreads faster if your window is wider — basically if you're on a mobile device it gets nerfed.
    • Paul eats a bug every 15 seconds, contrary to the rule text. He needs 1–8 bugs in the password when he tries to eat.
    • The YouTube challenge can be any length from 180–2179 seconds, chosen randomly and uniformly.

that sucks you didnt enjoy it. it wasnt like a fun game, but it was really interesting updating your password each time with additional rules, while keeping all previous rules.

shrugs Ain't no big deal. It's obviously not aimed at people like me. And that's okay.

I think the goal is pretty clear, to create one string that matches all the rules. The rules don't change, more get added, and it's the whole point! Obviously there's nothing that can be done and nobody can judge if it just wasn't subjectively fun to you.

GAH! After all that, my poor password up in smoke. I saved part of it (and Paul) only to make the mistake of hitting undo to try to get it back. Q_Q I'll be back Paul, I won't let you get hard boiled again!!

This is a great game, both making fun of password requirements and actual fun. I found it to be a test of internet skills like searching, geoguessing, how text fields work. If I didn't know it, I searched and found it or something that would output it.

Edit: Round 2 - Made it to 24 and took too long trying to figure out how to search by duration. Paul was not hard boiled, but I forgot to set my hourglass and he starved. Q_Q

I'm currently enjoying Pippa Pipkin's stream of this where she managed to glitch Paul into eating equals signs somehow.

Letters that belong in roman numerals are only counted as roman numerals when capitalized. Don't input TRACT, input tract. The game will accept it.
