I’ve been helping a family member learn to code. We’ve been working on remaking a website I use often that is from the early 2000s. The website gets new content regularly but hasn’t been updated since the 2000s.

We’ve remade it to be more modern and add features (like you know.. search!). When we feel good, we plan on reaching out to the owner of the site to see if they’d like our new version. I feel weird about that and I’m not sure the morals of it honestly. But, it’s been a fun and good just for the projects sake. So I don’t know, we’ll see.

It feels like people are more critical these days. Maybe streaming services have allowed movie buffs to watch more movies and now they are critics. I don’t know. I thought it was a fun movie.

I’ve been reading The Magicians by Lev Grossman and while I don’t.. not like it, it’s also not grabbing me. I find it easy to put down and not pick back up, so it is slow going.

My therapist also recommended I read The Highly Sensitive Person: How To Thrive When The World Overcomes You. So far that is also pretty good, but it hasn’t yet gotten to the “how to” part, which is what I’m particularly interested in…

Finally l also just picked up Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow because John Green recommended it in a video awhile ago. I read the first page on the way back home and very quickly found myself like 80 pages in. I wasn’t planning on starting this one until I finished The Magicians but… it’s got a hold on me,

So, so sorry about your dad. I lost my mom about 10 years ago and I know exactly what you mean about time having a way of makings things you once knew so well just slip away. I stumbled upon a video this week that my sister recorded of my dad before my mom was even diagnosed with cancer. I could hear her in the background making jokes. I had almost forgotten about her type of humor, so hearing her voice and her jokes filled me with so much emotion. I hope you have videos or audio recordings of your dad to do the same for you.

To answer your question though, I made a dumb (but relatively small) mistake at work. When I did it, I had had the thought that it was wrong but I didn’t tug on that thought long enough. The code got reviewed by several people spanning multiple teams, no one caught it until much later when a junior person caught it. For some reason my mind can’t get off of it and I’m struggling to own up to it even though it was a stupid thing. It’s a small thing, but it’s been weighing me down for a few days and won’t get off my mind. My anxiety has been high this week for some unknown reason and is likely the cause.

The thing is that some of this money was paid for up to a year ago, when he probably thought Apollo was going to be thriving for years to come. I don't know that his company itself is thriving since, as far as I know, he only has the two apps (Apollo and pixel pals). I doubt pixel pals has many paying customers (seems very niche?).

I think a $250k unexpected expense, combined with the fact that he's losing his main source of income, is probably not a simple reduction in his income but who knows. I feel bad for him having to deal with this.

I was talking to a ~15 year old about the old internet. One thing that came to mind was that there were websites with video game cheat codes and like.. 90% of them were just lies. Obviously, people still lie online, but back then with the cheat codes it was just accepted that more likely than not, the code you're trying will not work. I don't know, the whole internet just had a different feel.

Also, a lot of video games had a big head mode for.. some reason? He was having a blast asking us questions about that.

I answered a similar question a few days ago here.

Like you, I didn't study CS or programming in college and made a career shift into programming. However, I did study engineering in college and was doing engineering in my first job. I was able to automate some of my work via excel macros in my first job, which is what got me interested in programming.

I ultimately got another job that was tangentially related to the engineering I studied, but still not programming. Again, I found opportunities to write programs to automate my job.

My next job was a true programming job! My biggest recommendation is to start a blog and just start blogging what you're learning. Post on a regular schedule, start building small projects and log your progress in your blog.

    1. I don't know if things have changed, but I would recommend learning Python first. It's a good first language, but there maybe aren't a lot of places where you would be using Python. However, once you learn how to program, the language doesn't really matter (in fact, a lot of places will be fine if you know a programming language, even if you don't know the one they primarily use)
    2. There are a lot of free courses online, which are fine. The best way to learn, in my opinion, is to build your own projects. Start with something small, and again, blog the whole process.
    3. 100% its possible and common. I'm biased, but I think the best programmers are the ones with some other background.

Several years ago, I learned that cashews grow on a fruit and that you can buy cashew apple juice. So, I did that to try it.

I was trying to tell my friends about it and couldn’t come up with “cashew”. So I was trying to get my spouse to help me and I said.. “you know, the nut juice that we bought?” Andddd I’ve not lived it down.
