This was a good recommendation because it read similar to fiction, which honestly made some of the stories even more… maybe a mix of surprising and weighty? That whole truth is stranger than fiction really landed in a lot of this.

Whatever this genre is was new to me. I’m not into true crime or historical fiction or biography/history, which all felt semi-present, but this was fascinating. I learned a ton and hit Wikipedia a few times for pictures and extra bits of biographical info.

As always (new for y’all), I would time travel forward, not backward. The past always sounds terrible. People just put whatever into everything - it’s amazing more people didn’t die!

I can see what you’re saying, but it felt like she was just being precise to me. Hard for me to really judge, though, because I listen to everything at 2x and all voices sound weird.

That explains sooo many of the Cybertrucks I've seen. I wondered why so many had wrap jobs or business ads on them.

Oh good, the audiobook is on Hoopla. I’ll get to it after Moby Dick (I’m halfway through the audiobook, never made it past chapter 3 reading).

Anecdotally, I’d say it’s cultural. I’m from and in Texas, and we just don’t ever expect pedestrians. There’s probably also a latent racism/classism about how people just have cars (which actually means trucks and SUVs) and “poor” people don’t have those (they need to “pull themseleves up by their bootstraps” and get a car, and other trash).

We lived in Philadelphia for a year, and it was almost culture shock at how easy it was to walk, how the drivers just waited for you, how people just walked out into the street with full belief that cars would stop for them. I rode the bus that year because it was waaaay more convenient, and I learned to be so much more “aggressive” a pedestrian.

Since much of the south US is built for cars and not people vs old cities/regions that had to adapt to cars, I imagine that’s a huge part of it.

Pray for us - the Christian University I work at is finally going to bend to student (and some loud external) pressure to add a TurningPointUSA chapter. Most of the faculty and a good chunk of the staff are less than thrilled.

I’m with you on the feel of a theme. I think I was about halfway through Understand when I realized I’d need to make room in my top 5 books for this collection. The way Chiang wove through philosophy and religion and played with perception and the limit of humanity from so many angles was engrossing. Just a master class in clever and concise storytelling.

I read this on his Wikipedia page: Writer Peter Watts has praised Chiang's work, writing: "We share a secret prayer, we writers of short SF. We utter it whenever one of our stories is about to appear in public, and it goes like this: Please, Lord. Please, if it be Thy will, don’t let Ted Chiang publish a story this year."

I couldn’t resist, but I actually would be fine with all of that. Disney should just do a Muppets version of Star Wars while they’re at it.
