Right, but parent made the statement that Chinese consumers having an Apple product is better for the rest (non-Chinese) users.

Reminds me of the episode of The Office where Pam just assumed the position of Office Administrator. No one stood up to her about it and the one person that did didn't have the spine to stand up to her when pushed and so she just became the Office admin, a nonexistent position until that point. (China being Pam in this case)

The difference of course being this isn't a sitcom, and Taiwan is benefited by both not being officially recognized (because China doesn't blow them out of the water as long as everyone plays along), and they are benefited by not being China, because they have freedoms and economic success which isn't built on cheap labor and shell games.

My roommate through all of college, and one of my dearest friends, is a Taiwanese citizen. I have a special place in my heart for him and his nation's dilemma.

I think this is a fair idea. Maybe even allow merging of same-topic, different sources. Then the merged thread would have OPs. Probably would want it to be limited to only merging of links and not posts, even if they are on the same topic. May want to encourage the not first poster to manually merge a la posting their OP as a comment.

Makes me wonder exactly how they would know you were the press unless you skipped along with a press badge. Which makes me wonder why not just not announce your press status? I have no qualms with lying when faced with a situation like this, I'd view it as a rather just means of protest.

Two decades should be long enough. The purpose of a copyright is to allow the creator enough time to profit off of their creation before it falls into the public domain and is free for all. No copyright doesn't make sense as it encourages people who not create/share. But these long term copyrights make no sense either because they stifle copying, which is a good and natural thing and enables further creation and improvement --for all parties.

The creator is encouraged to continue creating. The consumer is encouraged to create and improve on the initial creations, and is incentivized by being allowed to make money off of their own work.

I think a cap of 20 years is a good balance. It allows you a very solid period of time in which to profit off of a creation, enjoy --perhaps-- a period of time in which to rest upon your laurels and then encourages further creation while that content is still somewhat relevant.

Used to lift three times a week, following the StrongLifts 5x5 protocol. I also ran a few miles and biked approx. 200mi a week.

I don't have Twitter, Reddit, Facebook, cable TV, newspaper, or anything. I get my news through word of mouth, a slack group I am in made up of some friends, a 30 min podcast I try to listen to each morning, the random comment on radio, and at the moment here on tildes and over on mastadon (I am experimenting with alt-social media sources). And I don't go searching for stuff. This worked for people for most of history. I do not need to know what's happening everywhere in the world to be [happy|fulfilled|useful]. In fact, I am all of those things with less news. I have little at best ability to change what I see/hear in the news, so digesting it as it comes in is pointless. Me finding out about a headline a week or a month later or even never, changes the outcome of the headline by 0%.

It's great, mostly. People look at you weird when you have no idea about the newest headline. For example, something happened in New Zealand, a shooting of some sort, and I only heard about it because I read a headline on here about a guy who invented 8chan and how he felt responsible for whatever it was that happened. You might think it is awful that I have no idea about this event, but my knowledge of the event changes nothing except my ability to experience joy, so it has no concern about anyone but me.

Yeah, all these new services are sketch, tbh. I am not a fan of them and while I haven't used them I'd make sure to only tip in cash because you just can't trust these digital marketplaces. I think one or two services like this have been caught skimming off tips or not giving out any of the tip.

Does switching user-agent to googlebot still work? That's how I used to do it (usually via curl -L when possible). Now I usually just avoid paywall sites. Most content on them can be found elsewhere.

Thanks for the sources, I will add these to my reading list! This is what I suspected. I know that in Western news white nationalist groups get a lot of press, but my understanding is Western white nationalist groups are pretty tame compared to what a lot of the non-western world experiences. White nationalists, by and large, are just a bunch of hate filled, but otherwise spineless, individuals.

Abolish the service level wage and make every employer pay their employees the state minimum wage or better. Sorry the employers are too lazy/greedy to pay proper wages, and I am sorry the states are empowering the employers to pay less than minimum. Won't make much a difference for the consumer since we are expected to pay anyways and the state will see more in taxes since probably more than 50% of tips aren't taxes because they aren't claimed. If I were tipped (never been tipped in my life, purely hypothetical) I would never claim a cash tip as income come tax time. Sorry, just wouldn't do it. #taxationistheft
