I'm new to this problem so hopefully someone else has insight, but I believe there are at least two options here.

    1. GoreTex and it's clones are appealing because you can create a "breathable" raincoat. You have regular woven fabric with a special coating that repels liquid water but won't impede airborne humidity, so your sweat can evaporate. Something like a plastic poncho or windbreaker isn't breathable, so doesn't require GoreTex.
    2. These chemicals are being banned in many places, so companies are finding new solutions. I think you still need to go to high-end brands, but many are now advertising "PFAS/PFOA Free" on some products. At this point, I wouldn't trust anything without that explicit marker.

As nukeman points out in another comment, GoreTex probably isn't the first thing we should banish from our lives. It may turn out to be low-risk. My gear needs replacing anyways, so it's easy for me to do this.

Thanks for this clarification! I hadn't realized. As I understand it, this solves the "eating a big chunk of Teflon" problem because it won't break down in our bodies, but I'm less clear about these two aspects:

    1. Can we manufacture PTFEs without exposing workers and the environment to less stable fluoropolymers? I believe PFOA has a dark history here.
    2. On a scale of years, I assume that my GoreTex clothing will shed "big" fragments around my home. And presumably those fragments will break into smaller bits over time. I know they need to be really small to get into my bloodstream, but it still seems prudent to banish the material entirely.

A tangential tidbit that I recently learned: GoreTex - the popular waterproofing material for shoes and outdoor gear - is made almost entirely of forever chemicals (PFAS and friends). We still don't know how dangerous it is to wear GoreTex clothing. It may be relatively safe when compared to eating food prepared with PFAS, but I've gotten rid of all my PFAS-based waterproof clothing. PFAS is not safe in ANY quantity, and I don't want to wait for the research to be conclusive.

Very excited about Plague Tale. I recently played the first game and loved the approach to storytelling. It's not high art or life changing, but it's a fun little light-horror story with compelling characters and great production quality. The gameplay is definitely repetitive, but the stealth mechanics are good-enough to make the story enjoyable.

I'm not an expert on the technical details and you may already be aware, but the Heroic Launcher has ever-improving support for GOG and I've had pretty good experiences with Proton there. Like with Steam, you can install custom versions of Wine/Proton GE, and most of the time It Just WorksTM.

Heroic also has a "add games to Steam by default" feature, but that gives me headaches about a quarter of the time.

WOW is this an incredible show. The attention to silly detail has overwhelmed my brain and I'm obsessed. I've already watched the first three series...I can't stop.

Thanks for sharing! Nice to start the year laughing :)

I'd love to know what the demographic data says for this, because I'm the same. Dune is the only movie I've cared about in at least a decade, I never go to theaters, and I'm already planning my trips to the faraway fancy theaters to see Dune II multiple times in IMAX Dolby whatever. Did they know they were making these movies for me, or is it a happy accident?

I feel similarly, and I'm realizing that my biggest hope for this announcement is that internet discussions about Jeopardy! improve. For the most part I think that the fandom has shown themselves to be not-awful, but I'm tired of having to separate good faith criticisms from misogyny and weird gatekeeping about what a host/nerd/Trebek successor "should" be.

I'd be curious to hear the perspectives of those who strongly prefer Mayim, and what they're feeling. Ken's style works really well for me, but I'm sure it doesn't for everyone and I hope the Jeopardy! community can continue to grow more inclusive.

This is a complicated ending, but I'm glad we're finally here. SO excited for Masters.

It's silly and barely a custom, but I love grocery store parking lots on Christmas Eve. There's something about taking a moment to step out of my own chaos while watching everyone else's that makes me understand humanity a little bit better. The energy is so different from any other busy time of year.

This year I purposely let myself be a bit of a hedonist. I bought myself some expensive toys that I previously wouldn't have allowed myself to buy. It was fun, but it definitely wasn't worth it. I'm glad I tried this with intentionality rather than suppressed guilt, and I'm relieved to have learned that hedonism isn't my path. This will make for a happier 2024...after I sell these silly things ;)

I love cheese, and when I went full-time vegan (after a prolonged mostly-vegan period) I was worried I would struggle. But, hilariously, I completely forgot what cheese tastes like within two weeks. My brain just couldn't store that data, for whatever reason. So convenient!

So I can't tell you whether vegan cheese tastes like animal cheese, but I can definitely say that vegan cheese is delicious as its own thing. There's been a ton of innovation over the last decade, and it's awesome. Daiya brand frozen pizza is my favourite pizza, if you want to try something available at many grocery stores.
