I have been forbidden from chewing since July 20. But in two days I can eat normally again! What should my first meal be!?
I had triple jaw surgery 6 months ago, but things went wrong around a wisdom tooth and one of the implants, so I had a revision last month. As a consequence of that, I have not been allowed to chew since my jawbone needed peace and quiet to grow back together.
The suffering is soon over, though. On August 17 I can eat normally again! I have had multiple dreams of eating and chewing things normally, and I have even had unquiet dreams/nightmares of eating but then remembering that I'm not allowed to eat.
For reference, I have eaten nothing but mashed potatoes, soups, overcooked pasta, yoghurts... for the past month. Last time around, my first solid meal was a cheeseburger from McDonald's but that was definitely not very satisfying. So please help! What should my first real meal in a month be!?
PS: my frustration is expertly expressed in this moment in this video. I WANNA CHEW!
Risotto? But that might be in the category of the previous several months, but the mouthfeel of a good risotto is so nice.
What comes to mind first:
That’s all I got…
Tacos and Streak, in that order.
Tacos for the crunch, steak for the chewy goodness. That's my vote here
Eat a taco... go streaking. This is a life plan I can agree with.
I'm even going to edit that, it's perfect.
I would second the crunch. You don't want anything chewy as you'll tire out pretty quickly on it. Soft crunch like a chip sounds like the best warm up for the mastication to come. Pleasant sound and feel, but over quickly.
Yeah, my jaw muscles are completely out of shape - last time, I got so sore the first week or two because I hadn't used those muscles for so long. I might need to sort of warm up 😅
I think these two are gonna be the ones. I have really craved fat, savory food like burgers!
And I think I'm gonna go buy a bag of candy to stare at until tomorrow. But ya, no more jawbreaking please and thank you 😆
Off topic, but what's the difference between a diner vs. pub burger? (I did try a quick search to find an answer)
I think diner style is more of a “smash” burger, where the patty is pressed against the griddle, a thinner result with more crispy bits that cooks quickly. Think 5 Guys and Shake Shack if you haven’t been to many traditional American diners. Pub style would be your “restaurant” burger, thick and juicy but taking longer to prepare.
Ahhh, thanks!
Something deep fried. Calamari or fried chicken or tempura vegetables.
fruit salad. Raw vegetable plate with your favorite dip. Corn on the cob.
your favorite kind of raw or roasted nuts.
Debby downer here but I have allergies to most fruits, vegetables, and nuts.. But yeah, definitely getting something deep fried!
Sorry to hear that. I would find it hard to live with those allergies. But, on the other hand, I have a medical issue that many would consider horrifying and I live with it tolerably well. We cope with what we must. Enjoy chewing again!
Thank you. I take supplements but I wouldn't say it's hard to live with. You get used to it. It's just super annoying not to be able to grab an apple or carrot as a snack, and unable to eat parts of meals at restaurants, or if I'm over for dinner at somebody's place.
Can I ask what your medical issue is?
messaging you.

That's what was my choice last time, but yeah it's too cheap and shitty food so this time I'm gonna treat myself!
Looks pretty good from the pictures I can find but the only one of those around here is probably coleslaw lol
I had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled last week so I'm definitely going to be watching this thread while I finish my recovery! I can't wait to eat real food again, although mashed potatoes are getting me through.
Mashed potatoes and yoghurts got me a long way too. Let me know if you want ideas for other soft foods while you are still recovering.
It's 2 weeks of this diet with wisdom teeth, right?
All they could tell me is "everyone is different", so I guess I'll just see when it feels right to eat again.
First thing I ate once I could “chew” was hamburger helper 😂
I had 4 impacted removed and the “chew” window is very short before you can just eat whatever again compared to the initial “no chewing” window. It’s stuff getting stuck in the cavity that’s more limiting than anything.
I vote sushi as a first meal!! Soft enough to eat without opening your mouth wide but lots of flavor, plus you can get lots of different kinds to play with textures.
Congrats on your improving health and endurance!
To show off your new jaw... corn on the cob?
Otherwise, and it's less relevant to your inquiry and more relevant to my current desire, a toasted loaf bread tomato sandwich with crispy bacon and cheddar cheese, with a copious amount of mayonaise.
Ouch. While OP is greenlit to chew, from experience with jaw problems, starting off with a full wide mouth bite isn't a fun choice. The jaw muscles are likely all seized up, and need to be stretched back to full open over time.
Very true! I can't open my mouth very much. I can only get a gap between the teeth of about 2 centimeters (~1 inch) at the moment. Have to do jaw exercises to get back to normal
For me there would only be one answer, and it would be a prime rib dinner with eeeeeverything.
S'mores!!!
After suffering with it for decades I came to an understanding that problems I thought were in my back, shoulders or neck were really in my jaw.

I went through a few months of eating soups where I just threw random foods into a pot and shredded them with an immersion blender. I've been wearing a bite guard at night as recommended by my dentist. I was on an extreme diet for a few months but two years later my problem is a lot better, sometimes I have a bad day but right now I struggle to remember when my last bad day was, maybe it was three weeks ago.
I know that was a typo (I hope!), but I'm still chuckling, wondering what foots exactly you've shredded lately!
Corrected.
