But even if I weren't a fan, it's a bit sad to see the end of an era. Who knows, maybe next year they will decide this was a bad decision.

Surely if this year didn’t get enough interest to put on a show, next year won’t be any different.

Yeah, it's not coming back any time soon. Any mention of that is just wishful thinking. If anything, give it ten - fifteen years and then maybe they'll be able to generate enough fan and industry interest to do a "throwback" E3 event to capitalize on nostalgia.

I enjoyed watching the E3 presentations while chatting with my friends. It was the closest thing we had to an industry/audience event like the Oscars, but for games. For us, it was fun and exciting. For the companies, it must have been nerve wracking, being exposed in that way to an unpredictable audience that could either acclaim or ridicule them. I can see why they prefer having total control of how they present themselves to the public.

I miss getting excited for trailers and whatnot but all the nostalgia threads just list the cringiest moments and really, that’s what it was. A business presentation by people who are way too nerdy to feel comfortable on stage. Games probably will never get the big shows as movies and music do because it’s not about showmanship at all. Probably not the worst fate for a medium. We kinda have that in common with… books.

I don't think that's really the case, it's more that E3 has mismanaged their industry relations. Geoff Keighley is doing big shows, one of which is literally at the same time E3 would have been, with the same publishers attending, and the only real difference can be that Keighley has convinced them that it's worth their while.

Video games are too huge and too mainstream for something like "being too nerdy" to matter. When the video game industry dwarfs the movie industry several times over, the companies can, and do, afford charismatic people to be figureheads.

So this Geoff Keighley dude has an event that is essentially the same as E3 was? If so, how can I watch it?

Yes, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summer_Game_Fest According to Wikipedia it will be on June 8th, 2023 this year. IIRC it's on the usual places, Twitch, Youtube, etc.

When I was younger, E3 was a bucket list event for me... in theory. Once the gaming industry started getting more coverage over the past decade or so and I could actually see what goes on, I realized the concentration of corny/awkward people per square foot would be way too high for my tolerance. Seeing indie passion projects and their devs would be great but all the AAA stuff reeks of tryhard.
