Wait, doesn't a DualSense controller cost $70? So isn't this more like the cost of three controllers?

I managed to get a Steam Link box before Valve discontinued them, and it's great for streaming games. You can even use it to stream other stuff on your PC if you minimize Big Picture mode.

The screen size and Dualsense features do sweeten the deal, but with one of the many Android cloud device options (yes, including ones more expensive than this, such as the G Cloud or Ayn Odin, that have smaller screens and no adaptive triggers or haptic rumble) you get so much more value for your money thanks to Xbox Game Pass and Retroarch and native Android games.

No, I won't. But everyone already has one so your point is moot at best.

Something tells me you're not going to find an 8" phone with 1080p resolution for $100, either.

can't you already remote play ps5 on your phone and just get a phone clip for an already existing DualSense controller? feels like it'd be about the same, maybe even a bit more comfortable. At the very least a phone clip is probably like 10x cheaper and you'll already have all the components for everything else.

It comes down to screen quality and technical performance for me. a new controller + phone clip is $100, so if Playstation can justify the extra $100 for that screen and connectivity, it's worth considering.

Your argument is similarly narrow and reductionist. With a cheapo phone mount, an OTG USB cable, and the $6 PSPlay app , you can use a DualSense controller with your phone and play games remotely. Since you'd have a PS5 already, you don't need to buy another controller. Total cost is likely less than $30.

Alternatively, if you already own a device like a Steam Deck, ASUS Rog Ally, or the like ... there's plenty of apps you can download to use that device (chiaki4deck, for example).

It's not to say there's no use case for Sony's offering - if you want a way to play your PS5 at home or remotely, without relying on your phone or dropping money on a more-expensive device, then this would fit the bill. But it seems like an ultimately inferior product on almost every level, simply because all it does is stream. There's no local storage, and from what others are saying it doesn't even fully support Sony's offerings (e.g. PSPlus Cloud).

I've come around on this after thinking about it some more. Dualsense's are almost $100 to begin with, so another $100 for margin + some SoC + a 1080p screen + a battery isn't terrible value. I don't think this is a great product for tinkerer's, you could even buy a Switch lite for $50 more and install CFW so you can use PS5 remote play on it, but as so often on internet forums, it's best to remember that most people aren't tinkerers.

This is going to be a solid, well made device. You buy it, and it does one job well. No messing about. You don't need to think about compatibility, what app to install, whether or not the controller works properly on the app, and so forth.

As to phones, the thing is, people like to use their phones while gaming as well.

First party controllers are vastly overpriced for what they offer. The dual sense has their haptic triggers that I haven’t seen on any third party controller, but when you have controllers like 8bitdo’s SN30 pro that does pretty much everything except that for $30-50 and still makes them a profit, it makes you wonder if those extra features are worth the $30-60 you would pay for Sony’s or Microsoft’s offerings.

Granted I don’t think that this device is particularly overpriced for the hardware (good quality screens are expensive) insomuch as I think it has limited utility.

Or you can get an Retroid Pocket 3+ for $150, that can also do every game streaming platform. It doesn't have the Dualsense adaptive triggers, but otherwise it's close enough. AND you can emulate consoles up to about PS2 level on it.

I bought a Logitech G Cloud strictly for cloud gaming, which supports remote play on Playstation, Xbox, Steam or Moonlight running on a PC, as well as cloud gaming like Game Pass, GeForce Now, Stadia when that was a thing, whatever Amazon's thing is called, etc.

People kind of bashed that when it came out because it cost almost as much as a Steam Deck but has far inferior performing hardware, but I love it. I had all these consoles (last-gen Xbox One, PS4) and a PC capable of gaming, but all I ever really played was my Switch because it's so much more convenient. Now I can also play all those other things just as conveniently in an arguably way more comfortable form factor than the Switch. You can even stream Switch games on it if you've got a powerful enough computer and are willing to wade the grey waters of emulation, and it runs Android so you've got the full library of native Android games available as well (in all its micro-transaction IAP glory) and it can natively emulate up to at least N64 and PSX/PSP at full speed using Retroarch or any of the other standalone emulators on the Play Store.

Even with the G Cloud priced at $100 more (sometimes going on sale for less), I can't fathom why anyone would consider this Sony thing over that unless they are die hard Playstation bros who steadfastly shun all other consoles and PCs on principle and so wouldn't need anything more flexible.

You get remote play, but also the other content like you said, so it's hard to recommend this PS device unless you really, really like the Dualsense and big screens more than game variety.

I see the use case because we have 1 tv at home, my partner is usually on it and I don't want to bore her with my games anyway. Currently I use a Nintendo Switch to stream games from my headless gaming pc. Works like a charm. We both can be on the couch, I'm half watching and playing games, she's playing games and shopping on her phone. Many couples are like this, or if a parent wants to play a game while the kid does something else. Or if you want to be in bed or in another room.

The market is there. Streaming from the ps4/5 is also something that's been available for a while now. You can stream to windows, to Linux and android. The Nintendo Switch being what it is, I could stream the ps5 to it as well.

All they've done is provide an in house solution that doesn't require fiddling with settings or being tech savvy or jailbreaking a switch. Someone can just buy this, pick it up and go.

But, it is overpriced for what it is and it won't let you leave the house unlike the other solutions out there. I can take my laptop or Nintendo switch and stream to it no matter where I am via VPN. I can also use whatever controller I want.

200 for a couple doesn't seem ridiculous. It just seems like a tech friendly solution to a modern couch potato couple.

In principal, I assume Sony could've added a PSP/PSX emulator to this remote play device, which would've nicely complemented its PS Plus Premium service.

Probably me. I don't buy new phones that often and my current one has a pretty small screen. When I do get a new one, it'll be whatever is under $350 I find off Amazon in another year or two. I've tried running PS Remote Play on my current phone, but it's just not a good experience. I also hate every third party controller addon for a phone that I've tried. Right now I'm using an 8BitDo clip thing for my XBox One controller, but it's the best of the bad options I've had the displeasure of using.

Even ignoring all that, this will let me use my TV and do random grinding stuff in FFXIV at the same time on my couch in a better format. That's worth $200 for me.

For 350 you should definitely be able to get a phone capable of running PS remote with no issue. Off the top of my head I can think of the pixel 6a, and in 2 or 3 years probably this year's 7a.

I guess I don't share the same displeasure with mobile controllers (love my razer kishi) but I can see it's not for everyone. Still, investing 200 dollars on such a niche product that only lets you play PS games inside your house is what feels like throwing money down the drain for me when you could use it for a better phone, or better yet, a more versatile device (steam deck, ayn, ROG, etc.) that lets you play those same games anywhere and a bunch of other things.

Even ignoring all that, this will let me use my TV and do random grinding stuff in FFXIV at the same time on my couch in a better format.

Fair. I literally never watch TV so this didn't cross my mind. This is the only argument I get, if you only have 1 TV, and especially if you have more people in the house, it's convenient to have a way to take your PS5 gaming with you somewhere else.

However I still think you're better off investing in a more capable device rather than one that literally only does this one single thing. That's the part my wallet can't get over.

There's no way I'd ever want a phone that big, but I definitely want a bigger one for games. I could just get a Steam Deck, it'd do everything I want too. But, it's more expensive and my primary game library's on PlayStation anyway.

However, if I'm being honest, it's also just going to be a collector thing. I own every PlayStation console/handheld and it'll bug me forever not to have this for the complete collection.

Honestly, this seems like a pretty good value for a standalone device with a bigger screen, DualSense controller.

I see it being more popular with my nephews than me at this point. A lot easier for them to ask for this than a phone or iPad.
