I've found that a lot of mods for Minecraft give me the feeling that high level university classes do: they assume that it's the only class/mod you're in/using, so they go all the way in terms of complexity. VS takes a lot of ideas from MC mods, buts tones them down just enough to make them feel accessible without sacrificing tough decisions. I especially like their approach to worldgen, taking inspiration from Dwarf Fortress, where biomes are based on the shape of the world rather than presets.

On top of that, the engine the game is built on is a lot more stable and smooth than MC, with excellent built in mod support and a lot of those fancy shader effects already there (if one wants them).

I feel like it still has a way to go to feel "complete" -- if you're a "Kill the Ender Dragon" kind of MC player it won't satisfy there yet (though it does have some excellent monster design!), but if you want to build, farm, design (the building design options are incredible!), I think VS far surpasses MC, and if you've never played or enjoyed MC I think VS does a lot of cool stuff that makes it worth checking out.

From what I've seen the progression curve seems to be rewarding and I like idea of all my things being something I worked hard to acquire.

Can't wait to get my hands on the game!

I recently stumbled across Vintage Story and feel like the game looks fascinating and up my alley. Being a Dad with young kids and currently no job my gaming budget is nonexistent and I would likely wait until Christmas to get a copy for myself.

I was curious if anyone plays this game and what your thoughts/opinions are.

If you're looking for something like vintage Minecraft on a budget, you might like Minetest. It's sort of a framework for voxel games and you can have it be a Minecraft clone or something that looks similar but plays completely different. It's completely free and open source and runs well even on old hardware.

(Vintage Story looks cool, too, but you could download Minetest today.)

Thank you for the recommendation! I remember seeing that a long while ago and didn't know it was still around. I'll bookmark that and see if I can find some time to play around with it.

Lol! I can appreciate that. It looks like a lot of fun, I'm going to see if I can get my kids interested.

No marketplace. No loot boxes. No microtransactions. No Season pass. No paid DLC. No hidden fees. No pay2win. No ads. No user data monetization. No software patents. No shareholders. No publisher. No NFTs. No BlockChain. No 3rd party interests. No Games-as-a-Service. No empty promises.

I feel like gaming with them will be a fun time as doing that with my Dad are some of the few good memories I have with him.

Thanks for spreading the word, I had never heard of this until this post and now I'm probably going to go get obsessed!

I haven't played it but I've just had a look at it, it seems really interesting! The crafting system sounds really cool, it gives me the same vibes I got from Minecraft when I first saw it back in mid-2010, that mystery and wonder.

Definitely tempted to grab it, will keep an eye on whether anyone here has played it and what their thoughts are first.

I had a similar feeling when I saw it! I think I was recommended a video about this since I had been looking at some Golden Age Minecraft videos. I stopped playing a while ago after I found the newer versions of Minecraft were adding things that just didn't click for me and I enjoyed the older mechanics better. My brother took his account back to play with his kids now that they're old enough so I'd need to buy a new copy if I want to play it and try out those old versions again.

I agree with the sense of wonder and have been trying not to watch any actual lets plays of it so I'll come into the game somewhat fresh if I do eventually pick up a copy.

The sheer effort to reach and eventual feeling of accomplishment felt after reatching it was unlike anything Id ever felt on MC.

If you like the idea of a voxel game but you want a more grown up survival experience, VS is a hard recommendation from me.

If I really just wanted to zone out and had limited time I got into chiselling and tbh that mechanic could be a timesink all on its own

I liked that little touch! It makes the generic whacks at animals seem so much less personal in Minecraft

I do--I absolutely love the level of detail in the game and all the steps required to do certain things. I even enjoy using a scythe to cut down, grab, and bale up a bunch of grass for my animals. The smelting stuff is super fun, too. This is the kind of stuff I've always wanted in games: I want every aspect of a game to be its own fun little thing to do. It's especially interesting since you can automate some of it later, but it starts off as needing to do things fairly realistically.

Unfortunately, I've never been a huge fan of the Minecraft-style voxel landscapes, building, and character movement. Moving my character just feels clunky. Jumping up the steps of a mountain is awkward, and nothing but strafing around and doing one action with a weapon is a bit too simple for me.

Even so, I'm excited to check out some of the updates when my friends decide it's time to go back to it. I just wish this level of crafting detail was in a game like Valheim, where I enjoy the combat and building a lot better. Add in Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom-style character control (climbing mountains, paragliding, really precise character movement, etc.), and there would be a game I'd never stop playing.

Your extras do sound like the ideal game! I did see in a review video that the devs only consider the game 10% complete so I'm very curious what will be added down the road.

I love that description. I know there's Minecraft mods that go that route but since I don't have MC now and this is cheaper I'd rather support these indie devs when I can afford it

I am currently taking a break from it but I love it! It's still in early access and in some ways it shows, but like another poster said - it's a grown up version of Minecraft, and it's beautifully made. And they work really well with modders so it's easy to mod the game however you like.

If you're in the mood for just pure resource gathering in a survival game, I don't think this is the game because tools (like pickaxes) can be precious and storage more limited.

I love the music. I'm usually the type to turn music off but I don't for this game because I feel like it integrates really well with gameplay.

Does vintage story have a huge learning curve? I'm thinking of buying this game after my finals but I'm not quite sure if I should do so, thinking it might end up in my back catalogue of PC games. Does it run well? My linux PC has a 710 which is on the low-end side but I'll probably play it on my main gaming PC.

To add to the other reply here. I started playing yesterday and (so far we only have got as far as bronze) you could get by using the ingame handbook but it's one of those games that I think expects you to play it with a wiki open on a second monitor to look stuff up because the little handbook can be pretty cramped and sometimes it's useful to see images or videos of the process you're trying to achieve.

Just picked it up and played it all evening yesterday. It runs well (and has a native linux version which is always a plus). There is a pretty big learning curve but it's more of a "knowing what to do and what your options/best choices are" than a more skill-heavy game. There's a lot of customization in the difficulty settings to make it less punishing as well, and there's an in-game handbook that has guides to the major systems and can be searched for crafting recipes.

I believe I've heard of the game before this thread, but wound up buying it. It's pretty great, feels like if Minecraft was designed as a survival-oriented game with a full building system and more fine-grained voxels. I like how you craft items with knapping for stone tools, even.

Strangely, it actually pushed me back to Minecraft 1.7.3b which I'm running via Prism launcher, but I'm planning on switching back and forth.
