At least the content is backed up, but the site was a central hub to host rebalance, accessibility, and translation for games. I'm of the belief that these projects keep these games alive far better than anyone, including the original creators, so I'm praying something better emerges from the rubble. This is bumming me the hell out.

Agreed, its a real bummer. Especially reading through the post, hearing that he had a group of bad actors dox and attempt to ruin his life is so disheartening. I wish we had a better middle ground between impossible to find and fully known to the greater net, so we could still have accessible small sites like this without a group of stinkers coming in to ruin it for everyone. The net isnt built for that anymore, but we can dream. If anyone has any recommendations for alternative hosts of this type of content, id love to hear some. I find that with the rise of making discord, too many if these projects are isolated until they blow up or get taken down.

The net was like this in the past too. usenet and irc were full of assholes and doxxers.

So uh, FWIW here's a very different take I just saw in response. Also that reddit thread in the replies about other communities is... Something.

Yeowch, my gut reflex was to wonder if datacrystal might be capable and willing of taking on the hosting duties. So of course it was already tried.... Sad news all the way around.

I have had a long hiatus on my plans to learn Japanese. This sounds like the perfect opportunity to pick back up again.

Learning Japanese is a fun long journey. It's definitely worth it!

Sad news. Nice that the full archive is available on archive.org and available to the public.

EDIT: Looks like each hack has a readme with it that explains what it is, if it's not obvious from the filename. Nice. This is probably true for much of the files in the archive. Okay, not so bad. Not as nice as browsing via a web UI of course

At least the archive is a reasonable size for others to archive in addition to archive.org (like 12GB) so there will be plenty of copies of it out in the world, in case someone wants to take on the task of doing a new site or something at some point.

For the record, here is the link to the news post on the site discussing this, as it has moved off the front page: https://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=39405
