Games you're excited about?

Anything from the newly introduced games at E3 to older games that you're rediscovering.

I personally have come back to Kerbal Space Program after several years of it sitting in my Steam library. I used to try to go too quickly through the career mode, but now that I've slowed down I have the chance to actually learn how orbits and transfers work! It's so satisfying to design something with just enough fuel to get there and back again, and achieve MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY.

KSP is one of my favorite jams, but I've never made it past the Mun. I ought to pick that up again sometime.
My new fix is Factorio. I'm not really sure where my weekend went, but one thing I know for certain is that I need more iron gear wheels.

Honestly I've been disappointed in the way AAA-games have been handled in recent years, so I stopped buying them altogether. CDProjekt Red is one of the only developers/publishers that seem to care more about user experience than profit maximization. So definitely excited for their release, even though lengthy, involved RPGs are not my favorite kind of game.

That trailer looked like everything in it should be a videogame cliché, but somehow... none of it is. It's like a treasure trove of perfect shit for an open world videogame RPG, that simply never has been tried before. Maybe due to technical limitations, maybe due to no one having picked it up, I have no idea. I mean, yea, I love Deus Ex and System Shock and all that, but this is on another level. It's the freshest take on a classic, big budget RPG setting I have seen since maybe... ever?

I think 343i kind of dropped the ball with Halo 5 (though it did have its moments), so I'm hoping they make up for it with this next game; from the trailer, it definitely looks like a step up.

I was super hyped when I saw the Elder Scrolls 6 announcement, mainly just because now it's actually been confirmed that they are working on it. I don't expect it to be released until at least 2020 though, but I'm okay with that. I just wanted news that they do have plans on moving on from porting Skyrim. Also, Skyrim on Alexa is amusing, to say the least.

I'm extremely happy to see Star Control: Origins. In my opinion star control 2 was one of the greatest games ever made. There were a ton of aliens and planets to explore. There was a galactic threat. You had to successfully negotiate with alien races with vastly different philosophies and cultures in order to get them to join your fight and lend you their ships or tech.

For anyone who hasn't played star control 2 there is a free HD fan remake called Ur-Quan Masters available here: http://sc2.sourceforge.net
I highly suggest you check it out if you can get past the old school graphics.

The first computer that I could really call "mine" was an old tower that my dad taught me how to install Linux onto, and I spent quite a lot of time tracking down open source and freeware games that I could play on it. UQM was among the handful I spent many, many, many hours on and it still informs what I look for in games today.

The way the world moved forwards on a clock and factions just moved around pursuing their own objectives regardless of whatever silly sidequest or farming I was doing was so shocking and exciting when I first realized what had happened. The fact that Origins apparently works the same way has me very excited, and they showed pretty much all of the gameplay touchstones that I remember and loved.

I can't wait to have more *parties* with *happy campers* and find people who won't always be *jumping in front*.

      Edit for reminiscing about SPOILERS:

The moment when I opened up my map and saw one of my allied territories simply gone, and the growing dread as I finally went over and encountered the Korh-Ah, seeing their fleet roll across the map, is still one of my favorite gaming memories.

No other game has managed to catch me off guard in quite that way, or have a world that felt both so alive and so narratively involved and independent of my own actions. In other games the story always happens in your own time, waiting around for you to finish whatever sidequests or grinding you want; in SC the story is happening whether or not you show up, and if you want things to go your way, you'd better haul ass and get to work because the baddies aren't going to wait around and fight on your terms.

*jumping peppers!* this is *smiling times!*

It's nice to see someone who'll wait before they buy games because of the whole preorder fiasco we're in now.

I think Factorio can seem like a grind at first before you get used to the "automate everything" mindset you need to really play the game. You aren't really meant to be crafting a ton of stuff manually, the game is all about setting up production lines and solving logistics problems (how do i move all of these resources from this area over to this other area). I've always felt it was kind of a mix between minecraft's make-your-own-fun gameplay and the free-form puzzle solving of a zachtronics game.

This E3 seemed to be mostly games that were announced/teased last E3 just with more gameplay or an extended trailer, which I'm always for getting more gameplay but was kind of disappointing in a way.

Anyhow, I'm excited for a couple of new things that they showed. Sea of Solitude looked very interesting, almost Rime'esque visually. I'm very curious about what Babylon's Fall is going to end up being. But whatever it is I'm sure Platinum are not going to disappoint. Transference, the game with Elijah Wood looked very psychological horror and I love that kinda thing. On a similar note, a new Remedy game called Control that Sony showed yesterday, looked promising. If it's Alan Wake's crazy premise and plot combined with above tolerable gameplay I'd be all in. Ghost of Tsushima looked good, but I'm also hype for the new From x Activision title, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. It's going to be interesting to see what From can do in a bit of a different setting where the gameplay doesn't necessarily complement the world building like in Dark Souls. I'm also a fan of the DMC reboot so Devil May Cry V seems like something I'd play.

Ooblets was something that was shown last year as well I believe but that game looks adorable. From other previously announced titles it's probably The Last of Us 2 and Death Stranding that grabbed my interest but kinda need to know more about them then what we've seen from the trailers.

I don't really watch any of the conferences, but I did watch a couple of the links you posted and it seems like Triple A games are become more diverse in their artistic scope. The Last of Us 2 is the only game that I recognize by name, and it seems like it's being true to the original game. You're right about the trailers though, more info is always better.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice could be really good. I wasn't a Dark Souls fan until Dark Souls 3, but I really enjoyed that game.

I like the way Babylon's Fall looked, even if it was seemingly absent of gameplay. I love most of what Platinum Games makes.

Microsoft buying Compulsion Games has made me more interested in We Happy Few. Seeing the early access gameplay really put me off from that game, but Microsoft didn't buy that studio for a mediocre survival game. The Giant Bomb guys talked a little about it during the MS stream and said that the game is steering away from that direction, and that's good to hear.

Thanks for Devolver Digital, I'm finally going to get to play Metal Wolf Chaos and I am thankful for that.

Of course, Cyberpunk 2077 looks absolutely awesome, even if that was also absent of gameplay. I've loved every game CD Projekt Red has made.

And then there's a requisite pile of sequels to games I liked and will probably like: Halo Infinite, Gears 5, Rage 2, Doom Eternal, Wolfenstein: Youngblood, The Division 2, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Fallout 76 has me intrigued but cautious.

Nothing to say that hasn't been said already about Cyberpunk 2077: yes please.

Death Stranding didn't have me convinced before, as I'm not familiar with Kojima's output before MGSV, but if the mechanics do indeed retain the tense moments showcased in the trailers I'm game.

For games shown at E3, so far I'm interested in The Last of Us 2, Elder Scrolls 6, and Assassin's Creed. (I know I'm forgetting a few smaller ones... hm.)

I never played TLoU, but I really enjoyed watching playthroughs, and regardless if the trailer for 2 was "scripted" (as I see a lot of folks arguing about on YouTube), it looks amazing. I just got back into Skyrim to see if I can finish the main quest for once, and I'm considering branching out into the older games, so a new one is exciting. And while I've never played an Assassin's Creed game, over the years I've realized I enjoy sneaky games, and the ability to play solely a female character plus dialogue options has me intrigued.

For older games... this weekend I bought a re-release of STAR WARS Episode I: Racer. I didn't get to play games much growing up, but this was my favorite. I was so disappointed when it started breaking on newer versions of Windows, and I'd given up hope that it'd be updated to work again. I'm just as terrible at things like jumping and anti-grav sections as I was when I was 10, but I'm having a blast.

I find it hard to get excited about 2-years-in-the-future/"when it's done" announcements that have a real risk of either getting cancelled or turning out to be shit once actual gameplay pops up. So it's a bit hard to say. I'm in a Nintendo phase since the Switch and while I don't really give a damn about Smash Bros., the general excitement is contagious. I just wished there was some other, bigger title (that wasn't a Pokemon rehash) announced for 2018. I guess it will be a dry second year for Nintendo until December. Here's hopes that some mystery filler game might pop up out of nowhere (Pikmin 4, pls!). Lots of hopes and dreams sitting on some *far-*future announcements and franchises that might get the Switch treatment. Metroid (duh!), Animal Crossing (maybe I'll finally see what the fuzz is about), even something like Star Fox, F-Zero or Kid Icarus. Or a Pokemon that doesn't look like a DS game. Again, more dreams than "excitement".

Cyberpunk 2077 looks like the best take on the RPG genre in ages but only... "when it's done".

I have a few indies floating around with potential 2018 release dates. Miegakure (as if!) and Manifold Garden. Donut Country looks like my kind of nuts. Let's see.

I hate to bring it up since it's almost a meme, now, but I kinda miss when Valve still made games. They usually filled E3 with some genuine excitement for me, even with very early demos. Portal might be the reason I didn't drop gaming completely back in 2007. L4D was the first new thing to happen in the FPS genre in years, and continued to be until the current DayZ/Battle Royale wave. I miss having a dev studio that would do both big budget production values and deep gameplay innovation. It seems with the AAA/indie split, having both is considered impossible. So, basically, that was a lot of build-up to say: Fuck VR. May it die already so we can focus on real gameplay again.
