So, 2A people, why aren't you in the streets over this?! From my cold, dead hands remember?! Oh because hate comes first. If you think this stops with people you don't like I've got bad news. No...

You see it in the attitudes toward police behavior as well: A black man with a gun? "Cops should assume he's a gangster and shoot on sight." F150-driving hillbilly brandishing pistols like Yosemite Sam or walking around a public place with an AR-15? "How dare you stop him from exercising his constitutional rights?"

The lesson to be learned from the deafening silence from 2A people over these past months is that we should never again accept the argument that the second amendment has a reason to exist. Once sanity is restored, the amendment must go.

Yeah, this is nothing new. They used legislation to try and disarm the black panthers not all that long ago in our history. If you go back further, it's quite easy to find plenty of legislation that was significantly more extreme, some going so far as to allow white people to enter homes and take guns from black folk.

With all that being said, it does appear that even the NRA is planning to fight this... so while the cognitive dissonance is often quite real on the right, it appears consistency isn't entirely lost on all of them.

Just to preemptively bring up something about this that I often see confused in conversations including the NRA and gun control (for example, throughout the linked thread): while Reagan crafted the Mulford Act as racist legislation aimed at disarming the Black Panthers, the NRA supported it because, prior to the 1977 Revolt at Cincinnati, the NRA was essentially a different organization with different priorities, primarily focused on hunting and marksmanship, and generally supported gun control. It wasn't inconsistent or unusual, it was simply coming from an organization with completely different leadership and views than the NRA we know today.

The pre-1977 NRA supported most of the major federal gun control legislation of the 20th century, up until 1977, including the creation of the FFL system, putting the F in ATF, regulation of machine guns, and so on.

Gun Owners of America is a well-known group that fights for 2A rights. It's one of the main alternatives to the NRA for people who want an actual pro-2A group.

Their website doesn't have anything about this, but the latest updates are from late August. However, their Twitter (sigh) account does have a reaction to this same CNN article, which they responded with "GOA opposes any & all gun bans. Full stop." Rep. Massie also responded with "I oppose all gun bans as well."

      Oh because hate comes first.

It feels like you've built a caricature up in your mind then immediately used it to prove yourself right. I don't think it's that different from how the average person can get sucked into all sorts of hate against groups whose members they don't know personally.

People in online gun groups talking positively about the Pink Pistols (WP article) is how I found out there was an LGBTQ+ gun group, even though it would be another two decades before I would realize I was queer myself and better immerse myself in LGBTQ+ content online. It's also worth noting that the Wikipedia article quotes the spokesperson as saying they "get a better response from firearms supporters than from homosexuals".

I don't like the NRA, really at all, but they did show up almost immediately in response to this news.

It’s astonishing that people support the politicians who support these kinds of things. Hate is one hell of a drug.

I know that pointing out hypocrisy in instances like this is essentially filling in the free space on a bingo card, but the sudden emergence of a political will to do something in response to this shooting shows that they could have been doing something all along and haven’t.

If my teacher heart weren’t completely hardened from years of inaction on repeated school shootings, I might have some strong feelings about this.

We all know why this one is different. It’s clearly hate-driven — a furtherance of their oppression of trans people that they’re trying to dress up in an ill-fitting and thoroughly unconvincing outfit of “safety.”

I wish I had something more meaningful and less noise-level to say, but my hardened heart has gotten used to the stony silence on this issue to the point that it almost prefers it.

Honestly, this could be amusingly ironic. If they're forcing people's birth certificates and IDs to match their sex assigned at birth, wouldn't that mean no one is transgender and thus anyone can own a gun?

Obviously I'm grasping for something good out of this, but it just seems like... Well if no one is allowed to be trans, then who are you banning from guns?

The ideology doesn't make sense because it's not internally consistent. They're trying to get anyone diagnosed with body dysphoria as ineligible to own a gun.

And this is why the government requesting records of transition care is terrifying. And of autism diagnoses. Etc.

It is with some trepidation that I watch all of this nastiness unfold from across the pond, since the UK seems determined to import as much of it as possible. I hope my American siblings are managing to stay safe and connected to community at the moment.
