What have you been listening to this week?
What have you been listening to this week? You don't need to do a 6000 word review if you don't want to, but please write something!
Feel free to give recs or dicuss anything about each others' listening habits.
You can make a chart if you use last.fm:
A lot of Against Me. Just a YouTube mix. Listened to their first album all the way through. Just an AM kind of week. Black Me Out is a great song.
I remember when I first heard those lyrics.
I like the whole As if you were a king-maker
I could never get over Thrash Unreal for some readon
That's a very good song.
Finally someone else who loves Against Me! Been listening to a lot of White Cross, SFAFC, RAR, TDB, SSWM...yeah okay I've played every single AM! album at least three times this week.
Super hyped for Laura's new solo album, not to mention the new AM! record! (With Andrew back on Bass!)
Definitely excited
I've recently started listening to vaporwave, which is a music genre I didn't know existed. It's weird. I'm not sure why I like it, I could easily see the bulk of it being used for hold music, but it's great for concentration at work. The Spotify link for my favorite playlist of it is here
Thanks for the playlist! I kind of like Vaporwave too but I've been having trouble introducing myself to it.
I've been listening to The Knife while I study which I've been doing all this week. Love me some Swedish synth-pop.
I wouldn't call myself a huge The Knife fan but I love Shaking the Habitual. It's a damn shame that The Knife is over and Fever Ray doesn't really make anything that close to The Knife's sound anymore.
You should check out their album Silent Shout. Lots of great tracks on it.
kero kero bonito
KKB/DEATH GRIPS COLLAB, when?
I'm really digging the direction the band is taking. I feel like they're just a tad more serious in their production, but they've kept the light lyrics and mood (mostly).
Ive been listening to a lot of TTNG lately.
I really enjoy their song "Baboon"
His Master's Voice in auduobook format. Decent hard science fiction with lots of interesting philosophy. I found the focus on nuclear proliferation and weapons research a bit dated, though appropriate given the time it was written in the late 60s. I normally can't stand older than a couple decades at most.
In terms of Podcasts I've been on my usual rotation of Waking Up, Hello Internet, No Such Thing As a Fish, Hardcore History and Late Night Linux.
In terms of music... It's weird how I grew up looking up artists, torrenting albums and organizing my music collection which all just feels arcane and labor intensive now. Like someone with a CD or Vinyl collection. No, I use Spottily exclusively of late which is absolutely fantastic for having virtually everything at your fingertips and discoverability especially, but there's something missing. I don't know what I'm listening to anymore. I either just shuffle my library or listen to Discover Weekly but the vast majority of my library is just stuff I add to it by ear, not knowing what it is or who made it...
...so I just put my whole library in a playlist.
It's was a good and enjoyable book! How can I say... sarcastic but not cynical. Lem had a sharp eye on human limitations.
C418 and Jeremy Blake.
I put on a classic folk playlist at work and have been enjoying it. I highly doubt the majority of songs would be considered 'classic folk', but it a nice change from our usual classic rock playlists.
Metric albums and random old Rihanna.
I’m going to a Metric’s concert, I’m quite happy
I just got home from seeing the great Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen in concert. Fantastic show! His band is pretty much a jazz quintet (two horns, upright bass, piano and drums) and I heard at least one Art Blakey cover and another jazz standard that I couldn't quite place, maybe a Wayne Shorter song or something like that. The opening act was a harp player named Brandee Younger, and she was also great. It was just her and an upright bassist. It was hypnotic stuff.
Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan. I am very jealous :/
New Death Grips album, various jazz and ska on spotify, and a little bit of dad rock (AC/DC)
I’ve been listening to Mac Demarco. I especially like Another One and Chamber of Reflection!
I've been listening to Cranes, one of my favorite shoegaze bands. Also some youtube J-Pop/Anime mixes.
I discovered a really good space-themed synthwave playlist in Spotify a few days ago. https://open.spotify.com/user/aofd3/playlist/4sgUux9hmykyWYmVoe4W6p?si=rbvhFRLiQ0yOM60AzPKP3w
I've been branching out with Spotify & YouTube Music recommendations, found a few new earworms and rediscovered some old ones. Nothing super adventurous, but they're something different from what I usually listen to.
I've been listening to G. Yamazawa this week. I'm no hip hop aficionado, but I really like his work and feel like he's underrated.
Defected Radio
Been enjoying the newest weeks more than 1 thru 90
Lot of tech-house and into techno. a good bit of Dirty Bird. Its been an interesting transition going from metal to dubstep to then wind up enjoying house music and techno the most.
Dawes’ new album Passwords
Lauren Bousfield, Run The Jewels, BROCKHAMPTON and Girl Talk.
I've been listening to a lot of Dismemberment Plan and LCD Soundsystem this week
For some reason I've been listening to an abnormally large amount of music in the last few days, most notably a few albums:
and one Spotify playlist, Synthwave from Space. It's a pretty nice, atmospheric little playlist. I particularly like Public Service Broadcasting, whose song 'Sputnik' is in that playlist.
I've been listening to some The Gathering, the singer is awesome:

I've not been listening to music on my way to work, for a change. Instead I listened to "Artemis", the new book by Andy Weir, the guy who wrote "The Martian". This one takes place on a city on the moon. I am halfway through by now, the story is interesting and the science is sound.
This great roots reggae podcast: https://balaganjah.podomatic.com/
I listen to a lot of reggae lately. I love the album Exodus of Bob Marley. Other than that I mostly listen to Spotify mixes. I used to curate my music quite vigorously, but I just gave up on my collection of Ogg Vorbis files obtained via youtube-dl (literally deleted it) and went fully Spotify. After all, holding on to things that thightly is not really a pleasant experience.
Nicolas Jaar - Sirens
I wish my personal beliefs didn't effect my listening preferences as much as they do, I really did like some of his older stuff
I feel like Kids see ghosts > Daytona > Ye > Nas. I wish all of them were just a few tracks longer.
Did you not like Teyana Taylor’s or just didn’t listen to it? I noticed it’s not on your list.
Just haven't had the chance to listen to it yet. :)
