Interesting that he's one who didn't challenge the 2020 results.

Unironically most of Trump’s cabinet positions as well as the GOP indicate that it seems like we’re getting more of 2016 runback than the dystopia people thought we’d have

It’s his happy place, after all. Let the Bush-era leftovers ruin the nation instead of having to do that work yourself.

I'm expecting more strongly negative executive actions than I am from Congress.

Trump controls immigration policy and enforcement without needing help from Congress.

He is commander in chief. The diplomats and generals report to him.

If Trump breaks the law and the supreme Court allows it, there isn't much Congress can do

We have a lot of time between now and when the dystopia is expected to hit in force.

I mean, there’s only 2 years before democrats will likely take the house.

Sure, 3 impeachments will be one for the history books.

Does it matter? An impeachment that results in zero consequences might as well have never happened.

And secondly, any amount of resources or time that can be drained away fighting impeachment is time and resources not put towards harming the country.

In the short term, I don't think impeachment actually achieves that - MAGAs just baselessly claim it's a baseless witch hunt, anyone who says "no the democrats are correct here" is declared biased towards democrats, and low-information voters assume that where there's smoke there's fire.

The only reason this is possible is because it’s a secret ballot. There are clearly some Republicans who do have some principles, but it’s unfortunate that courage isn’t one of them.

[Meta/off-topic] I think it might be a good idea to make a megathread for all of the upcoming changes/cabinet appointments in ~society. There is some crazy shit coming out by the hour (for example) and as much as I love to follow politics, I don't know if we want tildes to be dominated by a series of posts like this.

I agree! I would create that topic, except that I wouldn't want to read it much.

Thune is definitely the least bad choice of the many bad options.

Lot of metagaming going on, but Trump is throwing out a lot of names to try and see what he can get away with. The House and Senate don't want to lose members that get them closer to losing control of the house, but they also don't want to end up on the wrong end of Trump. He's pulling from a lot of safe positions, and its possible that a special election could swing the other way, but I wouldn't expect it to be the final list of names.

That's fair I know he's playing the "who will let me skip Senate confirmation" game too. I'm keeping much lower news absorption this time around
