What's on everyone's mind today?
You're free to talk about anything here. You can talk about work, school, any recent trips you've made, things that have made you happy, angered or sad, or just talk with other people.
This dear person who I love but is in a tough place. And the video game Factorio.
I think you are the person in a tough spot, haha. Everyone that I know call the game Cracktorio because it's so addicting. I still have to buy it.
But seriously, I hope the person you love get better! :)
Thank you kind you.
Yeah it's addictive. If you like challenges then go for it. :)
I have a physics exam for my A-levels tomorrow and I am really nervous for it, I hadn't studied any of the content for a year until last week and I am finding it hard to remember it all.
Remember to prioritize sleep over cramming everything into your brain. Sleeping will help you remember whatever information you do have.
This totally critical! It's not worth pulling all-nighters - I've had a much better experience going to sleep when I stop being productive (about 9PM) and then waking up at 4AM to start studying again. Brains don't operate on no sleep.
And also, don't Starve yourself. Attention span decreases with decreased glucose levels
OCR? Me too!
Honestly the key to it in my opinion is just to keep on sanity checking your numbers and making sure all the units square up properly.
AQA for me, I don't know how it compares with OCR, though I imagine they are roughly similar
I'm currently sick today, I'm going to play DnD with friends at 6 over voice chat, it's raining outside, and I'm still in pajamas. Surprisingly cozy. I've got some books and a bag of cherry cough drops and my window open. All in all, chill day.
My 14 year old son is hosting his first "party", they're playing PSVR, listening to records (he got a turntable for his birthday) and overall having a good time. I spent all morning making food and now am hiding out in my room to give them space and also rest my tired ass. They're celebrating graduating from Middle School.
You sound like a good parent. Congrats on your son's milestone.
Thank you :) It's been a really bad year, so I wanted to make sure he had a good time today. So far, so good!
I'll be sitting for my toughest exam so far in 2 days.
Good luck! Do you feel prepared for it?
I do! Feels good to be in good shape.
Thank you!
What is your exam on?
Preparing an elementary summer school class that I'm going to teach. Actually getting it all ready would only take an afternoon since I'm just handing them a level with a basic version of Super Mario Bros and letting them draw their own sprites, mess with whatever values they want, etc. I'm just having trouble making myself do it, I still have a week.
Oh and tomorrow I'm assisting another summer school class but I'm not running it so I just get to play babysitter. Still, it's occupying my brain.
Sounds fun! What are you using that enables them to customize the sprites?
I'm just making a barebones clone of it using the real sprites in the free version of Construct 3, which has a sprite editor and everything included. Really great and in-browser so I can actually do it on the ChromeOS stuff that the school has moved to recently.
Sounds fun! What are you using to run it on ChromeOS?
Just Chrome itself, everything you need for Construct 3 works in the browser.
Ah! Makes sense.
Probably gathering information for registering for classes at university as well as studying for the north examinations. I hardly remember much of chemistry so yeah... Also next week the Japanese imperial family is coming to Hawaii, I'm hoping they do a public facing event. I attended the emporer's new year speeches when I lived in Japan, would be pretty cool to see him again in my own country too.
What classes are you going to be taking?
I'll be a Computer Science student, so mainly ICS 110, Calc 1, an English writing class, Hawaiian as a second language, and one more I'm forgetting at the moment.
I love my lost Sundays. woke up at 1, watch tv in the garage, do the weekly shopping, then drink in the garage till bedtime.
That sounds like a great sunday.
I just ate a ton of chicken wings, I'm stuffed.
Checking the modqueue on Reddit.
Reading comments and hoping that the meetups organized in Brazil by our subreddit goes well next Saturday.
I'm going to read a piece By the magazine Piauí about PCC, also known as Primeiro Comando da Capital, one of the biggest organized crime organizations in South America. I remember in the early 2000s how people feared them in São Paulo. It's worth to read a little bit about it.
How much university work I have to do and that I'll probably have to go a few days without sleep. Some universities are @#$%&! stupid, but such is a life of a student I guess. :(
Just remember that your brain needs sleep to function properly. Good luck.
Gave my last university exam yesterday. The real exam starts now I guess...
I was mulling over buying the best kind of air con (portable) for my small flat as it's roasting in the UK. I finally bought one. Bring on Tuesday!
As an American, is no air conditioning common in the UK?
Trying to summon the effort to finally learn C. I've always wanted to learn it, and I'm struggling to motivate myself.
C is really similar to Java. Personally, I think C is a relatively easy (and even fun) language to learn. If you need help with anything just let me know!
What can you recommend in terms of literature? Is 'The C programming language' still relevant?
That book is a must if you want to learn the language in depth! You will see that many college professors suggest that reading. One of the authors is Dennis Ritchie, the person who created C. The other one is Brian Kernighan, who is famous for being an amazing writer. Many CS people will recommend almost any book written by him.
TL;DR: Yes, it is still relevant.
Definitely agree with scituselectrum on what you're trying to achieve. I've found C to be a bit more nitty gritty versus other languages.
Good luck, find some fun intuitive projects and keep learning !
It's a good language to learn! It's pretty easy to feel demotivated when learning to code, but you should persist to learn that skill!
C++ is a better choice IMO. There are lots of great youtube tutorial videos that will take you step by step.
I'd say it depends on what you are trying to achieve by learning the language. C is better as a tool to better comprehend compilers, the operating system, and anything low-level in general. If what you are trying is to create an application for windows, C++ is a more reliable choice. In this case, it really depends on the goal of the person trying to learn the language.
I'm trying to watch The Expanse in short bursts while my 8 month old naps.
I also started a project to put a shelf in a closet, but after purchasing the wood I got it home only to discover the closet is about 1/8in deeper on one side than the other, so I have to go back to Home Depot to get it re-cut and I just don't feel like going back today.
Uhh, I remember that time. When my boy was that age I was short burst binging Stargate SG-1. Good choice on material, the best sci-fi show in ages if not ever.
It is a great show and makes a very educated guess on the direction the human race is going, but I am not sure if it is the best sci-fi show ever. This would be a great post for discussion, but I would have to say Black Mirror, Rick and Morty, the Twilight Zone, and Star Trek have to be up there too.
I’m home from college for the summer and my girlfriend lives near where I go to school, which is over 1000 miles away. We were together all the time for the entire year, and even though it’s only been a few weeks I really hate being away and miss her so much. I can’t visit because we are both working so I just have to wait 3 more months and I really hate that idea.
I'm thinking about censorship and what role it should play in our discourse.
I tried to get into a conversation on /r/INTP about this community, thinking that some other people might agree, but I got hazed pretty badly for wanting censorship which really isn't the point of what I was saying anyway, people in the thread were pretty rude, which surprised me because that sub is generally pretty laid back and logical, but I got called all kinds of names, I'm pretty upset about how viciously everyone reacted.
Generally I find it hard, especially with Reddit, to gauge an online community's "kindness", especially if the site contains a voting mechanism. Many silent people vote the most agreeable things, you'll find the really active and vocal representative people deep inside comment chains. A definite scare for what could come to be with this site.
Yeah, those communities can vary a lot from time to time, although that doesn't make their reactions right. If this project is executed properly, though, they'll come around.
I think so too, Lord forgive them for they know not what they do.
So... I used to live in a village and moved to a city last year. Ever since I have moved, I haven't socialised enough or explored. For example, in the city, there are so many things you can do like meet interesting people, join a gym, driving schools, music, writing, swimming classes, join meetups and learn skills like photography or cooking or anything really. Like soooo many things! It's like a new world with a myriad of possibilities to me. I couldn't do any of those when I was living in a village. But in the past year, I haven't done anything at all. I just got too busy with my work and also, I didn't want to come out of my comfort zone. Bu I am slowly changing myself. Last month, I joined swimming and learned a bit of it. This week I am driving classes and hoping to learn driving soon.
I love travelling and I am planning to go on a solo trip. So, thats what I have been thinking :D
I'm attempting to get a week of "relaxing" in before my summer semester starts up next week. And by "relaxing" I mean end up with thirty web tabs open until I end up in an exhaustion nap.
Been kinda sick for a couple of days now but excited to finally start work tomorrow.
What do you do for work?
I'm a student but during the summers I work at my dad's company. We operate many trips from many companies around the world. It's my job to make sure the guides have everything they need, I wash dishes, buy food, prepare tents for some trips, charge torches, make sure they have everything they need for glacier walks and a lot more.
No day is the same and I really enjoy it.
Thats great, sounds like a really great job!
I assume you've just left high school? After a big success like getting into college, maybe you have may disease: https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_Disease
You are most certainly not alone in feeling this way. Do not give up. I am not sure if the country you are in has a similar system as ones in the United States, but I would suggest instead of becoming a full time student to initially take it slowly and take two classes per term. Once you push through that intimidation you will be surprised at what you can do. College really does just consist mostly of being on time and handing the work in. Engage with the teachers both within and outside of class, most of them (not all) actually do give a shit about their students especially if they see you are putting in the effort. Even if your job opportunities are limited, you have a much better chance to a decent standard of living with a degree. Maybe after earning it you can try and find work overseas. I don't know where you are from, but you are well articulated in English which is enough to get your foot in the door internationally depending on your chosen career. I am sorry you are stressed, many of us are in the same boat, but if you keep pushing you will land somewhere doing what makes you happy.
I just spent the day battling with windows trying to get windows defender to stop nuking my disk 24/7. Over the months I've been trying various registry edits and policy changes but nothing seemed to work. It always came back after its "temporary disable" thing and then my programs would take several minutes to load while it waited on my slow harddrive. The registry changes kept reverting automatically too for some reason.
When you open a new browser instance and cant load google.com within 5 mins, that's a problem. So someone on discord had the idea of just adding the entire C drive to the exclusions and that seems to have done the trick.
That's been plaguing me for months on/off when I could find the motivation to try new solutions... but it has kept coming back over and over and over at all the worst times (middle of games/films/skype calls). But that's finally over and I'm just left with a really salty taste for the whole windows ecosystem. I want to go back to the days where I had a magic config that never ran into any of the "trope" "M$" things.
Sorry for the bit of a rant there lol
I would be pretty concerned that Defender's behavior suggests that something core in your system is compromised. I could be wrong.
If you have a legit copy of Windows you might want to back up your key with a utility like ProduKey and do a full reinstallation to be safe.
its a fresh install. Unless my OEM factory reset and ninite.com is compromised then nothing could have infected it i don't think. It's also a new laptop (<4 mo)
I honestly just think that this harddrive is beyond subpar as even now (defender hogging fixed) if i download something through steam; when its writing to disk it re-creates the same disturbances as the defender stuff. Although its a bit less sluggish since steam does things in chunks.
sidenote; most listings have this laptop with an ssd instead of just a hdd. but i noticed it has an nvme slot so imma get a card for that and hopefully i'll always be able to sidestep the shoddy performance
Wow, that's actually bizarre, you're probably right about the hard-drive, I suppose you could test it with a linux live environment and some benchmarks. Good luck.
Taking finals over the next few days, plus a paper due, so I'm studying my ass off and trying to write the paper. And procrastinating by being on here :)
Best of luck! How long do you have left on the paper?
Thanks! I have a couple of days left (until Wednesday) and it's not too long a paper, but I'm still a bit worried because this paper will have a pretty big impact on my final grade.
How much is left? What's it about?
I've just got a few more pages to write. I'm looking at D.H. Lawrence's "Odour of Chrysanthemums", specifically how Lawrence uses his description of the setting and exploration of Mrs. Bates thoughts to criticize industrialization.
Not super difficult since Lawrence, at least to my reading, makes it pretty clear that that's what he thinks, but still a bit stressful to write.
Ahhh literature. A lovely subject I always hated writing essays on.
Good luck with the rest of it, hope it all turns out well!
Thank you! I hope so, too.
Getting super super anxious. There is a bigly massive storm heading my way, and they always terrify me. Had a bad experience as a kid with a storm that blew up all the appliances and stuff, and ever since, never liked them.
Hope it turns out all right. I believe with modern technology you should be alright . Not a fan of storms myself, are you located in Texas?
Nah, Australia
Protect the kangaroos !
Apparently, Trump and mental health issues if my post history is anything to go by.
I had a job interview last Wednesday that I think went well. I'm still waiting to hear back from them. I hope I get the job. I really want out of my current job.
What's the job?
Programmer at a medical review company.
I'm hoping to get a new job pretty soon, though.
Sounds fun!
How I should be studying for my GRE, gathering letters of recommendation, and contacting a lawyer about lost wages, but I just want to relax...
and how i went from being in great shape to 3 years later developing acid reflux as a result of obesity. at least I finally hit the gym again today?
