What are you working on?

Whether it's for for school, work, or a hobby, share a project or goal that you are working on and how it's going. If you're trying to accomplish it, it fits here. Writing a book, making a program, perfecting a recipe, beating a challenge in a video game, fitness PRs, etc. - all is welcome.

EDIT: I just realized there's a monthly thread similar to this in ~creative, so I probably won't post like this again. But feel free to keep sharing here! This one I suppose is a bit more open ended.

If I may be honest: Myself. I'm going through therapy and it's going well! Lately I've been more outside the house than inside and it's actually nice. This is a life I want to live.

Launching a new YouTube channel. I've done some things in the style I'm going for in the past, but I'm trying to put together something that I can regularly work on and make into "a thing" for me. I primarily want to write and talk about anime, but I'm trying to keep it open in terms of subject matter, since I bounce around between so much and I could never consistently stay on one thing.

Anyway I wrote a good chunk of a few scripts, including a short "why do I care about anime? / why does this channel exist?" thing that I completed, recorded, and did the audio portion of the editing. In the next few days I'll put together the video portion, which I expect to be tough. Knowing just how much anime footage you can show on screen and just how much you have to alter it to not get dogpiled is really difficult, my old format switched between things so often that it wasn't a huge deal (though still annoying), so I don't expect to have this figured out right away and it's a big part of why I just want to throw stuff out there without that much of a care for if it's as substantial as I'm eventually aiming for.

I've realized that even though my mental health is significantly better than it was just a little while ago, my life is heading in a really negative direction and the path I'm on is nothing but hell, so I'm hoping this will be a positive outlet to pump work into. I have a problem actually doing things, so we'll see.

I'm actually subscribed to both of those subreddits, and have learned a lot from them. Do you have any 'formal' training? There have been multiple times where I've wanted to delve a bit deeper into the subject, but I feel that to really jump into it you have to learn Koine Greek or Latin. Without having taken a class dedicated to either of those I find it difficult to take the time to self learn.

In any case its a very deep subject in the sense that you can get as into it as you want. Definitely very cool, and something I'd like to learn more about.

That's a wonderful goal. I often feel that there are many misconceptions about bible scholarship as it is very often (though it doesn't need to be!) mixed with apologetics and people obviously have strong feelings on that. But the subject itself is as academic as you can get, and can only serve to elevate conversations over religion - if you are debating something as central to civilization as religion has been over the last few millenia, it helps to know something about it!

And yeah, I realize that knowing these languages probably isn't strictly necessary, but I can't help but feel that without direct access to the texts I will have to rely on other scholars for my interpretation. This isn't inherently bad but if I ever get the chance I would love to learn one of them (probably Greek).

I've been spending the last few days learning back-end web development via Node.js and such. Didn't expect the amount of libraries I'd need, but as of today I've finally got some basic stuff operational on all three parts (i.e. client-side site, node.js server, database) and it feels really good to have it working.

It also lead to me finding out that I should've been using CSS Grids all this time, and it's very, very nice to finally be able to center something without having to wrestle it first.

I am a student researcher in a cosmology group, so recently I have been working on writing a program to generate initial conditions for cosmological simulations. This isn't a particularly 'challenging' problem within the field, but it is a great learning experience and I have had to do a lot of reading and such to get to where I'm at. My programming skills are the main roadblock right now: I'm okay in python but I need finer control over memory management for these types of simulations and switching to C++ has made things go a lot slower. But I'm still making progress!

Outside of work, I have been thinking about building an 8-bit computer a la Ben Eater, and I bought Digital Computer Electronics in order to learn a bit more. But I guess I'm not really working on that I suppose, just thinking about it!

    A few things:

1 - An experimental new form of nutrient delivery in agriculture crop plant root systems using chemical bonding reagents, electromagnetics, and vapor distillation using some basic automation at the moment. Had some good progress, sort of my primary project of the last few years. I have somewhere around 300-400 failed tests and experiments with only two barely succeeding at the moment, but those have been more recent.

2 - A highly customizable news/newsletter service that has extreme amounts of automation. Will help manage my political blogs and organizations (I help run a non-profit political activist network with around 100k members, we don't make any money so working on a new technological aspect that can help out on that end)

3 - I'm taking over a lease for a new house to rent, the entire bottom floor (walk-out basement, where my workspace/office/mattress will reside) has been shelled out and only the joists still exist so going to need to drywall, insulate, and install plumbing and kitchen appliances. Going to be a fun time.

Just a side thing, but I'm rebuilding a media spreadsheet that uses a combination of APIs to pull the best TV and movie info. I've started structuring everything so its suitable to share with others, since I've already shared it with some and found a lot of room for improvement.

One funny (read: frustrating) thing with comparing IMDB, TMDB, TVMaze, etc is how inconsistent and / or unreliable these data sets are. Some add prefixes to titles (The, A, etc), where other major works just aren't listed.

Ultimately, what I think all films and television series need is something similar to an ISBN with a centralized, core database that these sites can pull from. IMDB IDs are pretty much the standard, but they're still a business that can eventually be shut down.

Current animated screenshot (as of commenting): http://www.kosterz.ca/g/ki/images/ki002.gif

There are a couple of changes that aren't in the screenshot, such as the sword swing is 180° instead of stopping at 90°, a HUD (though it doesn't actually do anything yet), and basic room transitions with multiple rooms.

I see you're re-learning programming. Has godot been welcoming in that regard? After I'm done with my current stuff I might try and re-kindle a few game ideas I once had but never really had the programming chops to make happen.

Thanks :) I've been enjoying the process. I've spent probably 16ish hours on it so far. But that's been across the board of programming, fighting with Godot's animation editor, and spriting out the current tiles and graphics, minus the enemy explosion.

Everything is based on Python (I believe), which is very forgiving (no need to use brackets or semicolons, just make sure you're indenting correctly)

All functions can be ctrl+clicked to bring up in-application breakdowns of the function.

All in all, it's seems very user friendly, but I can't compare it to Game Maker or Unity, as I've barely dabbled. Just grab a tutorial and start following it, it gives you an understanding of the basics, generally.

I've been re-writing my discord bot. I've got this small community server that loves its niche features. But over time the bot turned into a steaming pile of spaghetti. Usually I can just shuffle the spaghetti around to add whatever new features, but it got to a point where I actually couldn't add anything more without other things breaking.

So its time for a total overhaul. This week has been spent dealing with the worst aspect of programming. Time. I hate it. Why does time even exist? I mean honestly? It took me nearly 4 hours to pinpoint one issue because for some reason all my dates were getting 0'd out. Turns out that my parser was getting "-62135596800" as a unix timestamp value.

A spree of indiscriminate print statements later and I think I've finally got my voting system ironed out, but now I've got to make sure that it can resume after an interruption, since discord is prone to wild and unpredictable issues.

I haven't gotten the hang of git yet, I've only started using it on this project because a friend works in the industry and I can't bear to trigger him much longer. But I keep forgetting to actually commit changes in reasonable chunks. But hey ho, at least I've got more than ctrl-z version control now!

    Object oriented programming.

I have been working through the chapters on Classes in Downey's Think Python. I have written a few simple scripts in Python to do some automation as well as went heavily into the world of Pandas, NumPy, and a bit into SciKit-Learn. I have a big presentation later this week discussing predictive analytics in my department that I hope turns out well. Overall though, I'm just taking it easy and one day at a time.
