I'm still waiting for gens 2 or 3, but I'm glad to see more parties playing with the concept.

I'm not sure how much you follow the tech press, but the new Razr was leaked to high heaven before the event today.

I've never seen one of these foldable phones in real life, and I'm not exactly a material scientist, but is it even possible for a surface to unfold with zero seams or creases? All of the marketing renders show completely smooth panels over the hinge. Is it true that you can't see or even feel where the fold is, or is this a white lie of advertising?

I mean for any devices in this category, not specifically the Razr. Just asking about the physical practicalities of engineering something like this.

At least in the case of the Samsung one they don't fold the screen as much as curve it, so the phone never closes completely flat. Even then there are reports that there's a soft but visible seam down the middle in real world usage, so not quite there yet compared to what the ads show, unfortunately.

Aside from nostalgia, I'd like a flip phone again because they're more durable than modern smartphones. I feel like the fact that you absolutely need a case for your phone for it to not shatter when you drop it is a major design flaw, and almost no one had or needed cases for flip phones.

I don't think the RAZR design would make it any more resilient against shattering. First, there is a secondary screen on the outside that is completely bare. Second, you don't have to hit the screen directly for it to shatter—shock waves can propagate through the bezel, especially if it's in the right spot (like corners or against a sharp edge).

To make matters worse, designing an effective, functional and decent-looking case for this would be a difficult task.

If you want a durable smartphone, just look at most of Motorola's other offerings. I buy their phones specifically because they use polycarbonate screens instead of glass for most of their phones (among other reasons, of course).

People have gone somewhat crazy over glass screens because they can't be scratched as easily (because they're putting them in the same pocket as their keys, I guess?), but they don't realize that's why they shatter so easily. This is made even worse by the trend of removing bezels, which would normally be able to absorb some of the energy of a drop. And then for some reason people still put screen protectors on them, even though it's supposed to be scratch-proof. But polycarbonate screens do not shatter anywhere nearly as easy. And personally speaking, I have never scratched any of my polycarbonate screens, so I really don't see scratching as a big issue.

It's a nostalgia thing, for sure. However, as long as the screen is durable enough, the snap of closing a flip phone is mucho satisfying.

Yeah, Shazam says "They Don't Make 'Em Like Me" by Pigeon John Feat. Ben l'Oncle Soul. Metadata says "Label: Telephone Company". Always funny to find non-public stuff on Shazam.

A lot of that Syntax Records stuff and the related groups were great.

Feeling some serious déjà vu right now! Nice to see you're still active on Tildes. Somebody's gotta keep representing classic gospel hip-hop around here and that person is you. And me. Us.

Oh snap! I forgot that I linked that before. It’s such a catchy record. I’ll have to brush up for when this happens again. :)

I'm kind of excited, although not likely to be able to afford the phone any time soon. Foldable screens are new and interesting (and black magic as far as I'm concerned) and I genuinely miss having a small outer screen for at-a-glance info. Yeah, lock screens serve a similar purpose, but I can see battery savings from only needing to power up a smaller screen to check the time, notifications, etc. rather than the full screen. Although I guess it depends on if that screen is on and backlit all the time in folded mode.

Also I find it humorous that the lesser, outer screen is around the size of my circa 2008 Blackberry's main screen, and certainly many times higher res. Neat how technology progresses!

The original razr really was an iconic phone, but this new one does not appeal to me at all. Something about it screams "cheap knockoff", even though it's clearly a more expensive and premium phone than the original ever was. All this commercial accomplishes is making me want my old razr back.

I'd be willing to pay the prices these folding phones cost if I thought they had any chance of getting reasonable updates and the companies making them were willing to say, "Look, we know these are early adopter devices and you're paying a lot for them, so here's a warranty that includes accidental screen damage coverage." Basically, built in AppleCare+. I don't think that's crazy for the prices they're charging.

For updates, niche and new devices like this (especially ones running Android) have a terrible history in terms of getting software updates.
