Comment on Ajit Pai knew DDoS claim was false in January, says he couldn’t tell Congress in ~tech

"I guess what I'm looking for is some measure of accountability as the chairman," Schatz told Pai. "I understand you were in a difficult position, but I can't imagine that there was not another way to thread this needle and deal with us in our oversight capacity."
Thank you, Senator.
And then your CIO said that it was a DDoS attack, and yet [Sen.] Ron Wyden and I and others in the legislative ranks said that doesn't make any sense; the tech community said that doesn't make any sense. I think a lot of people's first instinct was that it didn't make any sense. I understand your reliance on your CIO; I don't blame you for that. My question is, did you have any doubt at any time before the [OIG] report came out a couple of weeks ago?
Pai answered that he initially assumed the outage was caused by the John Oliver-related surge in comments. "My assumption [in May 2017] was that it was John Oliver's viewers," Pai said.
So, he acknowledges that he suspected that the large surge in traffic was due to John Oliver's coverage of Net Neutrality. He acknowledges that John Oliver's show has had a significant impact on the site in the past. Yet, he completely rolled with narrative that it was absolutely a DDOS attack. Not a possibility, he spoke as if it was a certainty. Yet, there was an ongoing investigation as to whether there actually was a DDOS attack? He has said repeatedly over the last few months that a DDOS attack happened, with certainty, and that gave them the narrative that the comment site had been compromised allowing them to repeal Net Neutrality. I'm not buying any of this and at the least he needs to be removed for ineffective leadership.
Pai did not face any criticism from Republicans on the Senate Commerce Committee today about the FCC's DDoS lies. Committee Chairman John Thune (R-S.D.) mentioned the inspector general's conclusions in his opening statement and said he "look[s] forward to hearing how the commission will prevent this in the future." But Thune made that comment only after praising Pai for his "leadership to improve the openness and transparency of commission processes," and he did not ask Pai any direct questions about the false statements to Congress during the hearing.
Color me surprised. I wasn't able to watch the coverage, did our Congressmen actually sound like they kind of had an idea as to what they were talking about? Or was it basically the Zuckerberg hearing all over again?

I would much rather see $92 million go towards something such as that than some stupid parade for a military that is unquestionably larger than any other nation. It would just be $92 million spent to satisfy Trump's ego.

Just playing devils advocate here, but if you don't know how many votes other users in the thread have, it would be hard to judge if your post is doing well or not, no?

I don't like the idea of a public based voting system, as it takes away from the privacy-oriented aspects of this site that I, and many other users, have come to love.
This thread did give me an idea and I'd like some input on it as to whether it makes sense to others. What if we had two separate votes. We keep the current voting system in place, where votes can be placed when a post or comment adds to discussion. We continue to not have a "downvote" option and that vote is just counted as a "This post contributes to the discussion." Then, a second voting system for agree/disagree that has no effect on how high or low the post appears amongst other posts. Comments are still sorted by quality and content, but also shows how other users are reacting to the content of the submission.
For example, this thread is getting a lot of votes because many users think that it's a discussion that should be had, but from the comments it seems like most users disagree with what the content is suggesting be added to the site. So, it would appear on the top posts of Tildes, but would also show that the content/suggestion is mostly disagreed with. Currently, without looking at the comments, it may appear that a lot users support the idea because it has been voted for so many times.
EDIT: After looking at the thread that @Algernon_Asimov linked, I think I have changed my mind on this. In theory, it sounded like a good idea but in practice I do think it would ultimately lead to lower quality discussion. If you liked the idea I posted from above, and haven't read the thread linked below I recommend doing so. An agree/disagree would likely lead to users hitting disagree and moving on without stating why they disagree.

235789012983 Can someone explain the reasoning behind the statutes of limitations in the first place? The people affected by these crimes still live with the memory of these traumas. Just because time passes...It has also triggered debate about whether statutes of limitations should be expanded.
Can someone explain the reasoning behind the statutes of limitations in the first place? The people affected by these crimes still live with the memory of these traumas. Just because time passes doesn't mean the damage is undone. If it can be proven, without a doubt that someone committed a crime, why does time passed become a factor?

I don't care if someone posts memes and low effort comments because I know that the community here wouldn't respond positively to it and there is nothing similar to karma to keep track of. I think most people who are seeking invites to the site are wanting more in depth discussion that is harder and harder to find on reddit these days.

I haven't run into anyone having a profile sharing hateful messages or anything, but I wouldn't send an invite to that user because that's not the kind of community that we are trying to build here.
If someone seems like more of a lurker, I will generally mention that since Tildes is still relatively small, that the community would appreciate their contribution to add content to the site. The few people I have mentioned that to have said that they will try to contribute when they can contribute to the discussion, and to me that's enough.

Then a friend of mine opened a bar and asked me to bartend and I was able to work through some anxiety issues and get more comfortable socializing for hours at a time.
Now, I travel a lot for work and when I'm traveling I'm with a team of coworkers all day, every day for weeks at a time. Usually by the last few days I am very quiet and keep to myself because I'm just so mentally exhausted I'd rather just keep to myself than try and follow along and contribute to a conversation.

Then I would get banners in my notifications (not a sound alert or anything) saying how long it would take to get work everyday, about 15 minutes before I left for work. I am convinced it was following my routine because I was working in food service at the time and was working primarily night shifts, so it wasn't just a morning alert.

Comment on ‘Hitler was right’: KC area winner of Missouri House primary leaves trail of bigotry in ~news

I really wish I could understand this kind of thinking. I mean, understanding what leads someone to think like this, and to support it to the point you are willing to put together a YouTube channel and a radio show to spout your hate. Do they actually, truly believe this?
I remember speaking to a man in a bar a few years back, before the 2016 elections began and we got on the topic of how I work in IT and how his 14 year old son was really good with computers and what-not. He then begins telling me how his son had found evidence that Jews were secretly planning to take over the world. Every single Jew, not just the higher ups. Every single Jew was in on it. I tried explaining that his son was buying into conspiracy theories and that he should try and do something about it. But he believed it too. He said that his son showed him all the evidence and convinced him too, because "My son is smarter and more resourceful than I am." For an hour I showed him conspiracy theory platforms for every topic I could think of that showed how they can spin facts to sound convincing and legitimate, but he didn't budge. At the end of the night he was still completely convinced that Jews were plotting to take over the world. I legitimately believe that our education system has failed us. There is a good portion of the population that has no idea how to fact check, research, and distinguish fact from fiction using reliable sources.
That said, coming from Missouri, I wouldn't be surprised to see a candidate such as this winning in a rural area, but the suburbs of Kansas City really surprised me. Hopefully Democratic support is overwhelming in the coming elections.

I had one shut the bathroom door on itself. I'm not sure if it ran out of batteries or it realized it was contained in a small area, but it ended up powering off right against the door of the carpeted bathroom. I thought I was going to break something forcing the door open enough to move it.
