I always enjoy seeing interesting usernames. Ones that are anonymous or simply actual names are not as fun as a sort of online nickname. In the last twenty-five years I've spent online, I've rotated through a handful, and they tend to mutate over the years with prefixes or suffixes or clipping bits off.

The messenger bag I use on my bike has a second strap (sometimes literally called a cycling strap) that helps cinch it to the body. It still means the weight is a little off-center, but not as bad as letting it flop around.

I usually just lug around a single pannier that I can clip on or off my rear rack, but the messenger bag is useful when I'm doing more walking with a bag off-bike.

Doing some quick math: that round trip would cost anywhere from $40 (assuming a Prius) to $200 (assuming a big pickup) in gas alone.

Assuming parking (for drivers) and in-town transit (for rail riders) is something of a wash, I guess it means that for one person it's roughly comparable in price (assuming some median fuel economy), but more expensive for those with fuel-efficient cars, or EVs. Likewise a lot more expensive for groups that could otherwise carpool.

All that said, I hope it's a success, because we need more of this. Though I'd rather it not be privatized...

Two very different games: Armored Core VI and Tears of the Kingdom. Both have mechs, I guess.

ACVI: nearing the end of Chapter 4, and still loving it. Got stuck on some of the bosses, but finally been figuring out how to learn how to counter them properly. I've loved how not-open-world it is, in terms of picking your missions from a list, and replaying them for a better score (and credits for new stuff). As a newcomer to the series, I've been pleasantly surprised with how weighty the mechs feel, even light mechs.

ToTK: nearing the equivalent of Chapter 4, I think. About to go to the fourth region, anyway. I'm fighting my urge to tick off pointless sidequests and just go for it - to see it through the ending - and then come back to the world and play all the unfinished sidequests if I really want to. I'm still amazed that they made the game work so well on the switch. Still getting absolutely wrecked by Silver Lynels.

Judging by the footage and gameplay we have seen through the various trailers this game will likely end at Nibelheim.

My thoughts on the very spoiler-y link So saying it ends there definitely feels like it will be *that scene*, but given how the Remake was - I wonder *who* will be in that scene this time.

Exactly. The only time in my life I've had any modification to my name was adding a prefix to it because of a terminal degree - but that hardly counts.

In contrast, my partner will have the societal expectation thrust upon her to replace her surname with mine when we get married. That's weird. It's a tradition rooted in possession in much of the world, and painting over an important part of one's identity shouldn't be the default IMHO.

He overuses adjectives and adverbs. He can't make a decent point, so he adds words to make it sound more scholarly than it is. That's been his shtick from day one. Also, there's not a single paragraph in that article, unless you count one where he prefaced a sentence with a single word question (EDIT: there's a couple more questions that preface the single sentence response). Overuse of colons, semicolons, and em-dashes (or en-dashes?) means that he drones on in print as much as he does when he speaks.

This is of course skipping past his actual views, but as a writer, IMHO he sucks.

I lived in a small town/village near Iquitos for a couple years, and there's a lot of "don't go too far down that path, because the narcos work there." Unfortunately kidnapping young women and terrifying local communities just trying to get by is all too common, and about them getting caught - most of the cops I met there were openly corrupt.

So it sounds like the criminals have drones, and one of the articles in Spanish came to the same conclusion: that it's a plot to terrify folks. They're preying on a general cultural predilection for oral tradition and mythology.

A lot of old timers I met talked about snakes they saw that were a hundred meters long, dolphins that transform into men and drown young women, and how howler monkeys will grow in size and break shotguns in half with their bare hands. Since those kinds of stories are fairly common (obviously not believed by all, but some deeply religious/spiritual traditions and belief systems persist), it seems like a good bet that narcos/poachers/illegal miners/loggers would take advantage of that and dangle some creepy shit from drones. Nasty fuckers.

    Astral Chain, the final boss.

I enjoyed the game, despite the game, which is probably why I didn't feel compelled to fully beat it. The mechanics were a lot of fun - but the storyline was a little wackier than I tend to like - so as a result I didn't feel a compulsion to see "me" beat it, and was content to just watch some cutscenes on YouTube.

Still, the mechanics to control two characters at once were neat, if not a little fiddly. Would love to see another entry in the series.

Thank you for the clarification: I'll strike through the "electric" bit in my reply, since there's some (but not much) overlap in ICE and PHEVs, but only in cases where someone goes from a small to large vehicle (hence the "might" in my comment!).

I'm agreed that there's nuance, but I'm just overly-sensitive to poorer folks being hit hard, even (or especially) when I agree with the legislation.

We can't let perfect be the enemy of good - especially when we're talking about combating climate change. Things like 100% subsidization of new EVs for all isn't doable, of course, but I want to try to ensure that those who may not have the resources to make better climate-related decisions don't get hurt disproportionately (even though they may be edge cases).

Well said to both of you. I'm one of those freaks that insists on riding a bicycle everywhere I can, but I also don't want the burden of environmental responsibility to fall so heavily on folks who are economically disadvantaged. When I was "forced" to buy a car (living in the USA, and in a place with harsh winters), I was lucky enough to be able to afford a Prius. Not everyone can, though.

The article mentioned a 2k pound "scrappage" incentive to replace old vehicles...but as you say, replacing an older car with a new Electric or PHEV might not be the right choice, if we consider lifetime emissions. It's also just frankly not enough, given new(er) car prices. More nuance in legislation is critical, because we (folks interested in tackling the climate crisis) need to ensure we don't just heave poorer folks into the wood chipper to do so.

If I were to write the policy, there's be a lot more nuance. In any case I'd scale usage/pollution fees to wealth. Ten bucks for a toll is less than a rounding error for many folks, but for others it means food.

Embarrassingly enough, I usually just follow what Garmin tells me to do. The two extreme ends are "speed repeats" and "long kind of easy" runs. Basically it's Speed v. Endurance. I've been doing more of the speed repeats lately, so it hasn't been a 50/50 split of these two main categories.

The speed repeats are either: A) alternating 800m running @ near-max speed and 3 minutes walking, until you feel like you want to keel over (after warmup and cool downs, it's about an hour); or B) 7 minutes running fast, 3 minutes slightly less fast, also for about an hour (including a warmup and cool down). Those are the runs that get my heart into the "Max" or "Threshold" states (for me, 166+ and 150+ beats per minute, respectively).

The "long but kind of easy" is just running for an hour, at a speed that puts my heart comfortably in the "OK yes I'm definitely exercising" range, e.g. "aerobic" (for me that's 130-150 bpm). I'll occasionally push this one to an hour and a half.

Finally: when I feel like I'm overdoing it, I'll do an easy half hour run instead of either of those.

Good to know! I've been lamenting the lack of gyro-aim (playing on PC with an 8BitDo Pro2 controller, if anyone knows how to get it working with gyro in this game), since I've been so spoiled by it in Tears of the Kingdom on the Switch.

This is my first Armored Core, though I've long-admired the franchise from afar. I grew up playing MechWarrior games on the PC, so I love mech-battling and customization, even though the two are very different in terms of gameplay.

I did play some Daemon X Machina, and while I liked it, it felt a little too "floaty" for my taste. I was worried ACVI would be too similar to DxM, but I'm a couple hours into ACVI and I'm loving it! Glad to hear it's up to the standards of a veteran, too. I've been learning that I can't just spam dodge and jump around erratically, as chaotic as the battlefield gets.

I'm definitely in a similar boat, though thankfully without a persistent injury. Hitting a sub 50 minute 10k was my latest "big" achievement for my fairly modest goals, and my 5RM lifting total is hair shy of yours.

Since I'm in my late thirties, and a scientist (meaning grant-writing consumes far too much of my life): I know I'm not going to be adding too much weight to the bar, or shaving more than a couple minutes off my 10k time. However, I'm far from dead, and would like to see what I can modestly improve without the risk of hurting myself in a way that makes long-term progress and maintenance harder. My ultimate goal is to be that athletic eighty-year old that impresses people someday.

So to get back to your question: I'm interested in hearing everyone else's advice, but what I can offer as someone nearly as strong as you, but that has reached your unremarkable running goal: I use a Garmin watch. There's some good "Coach" programs on the app and watch, and it makes me kick my own ass more than I would without all the beeping. I lift 3X a week, and run in the days I'm not lifting (with one day off entirely). Essentially I'm just doing two different programs at once: one lifting program (a modified Madcow type thing, though I'm trying to find something better), and one running program.

TLDR: Six days a week, at six AM, I'm running or lifting for roughly an hour (I alternate days).
