I'm also an at-home software engineer and I think I can speak to the pixel density issue. I ended up picking up a PG42UQ 4k 120Hz OLED monitor as my primary and an LG DualUp vertical monitor as secondary. "But 42 inches is huge and the pixels must be so obvious!" They are... if you're sitting up close. I have my monitor set near the back edge of my 30" desk and I've found that having that extra ~12-18" works wonders for my eyes. I don't really have that moment where you look up from the screen and can't focus on distant things for a bit. Also, I get more desk space in front of me and leaning back in my chair doesn't have such a big impact on readability - Doing so only increases the distance to the screen by ~30% instead of 100%.

All that to say, pixel density is important, but it's also a function of distance between you and the display. Getting a new monitor is a good chance to reconsider the ergonomics of your setup overall.

To directly answer some of your questions:

is the jump from 1440 to 4k as noticeable

I think it definitely is, but I also have sharp eyesight with no glasses/contacts.

My current primary display has a low response time... is this something I can give up and not notice?

You might notice it at first, mostly when scrolling. I think it's one of those things that you stop seeing after a while.

I just moved my office into a loft with poor lighting.

What you're really looking to avoid in a dimly lit room is having a monitor that's too bright. If your can be dark but still readable, that's key. Good contrast helps with that because you're starting from a darker baseline and your monitor won't have to emit too much light to show you a readable image.

Is my fps going to take a hit from increasing the resolution of my secondary display?

Not unless you've got something else going on over there like a video being played. I see no difference in framerates with my secondary monitor (2560x2880) connected or disconnected.

Not really. They're both looking at the same inbox though. Checking your voicemail in either place clears the notification from the other.

My family and I have had Google Fi on iPhones for several years now. Setup can be a small headache, but beyond that everything runs pretty smoothly. iMessage, FaceTime, 5G, etc. all work flawlessly. Visual Voicemail in the native app is a little hit-or-miss, but Google provides their Fi app that provides good visual voicemail support. iOS did bring improvements in SMS chat (no more emoji response messages that read like [👍 to "lol omg wtf"], but I don't see Google Fi support for RCS in Settings.

This really makes it feel like the offer is just to make headlines for the positive PR spin. If Starlink offered a free 60 day return policy on the hardware, it might feel more genuine.

Yeah, the 970 has the same 2x6 pin connector setup and a lower TDP than the 7870. Should even be a decent boost in performance!

I have an old GTX 970 collecting dust that I could send your way for free if it's compatible. I'd rather it see some use than sit in my closet until I finally end up recycling it.

Things have been crazy the last few weeks so I haven't had a ton of time to be on, but they should start calming down again soon as my kids get back into the school year.

A stable close to the transit hub sounds awesome! Feel free to build wherever and I can adapt

I don't know if 'rappy snappy' is a bigger part than null binding when it comes to AD wiggling in overwatch. Rappy snappy can help the player wiggle faster, but they still need to repeatedly swap between A and D with little to no overlap or gap between inputs. With SOCD, the player only needs to hold A and spam D and they get a perfect wiggle.

I don't think there's a hard requirement for hall effect customizable actuation. Scripts to emulate this effect (Null Bind Scripts) have existed for a long time, but they run on the PC side. I suspect any keyboard's firmware could detect that e.g. A is being held when D is actuated and stop sending a key-down signal for A, it's just a question of how easy it is to modify that firmware and customize functionality.

For those feeling out of the loop, here's a quick rundown.

In Counter-Strike, your accuracy is reduced while you're moving and you don't stop moving instantly (you drift a little bit) when you release a movement key. You can cancel most of this drift and therefore regain accuracy more quickly if you 'counter strafe', or briefly press the opposite key when you want to stop. If you unintentionally hold opposing movement keys or aren't pressing either key for any time during this transition, you don't stop as quickly. So, it's one of the core skills of high-level Counter-Strike players to be able to counter-strafe effectively.

Razer and subsequently Wooting have developed keyboards that can automatically release the A key when the D key is pressed (or any two other keys) and vice versa, a feature Razer calls SnapTap and Wooting calls SOCD. This makes counter-strafing much simpler by eliminating any input where both A and D are held simultaneously.

In a nutshell, users with this feature no longer need to perfectly time the release of A and the press of D to be at the same instant. Instead you can just press D while continuing to hold A for a moment and they keyboard sorts out the rest for you.

Optimum did a great video on the subject on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Feny5bs2JCg
