The Galaxy S23 is the best phone I've ever used, by far. What rockets it over the edge is battery life.

On my previous S21 (and most other Android phones), I'd get around 4-6 hours screen on time. Thanks to the new Snapdragon, the S23 is beyond anything I've ever seen - if I'm a true degenerate, on my phone all day with a hangover, it gives me 10 hours. Consistent 10 hours SOT, often using high battery apps like TikTok. Right now I'm at 55% with 5h50m SOT.

I never have to worry about charging on a normal day of course, but even when I'm out and about on cell signal using GPS a good amount, it doesn't even cross my mind that it'll ever run out of juice. Battery stress just isn't a factor anymore.

The rest of the phone is super solid too, but I'm really hoping this battery revolution is the start of a new trend for Android phones. We're finally cresting the hill to true 2 day battery life for base models.

No, the hinge on the previous models left a gap when folded. Some newer folding phones don't have a gap, and it seems like the Z Fold 5 will be joining them.

Nobody's talking about that in these articles, and it's one of the 3 moderator demands to end the protest. It feels puritanical for these news organizations and interviewers to ignore it.

But, I also have fast Internet (Google Fiber), so it's no big deal for me to uninstall today, then download again tomorrow

Right, and this will only become more common as everyone's speeds improve. Sure, you can't hold all of your massive games on your SSD, but it's really not a big deal when installing takes 5 whole minutes. Hopefully adoption of gigabit is quicker than game size expands.

This I feel very strongly about. That would be a miserable experience.

If I've joined 15 groups, I don't want to have to manually click into 15 links every time I visit just to see what's going on.

Doesn’t it seem rather self-centered to presume a single thing about the possibilities of nonhuman intelligences?

It's less about presuming anything about nonhuman intelligence (which certainly exists somewhere in the universe), and more about having experience with human intelligence, and its bad habits and blind spots.

People see things they can't explain. They automatically fill in the gaps. They instinctively gather together to invent answers. They build extensive narratives, and stubbornly cling to them once established.

Whether it's ghosts, aliens, flat earth, or bigfoot, the process of woo and the process of good science are very different. Woo tends to repel the scientific community, and attracts a certain kind of conspiracy minded individual.

And after this 80 year investigation into extraterrestrial life on Earth, it's easy to tell which of those is filling the ranks. Compared to other scientific developments during the same period, that should be an enormous red flag to anyone.

Have you played Dicey Dungeons? It's one of my favorite strategy games. You're rolled a "hand" of dice, and you pair each die with cards to attack, defend, cast spells, etc. So one of your cards may require its die to be an even number to attack with. If you only have an odd numbered dice, you may have another card that raises or lowers the number on your die. Tons of fun little elements, combinations and strategies, and the best kind of luck in games, the one you can manipulate and use to your advantage.

It's basically a roguelike deckbuilder, it has RPG elements, and is just an extremely well designed game that's easy to pick up and play anywhere. It's on all on shops and consoles, including mobile!

And here we are again, another crucial service pulled out from under us. One that's a lot more complicated to replace...

There's a grand canyon between exciting and boring 3rd person stealth shooter for me, with Uncharted 4 and Last of Us 2 being solidly on the good side. Agility between points of cover, verticality, moving in and out of stealth, meaningful weapon/attack choices, interesting AI - I still love the gameplay, but so many different factors need to be excellent to make this well worn genre engaging. And Kay Vess hunkering down behind the same cover for half her fight picking guys off wasn't very encouraging. I hope the fights end of being more dynamic (and the space combat too). I like the dog.

While Junji Ito's focus is usually inventive body horror, I agree that it's usually not this squicky.

Does anyone remember The Enigma of Amigara Fault, a short horror manga occasionally posted on reddit? (If you haven't read it, please do!)

If you enjoyed that, and it was your only experience with Junji Ito, I can't recommend Uzumaki enough. While Ito has some great short story collections (and some may chime in with their favorites here), the stories in Uzumaki are more serialized, following the same characters in a loose narrative, with each chapter giving an inventive new twist to the same horrific theme: uzumaki means "spiral".

I recommend you avoid an image search if you don't want anything spoiled. I just love the way the whole thing escalates towards its insane conclusion, and it's definitely my fav of his many books.
