If you were gonna pay some money for a good phone and a good small tablet, hey why not have both?

I wound up with the Fold 4 512GB version, a case, new earbuds, and the new Galaxy watch all for a total of around $1300 US. Still expensive but the extras helped the price feel not nearly as bad.

Samsung does deals every now and then where they'll give you double trade in value.

I think these phones are meant for three kinds of people:

      • tech enthusiasts
      • people who actually have reasons to use such phone for streamlining their productivity
      • people who love to boast about how expensive their phone is

I'm tech enthusiast, yet I have countless other ways how to spend such money. I could buy myself decent phone, Framework laptop and Steam Deck for two grand!

Now, in fairness, I got a very good deal (half off, so 900USD instead of 1800), and it was unlocked and could just be used with my current carrier. I do foresee using this specific device for a long time now.

I probably wouldn't recommend it if it would cost you 2400 though. That's an insane price for a phone.

What's people's take on folding phones? At a glance the concept strikes me as a gimmick, but maybe I'm just behind the times. Is this a feature that's worth having and will stick around, or are they just one of those awkward half-steps on the way to something genuinely innovative?

I really feel like it's still a gimmick. Where the fold occurs is a nice floppy plastic screen that is easily visible. They are awkward to hold.

I think the general idea once the tech is ironed out the it gives your the best of both worlds in regards to phone form-factor and tablet form-factor.

You can have a device the size of a phone that easily and intuitively expands to the size of a tablet for things that can meaningfully utilize the extra real estate (web browser, media consumption, etc.). I still have yet to see a folding phone though that doesn't feel like a compromised phone [folded closed] experience and a compromised tablet [folded open] experience. I will not be getting one until the phone experience is as good as current normal phones.

With that said, I don't think its a gimmick but I don't think it's a true step towards innovation, at least not yet. I think the technology still needs time to mature and really come into its own.

As someone who was thinking of getting a tablet when it came around time for upgrading my S8, I ended up getting a fold 4 to almost entirely fill both roles. What i do these days is use it as a phone most of the time, but open it up to use as a tablet for reading news, kind of like a newspaper for me haha.

I think the folding feature is gonna stick around for a while. It'll probably be innovated on, but the concept of a phone that fills both roles seems like quite the appeal if they can swing it with the tech to make them cheaper and competitively durable to other phones while eliminating some pain points like the screen fold(which i have absolutely no issue with personally).

I got the LG g8x thinQ a number of years ago for free with a contract. It's a dual screen phone where you can take the dual screen off if you don't wanna use it. I got it because I figured if I didn't like the dual screen, I could just take it off and not use it.

I fell in love with the dual screen and never took it off. It is/was a powerhouse of productivity and multitasking. When that phone reached the end of its life, I was looking for alternatives, but there wasn't really anything out there except for the z fold phones and a Microsoft dual screen foldable. I decided to bite the bullet and get the z fold 4. Thankfully I got a very sizable discount by pre-ordering it and working for an isp that sells cell phones. It was still pricey, but for the amount of time I spend on my phone, I feel like it's more than worth it. I love this phone. It's even better than the lg g8x in almost every conceivable way, its powerful, has a big screen for watching YouTube or playing games. The multitasking ability is crazy, I can basically have a portable pc if I connect it to a wireless keyboard and mouse and connect to my windows 10 server through teamviewer. I hope that foldables like this catch on. I think it was very smart of samsung to come out with a foldable flip phone alongside the foldable tablet style phone to get people into the market for foldable phones. I almost guarantee anyone who gets a foldable phone will not want to go back to a regular phone after.

They're neat concepts but unless we develop foldable glass I can't really see how they'll be much use for phones/tablets.

I won't be able to go back to a normal slab phone unless foldables go away or something way better comes out to replace them. I don't consider it a gimmick or awkward at this point. The feature of folding itself might go away, but the concept of having a big phone that becomes smaller to more easily fit in your pocket isn't something I see disappearing any time soon.

What does it mean to fold flat? Like just because it's vertical instead of gba sp style?

No, the hinge on the previous models left a gap when folded. Some newer folding phones don't have a gap, and it seems like the Z Fold 5 will be joining them.

Presumably, when folded closed the main screen will be flush against itself and no longer have a gap, where previously the hinge and folding screen have had a gap left by the radius of the bend.

Unfortunately still no S Pen in the body but the device is looking good!
    • The first leaked press render for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is here.
    • The render appears to confirm the phone will fold flat, a first for the Z Fold series.
    • While the render shows an S Pen, it does not show a slot for the pen, so don’t get too excited for that.

It seems like a too-big phone, too-small tablet, and too-expensive niche. Are these folding devices that good at being a jack-of-all-trades versus a traditional phone and tablet? Keep in mind, I'm absolutely assuming that one could pick up a separate phone and tablet for the cost of one of these, and that a cost savings isn't the driving factor.

I don't really know how you make a folding screen durable, the coating needs to be soft and flexible.

The first gen had a protective layer that, if peeled off, would kill the display. That has been remedied. I've had my Fold 4 for nearly a year now and the inner screen has been perfect for me the whole time. Linus from LTT has been using a Fold 3 since it came out in nothing but a dbrand skin, and his is fine. He even peeled the protective layer off live on a stream, and it no longer kills the display.

Anyone used a Fold with Samsung DeX for docking with a desktop keyboard/monitor/mouse? Is it adequate for mobile work productivity by comparison with a full-featured laptop?

Goodness knows, I've used a regular format Android phone for just about everything in an emergency (e.g. when the laptop battery gives out after an hour and the airport has no f'ing working power outlets available). Given that I can get to Windows and Linux VMs for anything Android apps can't handle, and do most of my reading on a phone-sized object anyway, the pricing is a lot more compelling if the Fold is really a do-it-all device.

Over the years, I've looked at various "computer in your pocket" devices. Even the venerable Lilliputing site seems to have been taken over with phones and gaming consoles. The Fold 5 might finally be the one object that does it all, now that (most) of the folding display kinks 😉 have been worked out.

All that being said, I loathe the 2 - 3 year phone obsolescence cycle, particularly the late updates from Samsung, and have really despised their proprietary software layer. Any comments on this with the Fold devices?
