I've been playing Cloudpunk (Steam). Fairly relaxed story game about being an illegal delivery driver and occasional taxi driver in a futuristic city -- maybe even only remaining city in the world -- that's so tall that it extends into the clouds. Kinda reminds me of the "Fifth Element," with the hovering or flying cars. As the name suggests, it has a cyberpunk theme, with your typical mass corporate rule and the commentary of the city's large social and economic inequalities.

The story and sidequests aren't the most riveting, and I'm not even sure where the main story is going yet, but it's enough to keep me interested. Especially after playing for about 15hrs so far. The dialog and voice acting are well done and can be quite funny.

It's a beautiful game. The world is 3D, but is done up in a subtle pixel/voxel style. I normally play in third-person (though 1st person is an option), but there's also a cool "side-scroller" mode that really shows off the art that is the city. Coupled with some decent weather effects, it does a great job with immersion.

Hoping to finish it up this week.

If anyone else is considering picking this up on Nintendo Switch: Don't. Not worth it even on sale right now at $10. Draw distance is around 2 feet so instead of that beautiful cyberpunk environment you get an extremely low-FPS world of grey mist that's practically unplayable since buildings sometimes don't even pop in until the same frame you're crashing into them.

No shade to the PC game or on other consoles--it looks great in the videos--but the Switch port (which was not handled by the original developers) is quite trash.

Oof, that's too bad. Appreciate the heads up for others. But you know what it does look great on? Steam Deck!

I used the recent humble bundle to get my hands on the dozens of Cities:Skylines DLCs I didn't have for a bargain price and am playing it again.

The ones everyone generally should have:

        • mass transit: adds nice mass transit options like transit hubs, ferries, blimps, cable cars, and monorails, along with new roads
        • industries: brings out a whole new game system of building industrial areas and meeting demand for goods.

The ones that are good to have:

        • campus: you can make a pretty campus that looks realistic
        • parklife: you can make pretty parks that span arbitrary dimensions and look realistic

The ones you may conditionally want:

        • after dark: gives you bike and bus lanes, which I like
        • snowfall: it gives you streetcars, which I'm biased towards because I like streetcars. Other than streetcars, it gives you winter maps, which I've never tried

The ones that people seem to poo poo a lot:

        • sunset harbor

And Airports also exists and looks amazing, but I don't have it yet since it just got released and is expensive.

Natural disasters also exists, but I don't really want to destroy my city so I never got it.

Green cities also exists but I can't remember what it really does. It might just add some eco-friendly buildings and policy options. It's usually pretty cheap in sales though so I bought it at some point.

Regarding the Snowfall DLC: I absolutely do want to see my cities in winter conditions, but I saw that it had Mixed reviews on Steam, and some of the detractors are saying that this DLC doesn't actually make the city go through seasons through the year. You just get canned winter maps which are in winter all throughout the year. That's disappointing.

Yep, it seemed like the winter maps were perma-winter. Also I now have to heat my homes (on a temperate map, which never gets snow, despite having the DLC). It's an annoying one because it doesn't go deep enough, the winter isn't good enough on its own to justify it, but the DLC also gives streetcars, so I have to have it.

It's too bad you missed this bundle. I had no DLC, and I spent a total of €40 for every DLC and radio (the base bundle included everything other than the 5 latest ones, for which it included a discount coupon).

It's a ton of content, although it doesn't change the mechanics of the base game that much - many alternative types of transportation, new types of buildings that provide health, education, entertainment, land value, etc. I never bought the DLC on its own because I suspected I wouldn't get enough value out of it.

The sale value for everything beyond the base game is currently €257 according to steam.

I just beat Death Stranding. I liked this way more than I thought. Yes, walking the barren landscapes for hours isn't always a high-thrills experience and the story gets very convoluted. But it manages to actually make traversing those kilometers worth of empty landscape a genuine game mechanic. Planning routes, the logistics of which packages to bring along, managing supplies, navigating using the map and compass, using ladders, ropes and even building larger-sized infrastructure like 3D-printed bridges feels great. In a way the game "gets" the purpose of open world environments better than all those cookie-cutter Ubisoft games where it's mostly just empty filler/backdrop. It's the best realization of the genre since Breath of the Wild and I doubt much came close since. Also I gotta say: As confused as the writing is, the acting is on point. It's kinda... well cast and you believe the characters as they bawl their eyes out and deliver their dramatic monologues. This is probably the best acting, the best facial animation capture I've seen in a videogame. Just wow.

I'm also not a huge fan of how David yanked the game off GOG, leaving GOG owners stranded, citing the effort overhead of maintaining the game on a separate minority platform, but it's fine if it's on Epic? Major double standard there.

It wasn't that it was just any separate platform, it's allegedly that GOG requires more overhead than others especially around making the DLC compatible for this game. The low sales on GOG didn't justify the effort. He took it off of GOG to avoid letting that version of the game stagnate.

But most importantly, he's providing all GOG owners with a free DRM-free Steam key replacement.

I don't know how true any of it is, the developer is a bit of a character for sure. But it's a one-man show and his skills are definitely more in the actual game development and less in the company/IP management side.

I finished up Vampire Survivors (all 114 unlocks) which was actually pretty fun to do. Some of it was challenging, and none of it was awful for a pretty casual gamer to do. All in all, this is a pretty good 3 or 4 dollar purchase and the replayability of this is relatively good.

I have gone back to playing some Sunless Skies, which I played for a while and then stopped for no particular reason. It remains a wonderful steampunk cosmic horror RPG where you pilot a flying locomotive through the skies, and is controlled similarly to GTA1. I really enjoy this game an will likely play the previous / next iteration in this franchise.

Hyperbolica is a VR game where you can experience hyperbolic space. The game / story / setting itself is not particularly interesting, but if you have wondered what a non-euclidean space would feel like to move through, it's incredibly interesting. It's also non-VR playable. I can only play for about 20-30 minutes at a time, because it is mindbending.

I've played quite a bit of WINNUKE, a PC game I found here in my free time. It's surprisingly addictive; due in part to the fact that a "long" game lasts no more than 5 minutes or so. This is something you can play when you want to procrastinate, but don't want to check the time to see that 7 hours have passed by.

Aside from that, I've taken up playing the PC game Rust again. Solid game play, just the right level of stress for a game.

Tried out Poinpy, aside from needing a Netflix account, it's pretty fun. It's by the same creator of Downwell, and where Downwell is going down a well, Poinpy is going up, seeking higher ground from a hungry monster who wants fruit juice. You can collect fruits while airborne and combo them together into specific cocktails the monster requests and climb higher into new worlds. It's a lot of fun, and if you have Netflix, it's no additional cost with no ads, and feels really well built around mobile.

I've been getting the MMO itch again but it seems everything today is just not made for me. I like games that place emphasis on the open world over instanced content but that's the minority of games these days.

I tried ESO for a bit because I like TES lore but the open world content is just face roll easy and consequently everything feels meaningless. I've played classic WoW TBC and it's pretty good but I am kind of over it at this point. Unfortunately by the time classic WotLK is out I'll have another kid here so that's also pretty much ruled out.

Anyways I’m going to give return of reckoning a try and see how it goes. I played W:AR back in the day and enjoyed it for a year or so, so hopefully it goes well! It seems like there is a population of 400-700 people playing during the week, which I think is enough for a decent server.
