Finally, FINALLY, this is happening. This game was sorely in need of a re-release with modern graphics/music. It's probably my favorite game of all time, and I'm pleased as punch to get the chance to replay it on the Switch. I'm also psyched for a whole new generation of folks to play this game for the first time.

Super Mario RPG is one of my favorite games from my childhood, but can we stop pretending it was "sorely in need of a re-release with modern graphics/music." It's artstyle and gameplay still holds up perfectly fine today, and you can easily access the game on any device due to emulators.

I would have preferred a sequel. This game didn't need a remake. There was nothing technologically holding back the vision the creators had for the original.

I disagree. I never played SMRPG, I was planning to emulate SNES on my AYN Odin Pro to play it, but no longer plan on doing it. I'll play the remake on Switch. I think the target audience are not people who played it back in the day, but people like me who never experienced it in the first place. We're in the remaster era (same as we had an open world era before) which on one hand gives birth to lazy an cheap "remasters", but on other hand there are also great remasters or even remakes targeted at the new players and I think that is great. Not everybody will enjoy an old version of the game for various reasons (technical, mechanics, just outdated design, etc. -- I'm not talking about SMRPG specifically, but in general). I don't know if that game needed a remake, but I know I needed it to be remade! :)

I don't think SMRPG needs a remake due to technical limitations or failures of the original game. It's more about getting to see what a modern version of the game would look like (the technological gap between then and now being quite wide), as well as the mark of respect, that a game like SMRPG, which has been ignored or overlooked by many in today's day and age, deserves to be remade.

Which, to your point that you would have preferred a sequel, this is how you get a sequel. We've seen what Nintendo has done with the Paper Mario franchise, which was at first a spiritual successor to SMRPG but then sort of devolved into more a watered-down puzzle game than a true RPG. A successful remake of SMRPG may show Nintendo a level of enthusiasm for the old-school RPG format that convinces them to make a genuine sequel for it.

As someone who has only ever played the DS Mario RPG games, how does the OG hold up in terms of mechanics? Is it worth picking up as someone who holds no particular nostalgia for it?

Pretty well. I’d say that Mario RPG is the most, well, RPG of the Mario rpg games. That is, after this title, doing the timed hits became way more important and they scaled the stars way down (you start at 5 hp in paper mario), as well as reduced the complexity of equipment.

Here, you mostly have the snes ff mechanics with timed hits. There’s a full set of equipment sets, numbers are in the hundreds. The game is fairly easy, it still has visible enemies as opposed to random encounters, and I don’t think there’s anything super frustrating about the game. The plot is simple but charming, and the music is great.

At this point I'd probably just wait for the remake, although there's certainly no harm and trying out the original to get a feel for it. It was a late entry on the SNES and it used those in-cartridge expansion chips IIRC, so the graphics hold up well enough.

Also as someone who played this, Paper Mario 1 & 2, as well as a few of the DS RPGs, I'd say this game fits in well with the more modern RPG mario games.

It's hard to separate the nostalgia for me, but it's one of the few JRPGs that I still really enjoy. I've been burnt out from that sort of play style, especially because it just feels so monotonous and immersion breaking when you have random encounters. Super Mario RPG did the great thing that EarthBound and Chrono Trigger did where enemies are on screen and you can choose if you want to engage them or not (obviously with great penalty long term if you aren't experienced enough for the fights you can't avoid). On top of that, the combat is interactive beyond just "select action". Most, if not all, of the attacks and spells have opportunities to boost them for extra damage, or require you to input button commands to maximize damage. So if you like the Mario and Luigi RPG games I think you will like this one.

On top of that, they flesh out a really beautiful and rich world in this game. There are characters beyond the traditional Mario characters that are part of your party and they have their own motivations. The enemy is not Bowser! And some of the levels are just fantastic to play. I would highly recommend it.

Like many here I'm super stoked for this and also super surprised it's actually happening. I'm hoping they don't change the timing of the bonus offense and defense hits too much. Each enemy had it's own feel and that muscle memory is ingrained at this point. I just played this game again earlier this year actially. It's a great one to revisit every few years. I'm curious about the new "chains" and circular meter on the left hand side. Charging up for something I guess. I hope a lot of people who have never played it give it a shot.

Same. This was also one of the first JRPGs I ever beat. First came across it at Blockbuster as a kid and immediately loved it. I think my parents eventually bought the cart for me, but it wasn't until like late middle school/early high school that I replayed it and finally finished it.

Really glad that we're in a sorta renaissance with JRPGs right now. All these remakes and remasters of great games from the "golden age," plus new ones like FF16. Very good time for JRPG fans.

The "Easter Bunny" gave me Super Mario RPG in 1997. I was in second grade. We were staying at a hotel in Utah.

We have a family tradition of hiding easter baskets rather than eggs. I found mine in the closet covered by a coat. When I took the coat off and saw the game, I was ecstatic. I loved the Final Fantasy RPGs and loved the Mario games. I opened the box and read the manual over and over again until we could get back home so I could play it. It instantly became a favorite. The music. The gameplay. The characters. The story. The characters. The charm.

My daughter is now the same age I was when the SNES version came out. We watched the trailer for the remake together yesterday. She said, "That game looks like a lot of fun."

I'm excited to share something from my childhood with her.

Here's hoping SE takes a similar approach for future remakes. It'd be nice to see them take another stab at 3D FF remakes that stays true to the original chibi art (since, obviously, mimicking Amano's illustrative style in a fully fleshed-out game would be nearly impossible).

The original artwork was proportional, but this updated art style feels a bit too squished. I'm sure it'll look fine after playing for a bit, but that's my initial take on it.

SMRPG is one of my all-time favourite games, but I have to say, this trailer’s got me feeling pretty trepidatious.

The original clay aesthetic was a huge part of the charm and it really helped bring the game’s quirks and personality to life. The graphics contraints of the time also meant that they had to get creative with physicality to make their character expressive, and they did it absolutely brilliantly. I’ll admit that I don’t love seeing it in Nintendo’s signature hyper-polished chibi style.

This is the game that inspired the Paper Marios, which carried on SMRPG’s core qualities - absurd humour and distinct style (albeit taking the latter in a different direction). It’s honestly such a shame to see it reskinned in literally the most generic way imaginable.

What I’d normally be most excited for is a re-orchestrated soundtrack, because the original slaps. Honestly, though, I found the few bits they played in the trailer a little uninspired (and you have to assume they’re showcasing their best work). Don’t get me wrong - I liked them! But nostalgically, not because of anything that wasn’t there before.

I don’t know, you could just feel how much fun the original creators had making the game when you played it, and I’m afraid of this revival simply being chosen as the next logical selection within a corporate trend rather than being born out of any love for the game, because let’s face it, this is the only one we’re ever gonna get.

Forgive my incoherence here, because I don't know how to phrase this while disagreeing with your take on the music, but the message I mean to convey is something like "maybe this small sample size of music just isn't the best and the rest will be fine" without actually saying that since it would be based on a premise of agreeing with you, but anyway, idk, hopefully the rest will satisfy you more.

I've generally liked Yoko Shimomura's recent stuff too so I have faith in her and liked what I heard in the trailer.

I found the art style so jarring that it put me on the defensive, which probably had more of an impact on my perception than I’d like to admit. I just feel protective of all of the things that I loved in the SNES version, and it feels like I’ve been waiting for this remake my entire adult life.

In any case, we’ll have to wait and see, but you’ve given me something to be hopeful for.

The charm this game has is through the roof, and I really feel like it gave Bowser the character he never really had before -- making him a bit more of a lovable bad guy as opposed to just the guy who kidnapped the princess.
