What digital card games are you playing or excited for?
I've been wanting a new card game to sink my teeth into. There's so many though! I plan on trying them all out more or less, but was curious to hear what others are playing, if anything new was on the horizon, and what opinions were!
I've played MtG Arena, Pokemon TCG Live, Yugioh Master Duel, Legends of Runeterra, and KARDS.
I liked them all to varying degrees, but still wanna seek out others before I start leaning in to one. Warhammer also has a digital ccg coming out called Warpforged. I liked the demo, but I don't think it has a release date :(
Anyways, what do y'all think I should try and play?
Not sure if it's what you're looking for, but Slay the Spire is fantastic. The strategy is deep and it requires a lot of thinking and you unlock new possible cards as you go, but it's not a TCG. Instead it's a rougelike deck builder where you have to balance your desire for damage, health, combat rewards and interesting events as you climb higher and higher to... slay the spire?
It's a lot of fun, though, and while RNG can be a pain, the feeling you get from a great run is hard to match! Plus, it's on PC, console, and mobile, so you can scratch your itch whenever you like :)
+1 for slay the spire. I like card games but haven't been previously exposed to roguelikes. I found it really hard at first, and for longer than I'm willing to admit. I kept with it out of stubbornness and it was worth it. Very satisfying game
Unlocking new cards really helps with deck synergy too.
Slay the Spire is extraordinary and I adore it. Have you played the Downfall expansion?
I really loved Inscryption. It's a bit MtG and a bit Pokemon TCG, plus there's a much more involved story going on underneath the very competent card game. It's asymmetric and played Player/Dungeon Master style, and the game has many spins on the core mechanic hidden within it.
Seconded. It's impressive how it manages to make retro-graphics so dark and brooding.
I really need to finish this. I got busy and now I feel like I just need to start the whole thing over.
Inscryption is incredible, though you definitely want to avoid spoilers with it. The atmosphere is top-notch, and it hooked me in immediately. There was a bonus "Kaycee's Mod" endless mode added in an update that adds some replayability, though I haven't played much of it.
It just came out on PS+ :D, I've installed it, heard so many great things. Going in blind too which I heard is very recommended.
I got sucked into Marvel Snap for the past 8 months, but recently stopped playing due to a lack of progression and gate-keeping of new cards that made things feel pay-to-win. Game economy aside, I think Ben Brode did a remarkable job designing a card game that's so simple to learn, but with good depth, simultaneous turns, and a game board compelling enough to spectate. A part of me is a little sad the devs prioritized the whales over the dolphins and F2P core, but such is their choice.
From the card genre, I'm currently enjoying a solitaire-style game by the name of Card Crawl on mobile. The games are typically five minutes long and strike the right difficulty balance -- I recommend it if you're looking for something casual on the side.
The same dev also has some other interesting solitaire-style games that are worth checking out, with his newest title Geo Gods set to release later this month -- the art looks fantastic!
I watched the trailer for Geo Gods and it looks right up my alley. The art style is lovely. I'll give Card Crawl a peek as well.
It's been out for a while but I absolutely loved "fights in tight spaces." A roguelike deck builder portraying John Wick style martial arts. Your cards represent different moves: attacking, dodging, blocking, etc.
Theres a good mix of tactical thinking as you use you hand of cards to outmanuover your enemies and stay alive. Then the higher level strategy of building your deck with cards that work well together, but aren't so over specialized that you can't adapt to different enemies and situations.
Card City Nights is a fun little game, taking place in a city where everyone is insanely hooked on some trading-card game. The mechanics are original and it has a pretty neat art style.
Went to look it up on Youtube to see what the game play looks like and got a wonderful blast from the past.

YES! Anything Ludosity makes is great, but Card City Nights is something special! The soundtrack is a mix of hip hop and jazz, which blend quite well, giving the game a laid-back urban feel. It's mechanically simple, yet contains a decent amount of strategy. I'd give it a solid 8/10.
I'm mostly looking for PvP stuff, but this looks extremely charming. I've wishlisted it, thanks for the suggestion :)
I'm waiting for Pixel Tactics. Haven't tried the Warpforged demo but I've got my eye on that one too. I like MtG Arena and Pokemon but I'm just not that into it anymore right now. I'd like to play Cardfight Vanguard but I'm not paying $70.
I still can't believe Cardfight Vanguard chose the monetization method they did. $70 up front and you STILL have to buy packs right?
I play 2 card games on a daily basis. One that was mentioned already is Marvel SNAP and I mostly agree with what Mezze said in their post about it.
The other is Legends of Runeterra, primarily the Path of Champions game mode. It's set in the League of Legends universe, but you don't need any knowledge from that game to play this one. It has standard modes where you can collect cards and build decks to play against other players. The Path of Champions is a mode where you pick a champion and use their base deck to play through an adventure. As you progress through the adventure, you can add cards to your deck and abilities that expand the way your deck works making each run fairly different. The game has cosmetics and an occasional in-game event with a battle pass, but it is perfectly enjoyable without putting any money into it.
Very on board with both these suggestions. I always forget about Marvel SNAP. Although, I think it would be a side game to anything I picked and not my main time sink.
ty!
Vault of the Void is a mashup of hearthstone and slay the spire you might enjoy.
Also something I haven't seen mentioned yet is using Tabletop Simulator to play any game that doesn't have a digital version. It takes a bit more work and you have to find someone to play with, but it's a decent alternative.
I've been playing The Lord of the Rings Adventure Card Game in coop with a buddy. We sought it out specifically for coop functionality. There game is built as a campaign going through a story. The story is simply presented as text with a voiceover, which is fair enough but a bit awkward in coop. The gameplay is fun, I like the equipment system and the way the game design forces you to have a variety of cards in your deck.
The mechanics can be a bit obtuse at times. We played a card that had a bonus against hazards, but we quickly found out that not many objectives are technically classified as hazards, making the card kinda useless. We're also worrying about the longevity of the game, given that there's only a few campaigns to do.
This looks extremely appealing and is on a deep sale right now. If I can find a buddy who wants to grab a copy then I'll check it out! Mainly looking for PvP but honestly, any card game where I can spend time with real people will do.
Marvel Snap has me crazy addicted. Before that, I was playing Hearthstone Battlegrounds every day, but once I picked up Marvel Snap, I haven't touched BG. Came so close to hitting infinity this season but couldn't cross the finish line
I kind of feel that even though Blizzard is incapable of developing good content anymore, Hearthstone still holds up. They haven't really deviated from an established formula that works for the game imo.
Now to go wash my mouth out.
I LOVE HS Battlegrounds they do a really good job of it. But better than that was Storybook Brawl. It just felt like a better game, I enjoyed it more. Until the designer sold it to an NFT guy and he ran it into the ground finally shutting off the servers a couple months ago.
The fantasy theme and easy to learn nature of the game really speaks to me. I'm definitely going to give it a try, any limited modes especially.
My favorite one which hasn't been mentioned yet (I think) is Eternal (https://www.direwolfdigital.com/eternal/). Extremely F2P friendly and lots of fun. It feels to me like if MtG had been created as a digital CCG from the ground up, and minus the extreme greediness.
I played the demo of Cross Blitz on Steam and I am looking forward to the full release:
The demo is still available until July 10th.
Seems a bit more forgiving than Wildfrost.
It is not PvP though, I prefer offline games.
I really enjoy Gods Unchained where the cards are all on the Ethereum network. It's a practical use of Blockchain technology but even more it's really fun.
