Build a pretty spawn area for Tildes' Minecraft server!
We've had a pretty awesome Minecraft server for about a week now (tildes.nore.gg
). But our spawn area has been lacking (and unavailable for player modification).
If you're a creative player we could use your help!
How to get access
If you already play on Tildes SMP then you can connect directly to tildes.nore.gg:25566
right now! If you gained access to our SMP server after this post went live you'll have to ask either @Bauke or myself for whitelist access.
Rules
- Play nice! You're all working on the spawn area together.
- Please tag your work if you think it's likely someone will have conflicting plans so you can be contacted.
- Build assuming a player will spawn in right on 0, 0 facing North.
Somewhat offtopic, but a little minecraft server admin tip that I personally enjoy using: You can use an SRV record to point a domain like
creative.tildes.nore.gg
to a non-standard port :) https://www.mcmiddleearth.com/community/wiki/setting-up-a-srv-record/Thanks! Didn’t know about that.
Edit: @Noox came and fixed it. Apparently I needed to use an empty bucket to soak up the water.
Hopefully someone can come fix the mess I've made. Thankfully I didn't ruin any of the actual creative stuff near spawn, just messing around the carrot patch at 26,68,-58. I was trying to pick a carrot but didn't know blocks instantly disappeared when touched in Creative mode.
As I attempted to put the dirt back and replant the carrots, then I used a Water Bucket once, and instantly caused a big flood of that corner of the carrots. I didn't expect this giant floating water spout to appear. Sorry!
I've never played minecraft and am not playing with you all, but I am keeping abreast of what I can through these threads. For some reason your post brought me so much laughter. I can picture it all! Thank you :)
I just imagined them causing chaos in a cartoonish/comedic way, like holding a water bucket, slipping and accidentally ruining an entire farm. :D
We've all been there ;) luckily it was water and not magma... Speaking from experience...
Incredible. Whoever helped build this must be exceptionally talented and creative....
Jokes aside, @teaearlgraycold come take a look :)!
I’m out and about but can check it out later tonight!
Edit: Looks amazing!
Server crashed for mysterious reasons. It's back up. I'll pull the final version in a day or so.
Fixed! Accidentally doubled the spawn protection radius.
Welp, guess I'll be postponing my house in town again :p
So this is a separate instace of the server is what I'm guessing? Just curious, since you need to add a port to the address.
Yup. Just a copy of the world file!
I'd love to take a crack at it, but I'll probably have to do it after MCC is over today. It'll be starting at 3pm est.
Although, I might try to build while watching (ImpulseSV). I don't exactly know what I'll build yet. Do we get multiple tries, or just 1?
The plan's just to do this event for the weekend and commit to the end result for a while.
I joined to look into making some trains but it turns out I don't need to.

How is Minecraft on the deck? Are the controls decent ?
There are some decent button mappings available.
Ooh, on the Steam Deck? Neat!
I haven't played it in a long time but I do feel like doing something creative. But can I join this server console (Xbox)?
That's a complicated question. Out of the box without jumping through any hoops? No. This is a Minecraft Java server, and Xbox has Minecraft Bedrock (yes, there are 2 entirely different versions of Minecraft, one made with Java for PC/Mac/Linux, and one made with C++ for console/mobile/PC, and they don't officially have crossplay between versions).
BUT, if you own Minecraft Java, you can follow this comment to set up playing the server on your Xbox: https://tildes.net/~games/18qt/tildes_minecraft_server_launch_java_edition_smp#comment-9xko At that point though, if you already have Minecraft Java, probably just play from your desktop or laptop, unless you don't have one anymore.
Nice! Looking forward to jumping in later.
Anyone used Minetest much? I find it runs much better on my computer and seems easier to mod.
I've used Minetest a little, and as the devs themselves say, "it's more of a mod platform than an actual game". Hell, just use Minetest's menu to get a sense of how little they care about the experience. And they pay as little attention to getting any other minor details right as they do to getting the menu details right.
It's a damn shame, because I'm not a fan of jumping Microsoft's hoops now they've bought Mojang, but Minecraft is the better game. Things as simple as the feedback texture when punching trees (it feels completely disconnected from the punching/mining animation in Minetest), and how if you open up the game for the first time and hit the "PLAY GAME" button, it errors "no world created or selected!" instead of opening the create-world menu (or even "no world created or selected! create new map? Y/N"). I bring these up because any gamedev worth their salt will notice them within 2 minutes of launching the game, so the obvious conclusion is that nobody is even trying to polish the base game).
Most Minetest apologists will say something like "well of course it's not a good game, it's up to the modders to make the game" except that's a fundamentally flawed idea that misunderstands how a modding scene works. All the biggest modding scenes are around good games (Minecraft, Skyrim, Half Life), and that's no coincidence - modders come for the game and create modifications/expansions within the spirit of the game, so to speak. The problem with Minetest is that it's basically a platform for Minecraft mods, except Minecraft already exists, is more Minecrafty, and is perfectly moddable already. In fact, Minecraft is already a better Minecraft experience, so why should anyone care about Minetest?
People care about Minetest for one of two reasons: performance, and the GPL. The GPL crowd are niche as heck (I say that as one of them), and the performance people can just go play Bedrock Edition.
I check back on Minetest (and prospective forks) every so often, but I hold no hope that it'll ever be a worthwhile game.
I don't mean to be a rude, but this is the third post about a Tildes Minecraft server, which is not something I'm interested since I don't care for playing the game in that way. Can we get a tag for this so that I can filter these out without having to filter out all things tagged "minecraft"?
I believe it's the second post.
I'll add a common tag.
Technically yes, but there was another one asking for interest in creating it that I included.
Thank you very much.
