Games similar to Prototype?
So I recently tried to replay Prototype on PC, only to learn that it's essentially incompatible with modern hardware and crashes instantly past the main menu.
I've tried searching other posts on other sites and most people recommend super hero games and Infamous. Well, I don't have a PS, so Infamous is off the table, and super hero games really are not the same. Call me immature, but if I can't massacre civilians in my power fantasy game, it's not really like Prototype.
I've seen pretty much all the AAA games of past and present that get recommended, but I'm wondering if there are any Indie games that aren't at the forefront that I've missed.
You could give Saints Row 3 and 4 a shot. They're older, but not old per se; a similar age as Prototype. Far less serious, but still they might scratch that itch.
They're also dirt cheap.
The Insomniac Spiderman games should scratch that itch really well if you haven't played them yet. I'm told the Infinity Ward ones are also good but I haven't played them to give you an opinion on them. I know you didn't want superhero games, but Spiderman really is on another level.
Destroy all humans and maneater kinda fit the bill i think. Destroy all humans has a pretty shit story but thankfully the gameplay is pretty good and easily carries the game. Maneater is one of my favorite games in general because it isn't really structured like your normal open world game, you just have a bunch of objectives around the map with little to no explanation other than "eat the rich" and documentary announcer randomly commenting on your actions while you evolve your shark.
A warning about Maneater, check online for solutions to the "No Save" problem before you put in several hours only to discover that your progress was not saved.
Not sure if the issue exists only in the Epic Store version.
I second these recommendations!
The Destroy All Humans games (there were two, and were recently remade) are cartoonish sandbox games that let you be an alien invader as if you were a campy old 1950s style scifi movie. You can go around causing all kinds of mayhem, popping brains out of heads and leveling whole buildings with death rays.
And Maneater was far more enjoyable than I expected of its extremely simple premise: you're a shark, you eat people. It's not a large game, but I easily got a few dozen hours of playtime out of it. Seriously, try this one out. How often do you get to play as a killer shark?
Check out Carrion. It's an indie 2D game that has a similar concept.
I have not played Prototype, but from the description on Steam, I think you might enjoy Control if you have not already played it. It's basically the game that got me back into PC gaming.
I really enjoyed Control, but it's really nothing like Prototype. Prototype is a power-fantasy GTA game, where you run up skyscrapers and karate kick helicopters and defeat legions of army men. Control is a very cool and fun game with some cool weird lore, but plays much more like a traditional 3rd person FPS with some neat powers
Sorry if it's a dumb recommendation, but prototype 2? It's still got all the morally questionable civilian slaughtering you could want, and the crazy cool powers. The story is about the same level of campy imo
I bought it and refunded it years ago, but I don't remember why I did that.
This may not be a fix for you but I found it works with Steam Deck and haven't found a flaw yet.
So, maybe install Linux on a secondary drive if you want that Prototype goodness?
I did finally get the pc version of prototype playable by disabling hyperthreading in the BIOS. Not really a long term solution because you don't want to leave that off, but to spend a day or two replaying an old classic it's at least workable.
I actually found an easier way (assuming you own it through Steam). Open task manager, right click on Steam in processes, and either click Set Affinity or Details, (then right click and Set Affinity), set active cores to 0-3. Super easy and you can switch it on and off whenever you wanna load it up.
I had tried that originally and couldn't get it to work, but that was on different hardware so maybe I'll try that again if I ever go back to it.
Just Cause 2 and 3? It scratches the blow everything up as a near superhero itch. 3 has DLC that makes you basically iron man.
This can be fixed, along with a number of other issues. Consult the PC Gaming Wiki.
The PC port is notoriously shitty however (for example, it straight up does not support stereo sound, only 5.1 surround). If you have an Xbox 360 or a PS3 lying around, it may be worth playing it there instead.
Try these fixes, one of them worked for my friend: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kf9qtIdzndE
