The idea builds on the PlayStation Portal, an 8-inch handheld device Sony released in 2023 that allows users to play PS5 games by streaming them over the internet.
I don't see how it can be a Switch rival at all.
Tokyo-based Sony initially had intended for it to function as a standalone device like Valve Corp.’s Steam Deck, the people said.
But they decided to abandon this idea it seems.. Or maybe there will be small list of games that can be played without streaming? But, again, we have mobile phones for it..
Upd: looks like it will be portable console with streaming via internet. Thats why I think it can't be rival of Switch because in a sense Switch is "really" portable, i.e. no streaming, no requirements for good internet speed and latency apart from multiplayer games.

Sony Group Corp. is in the early stages of developing a portable console that would play its PlayStation 5 games on the move.

What are you confused by? That is what they’re trying to do, per the Bloomberg article, but it will be standalone (if it ever exists). No wifi or streaming needed. Also per the article.

The PS Portal already exists, there wouldn't need to be a reason to report on them reportedly working on a device that does exactly what the PS Portal does.

Given the PSP was arguably a bit ahead of its time, I could see sony pulling this off. I wouldn't bet on it though.
The PS Vita is probably still my favorite handheld console, but because of how they handled that I no longer trust Sony enough that I would ever buy into anything new they put out.

However, as much as I love my Steam Deck, it's just so bulky compared to the PSP and Vita. Obviously the former is way more power than the latter two, but man, I would kill for a handheld that's smaller, even if it loses some of that power.
This is my thing. I've had a Deck since June 2022 and while I love it, I still keep my smaller handhelds for sheer portability. I had been using my Vita and Miyoo Mini interchangeably for several...
This is my thing. I've had a Deck since June 2022 and while I love it, I still keep my smaller handhelds for sheer portability. I had been using my Vita and Miyoo Mini interchangeably for several years, but I've just replaced both with an Anbernic 405m.
It's certainly lacking in power over the Deck, but I love the fact that I can just toss it in my pocket and be done. I miss my PC games, but when I'm out and about, I'll make due with only thousands of emulated titles instead.

What happened is that consoles standardized enough to all run PC hardware, (save the switch which uses mobile phone hardware) and pc hardware got efficient enough that you could fit it into a small form factor, stick some controller buttons, grips, display and a battery on it, and call it a portable, rather than maintaining various console architectures that you’re always expecting to run the newest latest best on.

And now they are thinking of competing with valve 10 years too late.
Like what really happened? I can understand a Vita 2 being too much of an investment for many reasons, but classic emulations been a thing for a while. They took the time for a cloud streaming portal, but why make it pure streaming instead of at the very least throwing some vita-esque hardware in it and letting it be able to play some classic games too? I don't particularly like the form factor, but it undeniably looks comfortable to play pretty much all PS1/PS2/PSP and 99% of PSV games on.
(and yea, I know about the PS classic, but that was more of a novelty than something meant to be a general gaming console)
It would increase costs and thus take away from its niche. The PS portal is a huge success commercially so you can hardly blame them for releasing it as is.

That aside, the portal being their follow up over a decade later doesn't give me a lot of confidence this PS5 portable will ever see the light of day. Even a decade after steam deck, I don't think it'll be easy to get that at a steam deck cost. And with the portal they clearly didn't want to try to begin with.

I don’t see any reason to question.

It’s a good product in a solid niche.
So was the Vita. I long learned that success is not always directly correlated to quality.
Regardless, my main point wasn't to harp on the Portal, it is what it is and I paid 5x as much for a much more versatile machine when I didn't like what it was offering. I'm an outlier among an outlier. It's more to cast my doubts on them not somehow cheapening out on this PS5 portable, if it launches at all.

That's how I read it too, also It looks like the article is saying that they will use the Portal as base to built this new thing.

Im confused regarding what I missread in article per your previous comment.

That said, I'm otherwise inclined to agree.
That era of random proprietary formats really was peak Sony. Fortunately they've ported most popular games on there to other platforms.

Edit: just realized you may not be privvy to the handheld emulation scene which has been around a few years now, so here's a video that mentions some of the most recent ones.
