Does else anyone play TimeGuessr? It's a fun game that challenges your sleuthing abilities in images for clues on language, flags, clothing styles, etc and where to place the image on the world.

I do now! Can you zoom in on the map without a touch screen? Am I just having a dumb? I'm absolutely looking things up, but that's fun for me trying to find clues

I've been enjoying it for the last week or so. My best score was just over 50k but some of the images I got were pretty lucky. One of them was one I could have gotten to the hour, and I was within 20m, so I got a perfect score, which was lucky (a picture of the car a few moments after JFK was shot). Another had the address on a sign.
I enjoy this significantly more than the one that used to be popular that was purely based on maps.
Used to be? GeoGuessr is still pretty damn popular, if the views on some of the pro/semi-pro player's YouTube channels is anything to go by. E.g. RAINBOLT, GeoWizard, zi8gzag, and...

Used to be? GeoGuessr is still pretty damn popular, if the views on some of the pro/semi-pro player's YouTube channels is anything to go by. E.g. RAINBOLT, GeoWizard, zi8gzag, and JackSucksAtGeography still get hundreds of thousands of views per video. And I still play GeoGuessr occasionally as well, and rarely have to wait long for a multiplayer match whenever I do. I also enjoy TimeGuessr, travle, and Sporcle too, but GeoGeussr is still my fav.
Ah yeah, fair enough. It definitely did lose some of its virality once they started charging for it. OpenGuessr is a decent free alternative though, but it doesn't have multiplayer.

I actually pay for it. A buddy and I play pretty regularly. I'm not amazing (Gold 2), but I always have fun. It's totally worth the cost for me and it's justifiable to charge for.

This is kind of fun! It's just really slow. Maybe hug of death, API is super slow and sometimes the images don't load for me. But was fun none the less?

Cool concept but the year slider is not very obvious nor easy to use on mobile :/ An input box or list would maybe be easier. Also I despise the UI of any embedded map, but this isn't the worst...

Also I despise the UI of any embedded map, but this isn't the worst I've used. Being able to tap on the image and flip back and forth is great, so long as you don't have clumsy fingers that pinch the wrong places lol
Alright, I played it once and got 35k, feels like it's only going downhill from here. In my defense, how could I tell that was the flag of Iceland? In black and white it looked like that of a...

In my defense, how could I tell that was the flag of Iceland? In black and white it looked like that of a scandinavian country!
May I take a moment to note that their cookie/legitimate interest banner is borderline cancer because of how many things I have to toggle if I don't want to accept the "legitimate interests"?

It isn't even malicious compliance, but straight up illegal. Non-essential cookies have to be disabled by default, and opting out of them has to be as easy as opting in.

Are you using ClearURLs? It's been messing with sites since yesterday afternoon. I had to disable it to get this to work, along with a number of other sites recently (e.g. Office 365, Best Buy).

Glad I could help, that was messing with me for a bit since it started mid-workday and broke work sites for me. They're supposed to be updating it soon according to their GitHub to version 1.27.3...

Does the spirit of this game assume players are researching their guess in another tab, trying to find matching buildings on Street View, searching for roads and business names, that sort of thing? Or is the intent more that you put in a good-faith guess based on your existing knowledge and assumptions, and using external sources is considered cheating?
I'm enjoying it either way but not really sure how it's meant to be played.
Edit: LOL, I thought I had a pretty good guess of Seoul in 1989 for this pic. Turns out that's Pyongyang in 2010, oof. Including DPRK pics in the set is unfair!
I guess you can play as you like, but I like the challenge of trying to do it without any other research topics. It's a good test of the limits of my cultural, technological, and geographic...

Scrolling up and down on the mouse works for me
I could pan, but not zoom, I'll try again tomorrow!

It's still popular, but not quite the viral "everybody is doing it" as it was for a while. It definitely took a dip when it went pay to play.

They have a world cup. It's pretty fun to watch at the world level (hah).

I'm not getting one with adblock off, maybe it's regional?

In the words of a dubiously attributed Einstein quote, I am the fish and this is my tree.
Fun game! But I couldn't get it working in Firefox. Anyone else got it working with the fox?
I did other than not being able to zoom on the map, but that was probably user error. Possibly an adblocking setting is hitting something?
Maybe. What happens when I click the "Play" button is I can see the map in the background reloading, but the "game settings" prompt doesn't disappear.
Interestingly I turned off ublock and had no issues (not even the cookie pop-up)
I don't think I can troubleshoot, I hope someone can!
It works in Firefox on my personal computer, but not my computer at work. Weird.
I'm sure it's either my privacy settings or one of my extensions causing it. Just happy to see this isn't one of those developers who completely ignore Firefox users. :-)
Worked for me without issue and multiple privacy and adblock related add-ons.
I have no issues running it in Firefox with ublock and privacy badger.

You were right! ClearURLs was causing the issue. Thanks. :-)
