Listen, I absolutely adore Halo CE. It singlehandedly sold me on the Xbox as a platform and I've bought every one since. But this will be the 5th time they've sold us the same game.
M$ also announced a new Gears of War game...except it's not new. It's just them trying to sell us Gears of War 1 for what I believe is the 4th time now. Yes, Gears 1 was nearly as important for xbox as Halo CE but for fuck sake microsoft this is pathetic. Not only that but every single rerelease of Gears 1 has been objectively worse than the original because they don't give us the OG Warzone multiplayer mode and instead they force a team deathmatch with respawns onto maps that were never designed for it.

Yeah, I tried to be very neutral in my summary comment here, but it's definitely getting old at this point. I actually think a Resident-Evil style remake of CE, in isolation, is a great idea. It's easily aged the worst of the original games. There's a good opportunity there to update it for a new generation and refresh it for the old generation. But the endless, soulless mining of studios' back catalogs for nostalgia bait and easy profit without expending creative energy is wearing on me.
There was CE: Anniversary in 2011 - it came out separately before MCC, it was H2A that launched as part of MCC. Other than that though, I'm not sure what they're referring to. Maybe Custom Edition...

I think graphic fidelity shouldn't be the sole reason to warrant a remake. There is a certain style that comes with old games. If you cannot play them because "lol it looks old", please look at all the retro-inspired 8bit games that reach critical mass, Terraria selling over 10million copies, Shovel Knight also doing incredibly well. If you want to play Halo CE, play Halo CE.
To sidestep games a little bit, the same can be said for movies. There was absolutely no reason to remake the Lion King or Lilo and Stitch (and a lot of other movies).
My take is that investors and board directors just want safe investments because they know there is a market that appreciates a new product for that IP. As long as people purchase it, they will keep doing this.
It kills creativity and originality and I think we lose something as humanity for it. Maybe I'm becoming an old whiny bitch at this point, and I'm certainly not saying "back in my day things used to be better". But there is something to be said against constantly rehashing, rereleasing, remasters, rebooting and regurgitating barely aged products, give them a new lick of paint and rake in billions and claim victory.
I don't think it is in this case? This isn't a remaster, it's a pretty thorough reworking of the game for modern day. Based on what they've shown, there is a lot of new stuff and I expect there...

I don't think it is in this case? This isn't a remaster, it's a pretty thorough reworking of the game for modern day. Based on what they've shown, there is a lot of new stuff and I expect there will be a lot of very different stuff as well. I don't know if I'll bother buying it yet, but the idea of playing Combat Evolved without it feeling like a floaty mess is appealing to me (speaking as someone who put dozens of hours into the original back in the early 2000s). I do want to play CE again, but it really does not feel good to me after getting used to 25 years worth of improvement in game design and controls.
To be clear though, I think I agree with most of what you wrote. Only pointing out that this isn't just another new coat of paint.
You make a good point and I can see how my view is a little one-sided. I think I can agree that not everything would fall under this remaster trap. I think the main point I wanted to get across...

I'm still open to being won over but my expectations from Microsoft/343/Halo Studios are at rock bottom.
Also, it's not in this video but I believe the video showing parts of the new prequel missions showed what seems like a possibly significant alteration to the Master Chief's timeline.

I played hundreds of hours of Halo 2, thousands of hours of Halo 3, and hundreds of hours of Reach. I don’t remember 4 at all and the multiplayer on MCC wasn’t as fun as it should’ve been. I was a 10 sensitivity, bumper jumping, 50 in Swat and Snipes on 3. That was and probably forever will be “the” FPS for game for me.
Infinite had problems but it’s the most I played a game since 3 / Reach.
But the franchise is still sus and I have no hope for any games as good as Halo 3 (or 2 if you’re into 2 more than 3). I only played Infinite a few years after release because I had lots of spare time and it was on Game Pass.
All of that is a lot of text to say: I used to be really into the franchise and I’m sort of over it. Unfortunately.
You sound just like me. I spent a good chunk of my life in Halo 3 multiplayer. I thought Infinite was a good start but there were too many little changes that disrupted things. No friendly fire,...

I thought Infinite was a good start but there were too many little changes that disrupted things.
No friendly fire, no collision with teammates, vehicles being made out of paper, vehicle handling still feeling off, the weird vehicle drop in system, map design forcing vehicles into tight corridors.
The whole launch of Infinite was just weird. It was like they were surprised by their own release and didn't have any plans ready for post launch stuff. The whole thing about "the UI doesn't support additional game modes" or whatever it was they said was wild.

5th? Original, MCC, and this one, what am I missing?

Xbox release
PC release
Anniversary remaster
MCC
Now this
Don’t forget the Mac release! My first copy of CE was for Mac, sunk tons of hours into it on a 2008 MacBook
Oh yeah, I forgot it did actually release on Mac too.
Yes, exactly. Halo PC was a separate release with its own unique content.
I want to count the MCC PC release as a separate line item, solely because they actually went back and fixed 99% of the issues the Xbox MCC version of Halo 1 inherited from Anniversary and the Gearbox PC port. This was no small technical feat.
Hell is being a game dev trapped in a cycle of remaking halo ce
"Guys? I don't think we actually survived that crash."
Hahaha glad theres already a comic for it

M$ is a piece of Internet speak that I hope never ever goes away

@mycketforvirrad, I think the "343 studios" tag should be changed. I get adding the "Bungie" one since they made the original, but "343 studios" isn't correct; the new company's name was "343 Industries" but it's not even that anymore, it's just "Halo Studios".
Fixed it for both posts.
