Where do you go for humor?
What sites do you frequent for humorous writing? I guess that might be an online magazine, a blog, Youtube channel, comic, or a podcast—but foremost, I'm looking to read well-written, funny prose.
Most of the comedy I consume either comes in the form of stand-up, tv shows, movies, or youtube videos, but whenever I am in the mood for written material there are a few political satire sites I check out:
The Onion
The Nib
The Beaverton
The Hard Times
p.s. Even though you didn't mention books, a few of my favorite series are also chocked full of wonderful comedic prose as well; The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, & Discworld. Both of which you should definitely read if you haven't already.
I still go to Cracked. They're not as good as they were at their peak, but they're still quite funny.
Maybe I shouldn't be wary of returning to Cracked.
Writing I'm not sure about, but I love browsing Dutch language memes on /r/ik_ihe on reddit. Outside of that I also like Linux memes, surreal memes, etc.
Those random super short youtube videos that make you go "???" are also hilarious to me, though they're tough to find.
The two subredfits that I use for specifically that are /r/youtubehaiku and /r/youtubehaikuclassic
Wow, thanks!
As someone who is learning Dutch, what does "ihe" mean?
I don't speak Dutch but having visited /r/yo_elvr before, it's probably an acronym for "in real life" in Dutch. A quick trip to deepl translate tells me that would likely be "in het echt".
EDIT: Not sure I explained that very well. /r/me_irl -> "me in real life" -> "ik in het echt" (or something?) -> /r/ik_ihe
ik_ihe = me_irl.
Ik = me.
Ihe = in real life (in het echt).
Perhaps you'd like the Short 'n' Sweet playlist.
Nice, thanks!
Not quite a podcast, but here are some suggestions for well written audio comedy.
John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme This is a sketch comedy show written by John Finnemore. He's previously written for David Mitchell. I enjoy this because he manages to be funny without punching down.
The Pin. Another sketch show. They have a BBC Radio 4 series, but I'm linking to youtube because these are short and available. I love them because their setups are perfect. The Pin on Mr Box Here's a Twitter thread of Zoom sketches they did
Bleak Expectations A parody of Dickens. It's funnier than I make it sound, and it has Anthony Head (Rupert Giles in Buffy) as a baddie and he's great. Here's the first episode on YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzqluNyd7aQ
Cabin Pressure is a sitcom about a tiny chartered airline company. It has a small but great cast (for example, Benedict Cumberbatch as he's just about to become famous). And it's just delightful - a really nice feel-good comedy. It developed a strong audience fan base.
Bigipedia This is described as a parody of Wikipedia, but that's misleading. It's so much more than that. There are elements of horror comedy ("pandoratane, the most adhesive substance known to man" is a good example of this). It's hard to find, but is available on Archive here
I’ve been watching a lot of Genuine Jerks on YouTube lately. This is their most popular video, but their other videos with far less views are also great.
Jreg for a twisted permutation of political humor and what I call memetic sadness.
YouTube reccomendations for community tab posts.
r/historymemes for the named purpose
r/bootoobig for rhyming memes
r/PoliticalCompassMemes, r/wojakcompass and r/polcompmemes for shock value memes and big brain takes from right-wingers I find amusing but would never touch if I was any minority group, alongside the occasional moment of self-awareness/anti-conservatism.
OldMemeArchive technically counts when it's funny but it's more of an exhibit of the early 2010s than anything else.
Not even a minority, but... yeah PCM is not a great place.
