Tildes Video Thread
So, quite a few people don't like/watch video content, and don't like seeing the homepage filled with videos. Let's try something new, see if it sticks.
What are the best videos you have watched this past week/fortnight?
"i miss the old idubbbz"
For those who don't know, iDubbbzTV made a lot of edgy content, and built his career on it. He doesn't accept the term edgy, going to say it was "cruel," and basically decided after years of growth that just changing his direction as a creator wasn't enough so he decided to confront his past. He explains where he was at the time of his earlier content and how he grew, while also claiming full responsibility for everything. He is unlisting his videos so they don't spread as easily.
This was my original attempt at a comment, but turned into how I related to the video, so I decided to just say my piece. I'm not sure how many people know who idubbbztv is, but at least for when I was at a certain stage of life I watched content made by people who interacted with him, and remember his content being somewhat aligned to what I found funny at the time. Funnily enough I was an adult the whole time and generally laughed because of how far the stuff was. I think I was aligned with the intent of the videos, and fell into the same holes he did in making them, even being in a position of growing out of being a borderline neckbeard myself. Even I've tried to cope with it by saying "That's just how the Internet was back then," but my justifications, as well as iDubbbz' justifications to himself, were bullshit.
I always found iDubbbz incredibly annoying, and mean-spirited. But wow, good for him! It's takes a lot to self-reflect, admit you messed up, take responsibility for your past actions, and put in genuine effort to change for the better.
Watching the video now, and so far this is absolutely one of the best apology videos I've seen in a long time. The fact that he is even going to take down a lot of his old content is also really commendable. It doesn't undo the damage he has done with his videos, as he even fully admits, but its a solid start.
For those who had no context for the apology or the blowback like myself, I found this video very useful in laying everything out start to finish:

Wow I'm incredibly impressed with this apology. So many YouTube apologies are clearly insincere and just trying to avoid blowback but the way he owned up to his specific failings and specifically disavowed the racists in his audience AND took credit for creating that culture? I'm floored.
Thanks for making this post. There are quite a few videos that I wanted to share here but since there isn't a dedicated group on Tildes for video, I wasn't sure if sharing them directly in ~misc made sense.
Ooo, thank you for making me aware that Mission Across Wales had continued. I was worried he'd get too gun-shy to try it again.
I love shiey's content, I started watching at the beginning of the pandemic when I started working from home and was hooked immediately, so interesting but also kind of cosy in a strange way, it can feel very personal watching him doing everything from sleeping in his hammock, to eating, and even just wandering around towns and cities.
I actually rewatched the episodes recently where he goes into Chernobyl with his friend Poison (I think that's his alias) and the English kid. It made me sad when they were getting a McDonald's for lunch before grabbing food and supplies in a local supermarket to think that those areas around Chernobyl are potentially incredibly wartorn now.
The World War Two in real time YouTube channel has just arrived, after almost 5 years of weekly episodes spanning September 1939 till May 1944, at the 6th of June, 1944. - Throughout the day, they're releasing 24 hours of coverage on the events of D-Day.
Oh, wow. Hearing Indy Neidell's wonderful voice and seeing Spartacus Olsson's glorious mustache again brings back so many good memories watching The Great War, and TimeGhost. I somehow missed that they were working on this new channel (Edit: or maybe merely forgot about it since I appear to already be susbscribed, LOL). Thank you so much for sharing this!!!
David Blaine killed on Hot Ones.
The most recent one with Jason Sudeikis was really good too. Nothing so dramatic as Blaine's but still a really good interview with a seemingly really good guy.
Also,
Brandt CresslerBret KirsherBert Kreischer's recent appearance on Snacked was great too. God, I love Bert. So f'n funny. :PIt was awesome how Blaine managed to stay inhumanly composed throughout. It is also amazing that he essentially reversed the formula and put Sean in the corner. And he keeps saying "Awesome! That is delicious!", which is so snarky and defiant. Another great show by Mr. Blaine!
I will watch the others as well, I'm a fan of the show, thanks :)
Love Hot Ones so much. Even putting the gimmick of the show aside (which is entertaining), the interviews are always so well done with great questions instead of the normal BS you usually see in celeb interviews from the media.
I don't want to be hyperbolic, but this may be my favorite episode ever. The end just made it all the better.
I've been watching a few different series of videos on rotation. I work from home and I just get on with things outside of the odd meeting so I put YouTube on in the background to tune into.
First is Odyssey of the Dragonlords by Crashgem, it's a real play D&D campaign based on the 3rd party 5e adventure, Odyssey of the Dragonlords, which is an absolutely fantastic module and one I'm currently DM'ing for two groups so watching this campaign is giving me some really great ideas to expand and build on the adventure.
Defunctland, a really great documentary channel centered around theme park rides, specifically those that are now defunct. Some of their best ones are,
This is going to be a weird first video, but I think I found something interesting (that I'd never post on reddit because of how toxic things would get). This will only be relevant if 1) You've finished The Last of Us Part II, and 2) Are fascinated by the general reaction to a big moment, and want to see it play out perfectly for someone in realtime.
This video I found, this YouTuber is the biggest LoU fan. He loves these characters to death, just got done with the first game, is so enthusiastic, barrelling right into the second. And in this video, he goes through every single stage, every single moment, of exactly what the devs intended.
I love reaction videos when they're genuine (Red Wedding, etc). This one, he's so self aware, he's feeling exactly what Naughty Dog wanted (including the aftermath)... And he later quits the game. A story I've heard before, but to see it actually happen, I think it's a fascinating watch.
I always look forward to Izzzyzzz's videos because they give me peeks into online subcultures I wasn't a part of. The latest one — a round-up of Tumblr controversies — was a lot of fun.
While I get that we're getting a new influx of users and growth in post frequency, it may not be the best time to get rid of the idea of a video collection thread? (Especially when trying to onboard a large number of new people who aren't used to Tildes's focus on text-based, in-depth content.)
The reason for this thread still applies, and the current tag filtering system doesn't give people options to filter out the high-volume, less in-depth posts tagged with
videos
while not also filtering out discussion posts that happen to have started around a link to a video. The main focus of Tildes is intended to be primarily text-based in-depth content; while video essays can certainly qualify, when posted selectively, I don't think that all of the 12 videos you posted in the last couple of hours (more than a quarter of the new posts in that time period) would qualify.
Since the tag system doesn't currently allow for selective ignoring this type of video content, I'd argue that the video thread system (while admittedly somewhat new) is still a reasonable solution to the problem, and we shouldn't immediately discard that solution because activity increased slightly.
Thoughts on requiring a short summary with each video submission?
Adding a summary comment would help; Making the post a text post with some discussion and a link to the video would probably help even more. (Arguably the Vision Pro example that I linked would have been better as a text topic with a link to the video, but it's hard to predict that ahead of time.) Adding a summary/pitch/discussion topic wouldn't work for all video posts, but it would add value to most of them, and decrease the appearance of the posts being low-effort or low-value.
I think I'd still have a bit of a problem with the volume of posts, but that may just be a gut reaction to seeing walls of 6 video posts in a row on the "new" sort.

Here's a real short one of a guy trying to be the Pixar lamp
I watch a lot of YouTube. And lately I can't get this analysis of myhouse.wad out of my head. I don't want to spoil much, but it's a deep analysis of a doom mod made about someones house (simplifying it drastically here). If I had to describe it, it's like a mix of LEMMiNO and SummoningSalt content. It's definitely on the longer side, but well worth the watch in my opinion.
I found https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzdVSMRu16g to be incredibly thoughtful - a conference talk on coming of age on the internet.
