I watched the trailer again. It's the two leads. Their performances, their lines, their characters... just no. And, doing some research, it turns out this whole movie is based on a comedy those two performers did back in the day. That might be why the tone feels like frat-boy humour, rather than a clever subversion of civilised musicals. It's more like 'Porky's', less like 'Rocky Horror', more like 'American Pie', less like 'Naked Boys Singing' (which was honestly the first thing that came to mind when I saw the title "Dicks: The Musical").
And it was directed by the director of the 'Borat' movies, another comedy genre I couldn't get into.
There's a strand of modern humour that just isn't appealing to me. Which is fine. Not all humour is funny for all people.
Look... I'm sure I'll see it someday in the distant future when it turns up on a streaming service I'm already subscribed to, and I'm bored enough one Sunday afternoon to say "what the fuck, let's give it a go". But I'm not going to rush out and make seeing this a priority.
For as much as we have in common, and as many shared interests as we seem to have, we're also complete opposites in so many ways too. Larry Charles directing this movie is another reason I'm...

For as much as we have in common, and as many shared interests as we seem to have, we're also complete opposites in so many ways too. Larry Charles directing this movie is another reason I'm looking forward to it, since Borat almost made me puke in the theater from laughing so hard during the naked hotel fight scene, when I first saw it all those years ago. :P

Just when I thought I might like you! :P
Here's a couple of random follow-up thoughts, now that this has had time to percolate in my brain:
What if the titular dicks are not actually the male reproductive organs of the main characters? What if the titular dicks are the two main characters themselves... and the other characters combine to give them their comeuppance in the end? sigh No. This movie doesn't look that clever. But it might be.
And... totally off-topic: that poor person who posted in ~tildes earlier this week, asking how to filter profanity from their Tildes experience, will have an absolute conniption when they see this post! Even the fucking tags on this fucking topic about 'fucking identical twins' are fucking profane! :D
I really do think that's it. They're dicks who also can't stop bragging about their dicks (and careers), which is what's shown in the first 30s. Hence the dicks in Dicks: The Musical referring to...

I really do think that's it. They're dicks who also can't stop bragging about their dicks (and careers), which is what's shown in the first 30s. Hence the dicks in Dicks: The Musical referring to the protagonists, and also working on multiple levels since Nathan Lane is playing their dad who turns out to be gay, but who they attempt to get back together with their mom anyways. And I suspect they probably will get their comeuppance (or learn the error of their ways) by the end too, since this movie is basically a The Parent Trap parody, but with the twin girls instead being replaced by twin man-children who are totally self-centered douchebag assholes. :P
p.s. And lol, yeah... sorry to the person who wanted a profanity filter. ;)

I can understand not liking Borat, though. It's one of those movies that if you're in the right mindset it's the funniest thing ever, but if not it's just kind of gross. That might be this movie, too.
Honestly, Nathan Lane being in it is enough to get me to see it. I've never been disappointed by anything with Nathan Lane in it, except that they never have enough Nathan Lane. And pairing him with Megan Mullally is like a dream come true.
I'm not sure if that's sarcasm or sincerity. I've seen the show live on stage and I bought the movie version on DVD. It's wittier and funnier (for my taste) than the title would imply. (Almost)...

(Almost) Everything and everyone around the two main characters are basically my dream musical. Lane and Mullaly are both great performers and are brilliant as camp comedians. And the flashes of other performers we see are intriguing. I want to see this wonderful camp fabulosity!
However, the two main characters are... well... the main characters. And the actors playing them are the main writers, and the co-creators. The show reflects them, they are the show, and everything around them is just... I wonder how much camp fabulosity it would take to compensate for them if I saw this movie.
A little of both, really. I enjoyed it. Some of the songs pop into my head every once in a while. Unfortunately you are probably the only person I have ever seen acknowledge its existence.

I'm honestly surprised A24 is putting their stamp on this. Did the musical this is based on do well? Maybe there's something here I'm just not getting, but I feel like I'd be down for a movie with a lot of the elements spinning around here, but this totally misses the mark. Or it's an absolutely terrible trailer.

I feel that The Greatest Showman is underwhelming both as a musical and a film, and a strikingly unethical piece of historical revisionism. The thing you should know about the songs in The Greatest Showman is that only one of them mentions characters by name -- that being the fairly dynamic and enjoyable "The Other Side." Obviously that's a really surface-level criticism, but I bring it up to communicate the idea that The Greatest Showman is less a musical and more a movie with a pop album attached. A lot of people find songs like "A Million Dreams" or "This is Me" or "From Now On" really entertaining or inspiring, and I don't know, pop isn't my genre but I can definitely see the appeal. It's just, they feel so disconnected from the larger plot of the movie, which is, broadly, about how PT Barnum was a really good guy who wasn't racist or ableist or any of that bad stuff -- he was just a whimsical guy! who loved his family! and proved the critics wrong! I find this framing disingenuous. Barnum was a complicated man, and many of his "freaks" had very good things to say about him and how he helped them advance in their careers, but at the same time, he exploited them relentlessly and owned at least one of them as a slave. The saccharine, positive tone of the film, then, rings a little hollow.
The Greatest Showman is written by the same guys who did Dear Evan Hansen, -- Pasek and Paul -- and if you're familiar with both works, it can be interesting to compare the two. Both, to an extent, carried by a charismatic cast (though DEH's film adaptation doesn't fare nearly as well); both stuffed with anthemic, emotionally resonant songs that feel and sound very different (i.e. more upsetting) in context. Both, in my opinion, shoot for an inspiring, straightforward message; both, in my opinion, largely miss the mark. At least The Greatest Showman is a much lighter experience, if you can forget about the real Barnum and treat this film's version as a fictional character.

Yeah, I remember that being said about this movie at the time. Supposedly, it was innovative, in that it was combining pop music with a musical. But, it did seem more like a commercial decision to maximise profit by making sure the associated soundtrack album had as wide appeal as possible, with fewer book numbers and more breakaway pop hits (thanks to Anya in 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' for teaching me that!). And, sure enough, many of the songs from that musical were released as stand-alone singles.
meh It's an okay way to pass a couple of hours. I love musicals, I saw 'The Greatest Showman', and I can barely remember it a couple of years later. Only one song stands out for me, because a...

Only one song stands out for me, because a Broadway singer and a gay dancer used it as a fundraiser for an LGBTQ centre, thus turning it into a sort of queer anthem by implication.
The rest of the movie is blank to me. Like I said, I love musicals, but 'The Greatest Showman' didn't make an impression on me - either good nor bad.

Yeah, I watched it too, but can barely remember anything about it now either, nor can I even remember any of the music numbers in it other than A Million Dreams... which is a rarity for me since I normally play the soundtrack on repeat for weeks after I watch new musicals. The only thing I really remember clearly from it is Hugh Jackman making me swoon a few times (which he doesn't have to do much to accomplish). ;)
Meh. Deep in the comment threads, especially between two people having a casual, friendly conversation, I don't see the harm. I have been known to do similar on occasion too.

The same video on Youtube for people without Nebula subscriptions.
I think this has convinced me to get really high and watch it. Next week it is. Will report back.
Ha! I don't usually recommend doing that, but honestly, that's not a terrible idea for this one.

It would be hard to create a movie trailer that I would be less entertained by. This looks awful to me, I don't understand the appeal at all.
