So. Most video games that are any good depend upon the input of the player as an inherent aspect of the story, and Dredge is among them. Especially with the self-directed nature of it and the ludonarrative harmony between your willingness to test the boundaries of your hallucinations and various narrative elements I won't spoil, I really don't see how this will actually be good. Just based on plot, Dredge is very very thin. The joy of it is in the player choice, and so the fruitful ground for a movie is just "spoopy fish".

Honestly, of the two of them, Dave the Diver would be a much better choice to get a movie or TV show. There's no real player choice there, and it's already nigh-cinematic.

I don't know, cosmic horror in a fishing boat has the legs to be both good and bad. I don't think there's much more than that they can lift from the original game. Feeling of isolation and this otherworldly almost steampunk aesthetic can probably be factors too.

So to me the setting sounds interesting but I'm afraid this'll end up being just b-tier shlock, close to something like last year's Five Nights at Freddy's.

Eh. Taking dredge's themes/plot and just uplifting that into a movie (person becomes a fisher in a small island chain, lovecraft happens) is fine. That's about the right thickness for a plot anyways. Now it could be very good, but I also don't expect adaptations to really try that hard.

I would imagine that they take the game as a skeleton, bring in the stuff the notes hint at, include shine of the backstory, and they might be able to put something good together.

A proper example just came out: Fallout, which are also games that rely on the player's choices. And by all accounts, it seems to be a great show.

Besides this, everyone keeps forgetting about Arcane, which is also based on a game. League of Legends, while not narratively strong, is also exclusively based on player control & interaction. And yet Arcane is a masterpiece.

I think that what's missing isn't proper titles to adapt, but good, passionate filmmakers who can adapt such material, and translate it into non-interactive media.

But yeah, proper skilled writing and filmmakers who understand the visual language of a game is often what's missing in an adaptation.

I just realized Netflix has a show in the works. 50/50 chance they do well or not.

Well, don't know how good a movie will be but I'll say this drummed up one more sale for the game cause I didn't know this game existed til now. I love fishing games and htis looks like it has a creepy atmosphere which I kinda like without being too scary for me to play (I can't play most horror games, too scary for me. I can watch some one else play them though and I love watching some one else play and finding out the mystery but I can't do it myself).

I bought it and I think I'm like more than half done and honestly, I wish it was a little more punishing at night. I love the creepy story but I actually find it a pretty chill game overall. And then cause I was loving it I started looking up about stuff (if I really love a game I'll start reading about it when I can't play it) and that introduced me to Dave the Diver.

Heh, on the other hand a while back I bought subnautica and while I loved the idea, it was a little too much for me (to be fair I think I ended up drifting off cause I couldn't figure out how to get to the next goal and I was being stubbern about refusing to look it up and eventually I got bored before I figured it out). Subnautica I think is about the level of creepyness I can handle before getting too creepy.

I can't handle subnautica because I am too afraid of the underwater in games. Even the underwater stage in Super Mario 64 creeped me. I can't play these kind of stages. I simply freeze.

I remember I had to dive in one Tomb Raider game and I stayed above water for like 20 minutes shooting a shark with the gun until I managed to kill it. Only then I dived and was still terrified.

I agree that Dredge doesn't feel like it has much of a threat, even at night. After I started staying out a little longer and going deep into the night time, I started to lose interest in the game, as I realized this was all there was and night time didn't really have to be putting any pressure on me. The loop, without any ticking clock or anything, is ultimately just not that interesting and, at best, a series of minigames.

I like unveiling the mystery and I am a sucker for fishing games so I like trying to see if I can catch all the fish, but I do find I get bored quickly once I resolve whatever issue each area has, even if I want to catch all the fish. Overall I'm not upset I bought the game. But I think it could do better if nightime was a true threat and you really had to try to build up to be able to do nighttime fishing. As is with the engines I have I can usually outrun any threats and the insane meter just makes things interesting when I get really insane.

I guess if I were going to do changes I'd make fishing feel more like a real fishing game and not just an easy mini game and I'd make nighttime at least a little more threatening (maybe make it so that you have to be near end game before you can really outrun the threats but give other ways you can try to at least catch some fish before you have to leave like maybe more reliance on having to stealth and be aware of having to sneak away before you are seen).

Talking about deep sea, I'd love an adaptation of Peter Watt's Starfish.
