They'll remove the real Christmas tree and put on a fake
Ms. Hidalgo said that the rings now installed on the monument — 95 feet wide and 43 feet tall — were too heavy to resist winter winds and remain permanently, and would be replaced “as soon as possible” by lighter rings made by ArcelorMittal, the global steel giant that made the current set.

Personal preference of, and I guess a lot of these things seem tacky at first, much like the tower itself. But I reckon they diminish something iconic.

36 years after hosting the Olympics, Calgary is in the process of dismantling both the iconic Ski Jump ramp and the ceremonial Olympic Plaza downtown. All of the donated bricks, which are etched with the names of the donors, are being sent to the landfill.
Olympic legacy is stupid. Putting things up specifically for Olympics is a well known fools errand, and I look forward to Tourists for the next 30 years of everyone complaining about having the Rings on an otherwise timeless icon.
Or I'm wrong, and LA should put the rings on the Hollywood Sign.
This is very unusual and surprising to me. Isn't it illegal to even take pictures of the Eiffel Tower at night? It seems permanently adding anything to such an iconic landmark would be frowned upon.

I looked up the night photos thing, and no it isn't true. Well, not entirely. The lights on the Eiffel Tower are considered an art, and therefore under copyright. Technically that copyright law is...

The lights on the Eiffel Tower are considered an art, and therefore under copyright. Technically that copyright law is still in effect until the artist's death + 70 years. You can take night photos, but you can't monetize them, or use them commercially.
I don't know, that's like leaving the Christmas tree up

Normally I’d agree, but since the Eiffel tower itself is also a Christmas tree in this analogy I kind of like it!

I want to live in the universe where the French are constantly building giant monuments and sending them to other countries unsolicited.
I mean, that's one way to get a culture victory...
A man of culture as well I see. France has a culture bonus you know...
They did gift us the Statue of Liberty and replicas of the Liberty Bell. .
I wonder what else they have sent to people !
If my strata didn't explicitly ban it (and some unknown strata holder assiduously enforce it), I'd never take down my Christmas lights.
What's a strata?

Oddly specific, ut very apt subscription 😆

Ah good to know. This still feels odd to me, like putting cowboy hats on Mt. Rushmore.
